Thanks everyone for the spirited discussion. We’ve decided to stick with ST this year. We may or may not have an AE tournament in addition, but we will not be replacing ST with AE.

When I played that, only playable characters were Jax and Mileena

Jax was broken and Mileena was just to counter Jax by modify sai attack in air, Scorpion could do it too but not as well

Masaka I have real respect for you as an ST player, poster and still gratefull for making the first ST footage I ever got (the 2001 MWC) but I dont totaly agree with your point of view here.

The “Change is good!” argument is a total red herring. It does nothing to address the questions: "What does AE offer as a tournament game that ST doesn’t, and do those things warrant replacing it?"
Is AE somehow a better game? How? Because it has more characters? Please. ST with Akuma has more characters than ST! Yet most US players accept that ST is a better game without him. Tossing in every incarnation of every SF2 character makes for an entertaining evening when you want to see how well HF Blanka fares against CE Bison or ST Sim. However, it’s not a scenario for the biggest tournament stage in the US.

Obviously ST with more competetive characters in is going to be better. Akuma like other unbalanced characters should be banned. For reasons I and Apoc have stated earlier, I think WW come under this heading also possibly CE Bison.
Some of the old characters will certainly be top teir. Specificaly some characters will do well against the US top teir tyrants, like Hyperfighting Balrog against ST.O.Sagat, making for more varied matchups. O.Sagat having more tough matches is especialy good for people who play characters that have a tough time with him, like your awsome Cammy for instance.
If you wanted to be totaly safe, ban WW and CE.

How is including AE alienating ST players? AE is ST with more characters. Remember also many top ST players still consider Hyperfighting the best SF2, Apoc and Jumpsuit for instance.

Thing is, AE may be untested but all of its component games have been more comprehensively broken down than any game maybe baring MvC2. We all know WW, CE, HF, SSF & ST inside out. We know WW is broken and why, CE Bison redizzy etc… What really needs to be tested here?

Many top Japanese now attend Evo and they have had the CPS2 version for a while now, their input is important to this discussion. Who is the main contact between Evo and Japanese?

I have to agree with masaka. You will be reducing player count by changing it, its still untested and needs time for community approval before coming to evo. And the “WHAT BETTER PLACE TO SHOW HOW GOOD IT IS THAN EVO” argument devalues the prestige of this event.

What if MvC3 arcade came out the same day as AE, it would most certainly be in evo. But would we drop MvC2 so soon? i don’t think we would. I’d want to say we’d have both, but i don’t know if that would happen either, looking back, there was an MvC1 invitational at the MvC2 tourney, and I don’t remember what happened with CvS1 -> CvS2, and A2 and A3 still run together sometimes.

I think the idea is that you don’t want to drop ST without the certainty that the players will pick up AE. But it makes no sense to drop AE considering it IS the most upgraded SF of that series (the OG series?) just like you wouldn’t drop a CvS3 or MvC3.

The answer seems to be to work both in, but having a regular tournament for both seems redundant. I’m guessing here, but the ST players don’t really seem to be coming to play a bunch of new people, as much as they are coming to play other ST players (Apoc?). Anyone new would be excited about AE as much or moreso than ST itself. It seems the solution is to limit the ST event (higher entry / invitational/ etc…) and make AE the standard tournament. At least until i read more :).
