I wasn’t exactly blaming Evo for anything, just stating the impact it has on the Seattle scene. In fact I was planning on coming next year because of all the good things I had heard about this year’s tourney (gj SRK Staff btw). But I most definitely understand where you’re coming from FMJaguar.
If it turns out that the port of HF on Capcom Classics/Collection is arcade perfect then we just found our solution. Just run HF and drop ST.
On a side note, it’s about time someone ELSE started re-championing for HF
what are you complaining about, you’ll find a way to play with your SNES controller
Not complaining…just advocating HF since ST is a very “loose” interpretation of SF2 IMO
Oh yea, as far as the Snes pad, true dat
for the loooooongest time i thought apoc was black, til i saw bang the machine, lol what a stunnah !!
do you ever post anything except the same hf is better, supers are crap, snes pad for life stuff? i think everyone knows your views already. you could just post/type “my usual guff” in every thread outside of the ae good game thread and people would understand.
LOL Mullah, but you have to give Team Pad Pro credit, they are definately champions for true SF. I have always said that HF IS THE BEST VERSION of SF period. Yet we sit here and debate over ST. I like ST but I LOVE HF.
To get back on topic…
This thread started out as a “Which version of ST is the most accurate?” and ended up going to why was A3 dropped from EVO. Me thinks that there are underlying issues here and the ST issue was just the cork that released all the other sentiments about EVO representing real SF.
How does it get fixed? Not sure but here’s a well thought out suggestion…

CigarBob’s cab was very useful agreed? Well, why not make much more compact standup units that actually can be dissassembled and travel well? Just like they do with trade show booths? Think about it.
-
Now you have 2 options. You can sell them at the event OR they can be part of the prize if enough people enter. If people do not buy them then just keep them till next EVO. They’re kits so they will travel well and won’t take up much space and they’re stackable!
-
What’s that? They would be too light? We can’t play SF on controls that move! Agreed. That’s why these units will not move. They will be HEAVY. Please explain? Sure. The units will have a cavity that can hold a specific amount of bricks or cinder blocks. You buy them at the nearest home improvement store to the event. At the end of the event you dispose of the weight and take your light weight kit on the road.
This can be done if a team is assembled and enough resources allocated. All it takes is one person to raise their hand to get the ball rolling.

I’m actually very flattered to know that Evo inspires people to play games again, and a bit disturbed as well. I agree with FMJ’s assessment that the fact that Evo is needed to keep MvC2 alive in regions is a sign of a bigger problem. Evo should be the RESULT of rabid play, not the source of it. Does this mean if there was no Evo, there would be far less fighting game play in the country all together? I mean, without SBO, obviously play in Japan would still be rampant as ever… I guess I was just hoping that it was like that here as well, but it’s just not true. So I do have to admit I stand corrected: Evo does help determine what people play. I don’t think it’s the ONLY determining factor, as 3rd Strike’s resuscitation still proves to me, but I can see how it does provide the right motivation and inspiration, particularly for those who live in areas where top level play is present, such as the Seattle MvC2 players.
(As an aside: I do hope that the Seattle MvC2 crew IS inspired to come to Evo next year and to practice up their game on DC thanks to this year’s amazing results. The quality of the MvC2 tournament has really only BENEFITTED from reduced popularity. Not being the “main event” and being stripped down to its hardcore fanbase really made the game much stronger and more enjoyable to watch, IMO, even IF we ignore the “Return of the King” surprise results. I cannot tell you how often I heard cries of shock and applause and admiration from the MvC2 semi’s section. MvC2 isn’t dead, I think it’s just enjoying its quiet life outside of the limelight now. The only thing missing from the MvC2 tournament this year was the presence of NW’s greatest… ^_^)
Let’s just all hope that one day Capcom releases an arcade port of Alpha 3 on one of those “nostalgia packs” that companies are so keen on these days. If something like that ever is released and, like FMJ says, Evo gets big enough and streamlined enough, maybe every year we can start including 2 or 3 small tourneys for random games. Would be cool to see things like a small Alpha 3 tourney, a small Hyper Fighting tourney, even more obscure things like a Puzzle Fighter tournament, and yes, ShinjiGohan, maybe even an EX3 tournament (I actually enjoy watching those little exhibition videos you put out). But right now, we’re not big enough yet. And Capcom may never release an arcade accurate Alpha 3 ever again, which will really hurt Alpha 3’s chances. Even with Emulation, because you thought button config was hard on Console games, button config will be a NIGHTMARE on Emus.

Well actually if must you know, I believe SSF2 is better (just in case you were wondering, but I doubt it). I only suggested HF on Capcom Classics/Collection IF is it arcade perfect. This has nothing to do with HF being better than ST. Everyone has always said that they want a perfect port of SF2 on console, right? Well, if this is a perfect port, why not just choose HF already. If there was a perfect port for CE on the console as well, I would suggest that too. Yes, I’m not ST’s biggest proponent, but I do pose an interesting question: If HF is arcade perfect on console, why not just choose that and end this quest? If the scene still decides to go with ST, I agree with Dream.
And Mullah for the record, I will ocassionally post about Captain N: The Gamemaster and other 80’s toons, so I just disproved your theory
Thanks for the support, though no need to tease. If 5 years after its debute and it still isn’t in Evo, it likely won’t get a start now of all time.
There is nothing OG about SFA3.

How close is Sega Saturn’s JP SFZ3? I heard it’s the “best” home translation of SFZ3, but it’s still not close to being 100% perfect…
Whoa there buddy…Super sf2 the best? go wash your mouth out with soap! street fighter 2 turbo all the way!, if the sf ain’t got turbo in the name then leave it alone (apart from AE cause thats a nice party piece). oh and have a nice day
z3 on saturn would be a solid port if the game didnt suffer from amazingly bad slowdown on vc’s. but dhalsim is still nerfed badly in that version…
You take that back :annoy:
But seriously, A3 was one of the last of the “good” SF games. A lot of the tourney games that came after it, CVS1, CVS2, CFE…are crap. I’d say now that CVS2 is not the cutting edge game it once was (and besides being a shitty game) they could cut back on its promotion…too bad everyone plays it, simply because everybody else plays it. If there was an acceptable community of A3 players, I’d suspect that CVS2 would get dropped by a lot of people, but maybe i’m being a bit wishful
Hey, what up Mandizzle! I may be up there soon, actually. Tryin’ to move back, heheh. Then maybe someone can teach me how to play Marvel=)
Apoc.
Seems like every OG played it:P It’s right up there after HF and ST:D
Apoc.
Heh, I never noticed slowdown on A3 Saturn…but then again that’s cause I never used V-Ism.
Me = A3 scrub. A2 me likes.
i’m not even going to read the rest of this thread… just plunging after reading this first post.
ST PS1/2 hell no!!
gould made a thread on the three button moves ( and other possible probs with ps1) about a a week before the tournament here in the evo2k5 group. i had not played the ps1 version until the monday b4 the tourney and i just stared @ said “WTF is this” that monday night. almost noone replied and it seemed too late to do anything about it so…
y know i’ll always play arcade over anything esp cigarbobs cabinet. if we could get more cabs like that…sigh.
in case its not clear, i’m completely with u on this - like everyone else i’m sure - time to pick an official version that’s not arcade to get da youngbloods into st.

While I agree with Apoc on having games that was originally designed for arcade to keep it in its arcade format, I realize the impossible task it would be for SRK to maintain the arcade format for just a once a year event.
There are two options one of which I would really like to see happen, but it would really depend on the commitment for SRK and its staff. Majors like ECC, MWC, Texas Showdown, SEC, NCR etc all be under the wing of SRK and travel across the country setting up venuse and regional tournament so that if Arcade cabients were to be used it will be maintain and actually be profitable for SRK to set up and hopefully drawing a bigger overall crown for Evolution (ie CPL with the computer gaming scene)
I do realize the daunting task this would be but if the scene is to continue to grow then this might be an outlook to look at now rather than later.
Since I pretty much know the above suggestion is pretty unrealistic now, I have given up the fight to have games be on Cabinets or expect players like CigarBob to produce quality cabinets so that the OG player may enjoy the yester years of SF.
Evoloution isn’t going to revert itself back and we must look forward to improve the scene and avoid such problems for next years Evo.
A simple solution to all this problem is to announce the games before year’s end or as soon as possible. Include also the system to which the game will be used and rules that will be enforced on it.
I know Evo usually give about 2 to 3 month advance notice but I think thats too short of a notice. And as a result problems like the ST for PS1 arrises.
For example say the New Season for SRK and the road to Evolution start January 1st 2006… then on that day… Announce something like…
-=Games Tentative for Evolution 2006=-
CvS2
System: PS2
Rounds: 1
Games: 2/3 Games
Format: Double Elimination
Rule: Whatever the general rules are for CvS2
Hyper Annerversary Edition
System: PS2
Rounds: 2/3 Rounds
Games: 2/3 Games
Format: Double Elimination
Rules: Whatever necesarry to have it playable and competitive, No Akuma on ST
Soul Calibur 3
System: PS2
Rounds: 3/5 Rounds
Games: 2/3 Games
Format: Double Elimination
Rules: No Customized Characters… etc etc etc…
GGXX#R
System: PS2
Rounds: 2/3 Rounds
Games: 2/3 Games
Format: Double Elimination
Rules: No Gold or Black Character, No Kliff or Justice
*NOTES: Sequal to GGXX#r is GGXX-Slash and will be substituded upon its import release date and is subject change.
In these three examples…
CvS2 - Even though it is an expected game players arent going to wonder if the game is a dead game and that player can continute to practice for Evolution 06
HSFA- This may be the most controversial, but if noticed is given such a long period of time in advance, OG player will have to accept this game as the Old school game represented at evo and that tourney organizers will use this game rather than hybrid arcade games such as the DC or Sega Saturn or PS1 version of the game. Notice that is given 6-8 month ahead of schedule will also give lite to any inconsistancies that player might find so rule may be changed so that by Evo there isnt going to be a shock to what game or version is going to be played. HSFA is the game that is most accessable to Old school player and New School players, yes everyone knows there is going to be inconsistancies in those game from it orginial format but with so much time in advance even Old School players can’t give excuses… just go back and play those games learn it like a new game… for the new school player it gives them a starting point and won’t feel so far behind of the Old School players. Finally winners of HSFA at Evo wont be confused with some “so called” ST hybrid game. Which gives respect to those OG player who play ST and a side ST tourney may be allowed if players like CigarBob is willing to bring his cabinet next year again.
GGXX#R - was chosen because there is a game on the horizon called GGXX-Slash which will ultimately replace the game but no word has been annouced whether the game will be on console or not… at least not to my knowledge. This is a good example for SRK to use to announce that there will be a Guilty Gear tourney at Evo next year and that the “newest” game will be used so gamers will know ahead of time that when Slash does come out it is their best interest if they want to participate in Guilty Gear at Evo 06 to buy the import version of the game…
SC3 - I chose this game for the obvious reason that the game has not been released but has been announced already… the Soul Calibur community has knowledge about what the game is consisted but no definate rules have been set for the game. SRK can announce this game and the rule for the game will follow as more knowledge about the game comes about. This prepares gamers to play this game without fear that even though SC3 will be out “will it be at evo” question is out.
Anyways this has become long but I think if the staff of SRK do announce tentative game WAY WAY in advance (ie CPL with painkiller and counterstrike…) players wont have the excuse of what game is gonna be played on what system or if this game or that game will be at Evo… local tourney organizers can play the games that will be at Evo and if they wanna host tourney thats not at evo players will know in advance that learning a game that will not be at evo will just be for pleasure or that it may be at ECC or MWC or at some other regional but will definately not be at EVO.
