I feel that playing this style will help seattle players tighten up their playing.
Playing with only 1 round, or starting a match with a major life disadvantage makes me play very SAFE, and SMART. PLAY LIKE YOU ONLY HAVE 1 HIT LEFT!!
I feel this will help players develop mental stamina for those situations where players feel hopeless. NEVER GIVE UP!!! NEVER GIVE UP!!! NEVER GIVE UP!!!
Please leave the rules open for modification. I think the rules will be easy to pick up, but there is always room for improvement/simplification.
I am down with this idea and hopefully will be able to hit the dojo up every other thursday. I have a few things at work to figure out, but should hopefully be out next week.
I like the idea of this and hope to improve my game. With the ideas posted in duggs thread over the last week, I am thinking about the game differenlty. I can already see a big difference in how I play compared to a week ago.
like its been stated. this is to work on your footsies, zoning, and patience. if someone has full life and you have half life or a quarter life ARE YOU GONNA PLAY MAAAAAAAAD WRECKLESS like you would if you were both at full? i would hope not. time to step your come back game’s up.
cvs2 was so tight in that aspect because if you were on point your ratio 1 could ocv a whole team. draggin ur nuts alllllllllllllllllllllllllll over the other guys face so to say…
Seems interesting, I’m a little bit bummed to see Singles moving to Sundays since it means I can’t make it but I guess there’s always casuals.
Will we be doing a slightly smaller buy-in for the first week so people can feel it out or is the 5$ hard set?
edit: I honestly think this is a bit too complicated to be honest, I don’t see it holding up for very long. Seems like it will slow things down and just be really confusing. Maybe simplify it and remove the life percentage thing? 3 characters, 1 round, whatever. I dunno, I’ll try it atleast once I guess.
The life percentage thing is basically the most important part. You focus on taking as much as possible from them, even if your character is going to die, and you also conserve as much as possible, taking less risks.
I think some of you are looking way too hard into this. Think of this is some kind of practice drill on a specific aspect of the game. You are forcing yourself into a situation where you have only a specific set of options. This is what you do in real sports and guess what? It works.
I understand what you guys are saying about preparing purely for Evo and all, but take this with you so you can chew on it;
First I need to make another thread that details the Ranking System for the NW. Finally. Second I need to explain to yall the schedule we have planned that will give a balance of gatherings, casuals, MMs, and tournaments, every week. And third, I am not too concerned if you guys think this will be fun or not. It’s meant to be a serious training tool that yes, will be a pain in the ass to run and having judges for will not be easy, but the benefit to everybody’s game WILL be seen.
I think that it is very important to train hard but to not only train hard, but you have to train with the right mind set that will give you the most benefit for your game. Part of training yourself to have a stronger mind set, is to constantly challenge your brain. CVS style SF4 has been offered to you guys for exactly that reason. Keep in mind that CVS style of play or anything other than Evo style matches is not being offered to replace Evo training. What SSF4 vs. SNK play is meant to offer is an expansion to your way of thinking about the game. Call it a break from Evo training, if you will. Take time away from the 2/3 round 2/3 match setting for one night out of the week to do something different yet still be very productive to your ability to compete. Again, the schedule post has yet to be made so I realize now that you guys don’t see what is planned like I do. But trust me when I say that all of the NW organizers are keeping everybody’s best interest at heart here when it comes to having a powerful scene in the SF community. And we all need to work together.
Use Grill Nights as a way of breaking your bad habits and putting yourself in new situations for your own practice. But don’t freak out just yet, cause Thursday nights will of course still have casual set ups to play on too. But everybody just think about the stream for a second and imagine when people see us doing shit in NW SSF4 that nobody else is doing! Fucking SSF4 vs. SNK! That shit will catch hella people’s attention!
Also, it is not written in stone that we do SSF4 vs. SNK every Thursday night instead of singles or anything else different. Grill Nights is more about getting together before the weekend with Tournament Wars and soon to be Weekly Singles Tournaments on Sunday. And having some practice time to prepare for shit, but mixing it up so that you are forced to expand your abilities in new ways. This way you can gain more experience and a shorter amount of time, preparing yourself for Evo better, and developing that right kind of mind set that will keep you on your edge.
Bottom line is, just don’t knock it till you’ve tried it.
I definitely want to try this out, hearing the talk about footsies is something I definitely need my footsie game (or lack there of) needs some definite help, and I would be open to any and all criticisms.
Hello everyone, I need to put my 2 cents into this. First off, Let me explain what Grill Nights truly represents and what it is about.
Thursday Night Grill nights was designed to keep things fresh and new once a week for our Fighting game community. Since it has begun, I try to keep the food different and as well keep the tournaments alternating in order to help players develop their skills. We have run singles, round robins, teams etc at the Grill night. Grill Nights will always try to expeirment with different Tournament formats, they are designed to help people train and help people focus on certain part of their game that is a little weak.
Currently we are going to test out the new CVS2 style format to see how it effects our players. Think of it like the time Tournament Wars had the “random character” tourney or when the Dojo had the “new Chars only” tourney. They are just different tournament formats. So rest assured that the new CVS2 format is not going to be the ONLY thing going on at the dojo on thursday, we will try it out this week and depending on how people like it, we will bring it back in another 2 weeks.
About the CVS2 Format. I know it sounds complex, it is hard to explain on a thread. Trust me though, it is very easy and pretty fun and it almost subconsciously makes people play completely different. Its just the beauty of CVS2 (for those who never played, it is a very footsie intense game).
So folks, try it out, you are not forced to play. There will be casuals set up, so others can do challenges or mm. The Sunday singles tourney day, I would suggest needs to happen in the afternoon and not at night. Are people comfortable with this?

Also, should we allow winner to be able to change ultras between rounds? I’d say yes, since in CvS2 you had multiple supers and Evo is thinking about changing the rule.
Hello all fellow Street fighter gamers! This is my first time posting here so be gentle with me, I’d like come by tomorrow and check out the scene and probably even participate. Now you guys do let noobs in on the action right? I just want to improve on my game and hopefully pick up a few tips by watching a few matches in person.
Now let me see if I understand this, I have to call first right? is there some sort of procedure I gotta go through to even play? This’ll be my first time doing anything like this outside my circle. I do have my own joysticsk, one legit and one modded. Hit me back up!
Yo, you’re fine to just roll through although it’s pretty awesome how polite* you are about attending. The Seattle scene has been working pretty hard to be more welcoming to new comers because it is important to have a growing scene and alot of people have realized this who were not as accepting of new players a while back. So yeah, just show up, play and have fun. Also, welcome to the seattle sf scene
if you take it as being fun then that’s what you’ll get out of it.
It’s (hopefully) forcing players to really focus on trying to score max damage on mistakes, finding ways to chip at your opponents heatlh, playing w/o an ultra in some cases. Example:
If I’m Bison at 100% I play him a little more aggressive than if he’s at 25%, at 25% I’m focusing on trying to counter poke bait out moves to score a big punish or to put me at advantage via an untechable knockdown. It should help those really try to implement more footsies into their game which is what a lot of players here feel they have but have a lot to work on (including vets like myself).
In short, don’t knock it till you try it, I’ve ran it with a few people so far and they really like the format and see it as a great way to try and improve their game.
