tighten up your “blockstrings” if they are getting backdashed out of. A trick I’ve been using against Rose’s backdash is to throw out a normal that will beat both ex spiral and backdash. Don’t know how that works for most characters, but it pretty much keeps her on lockdown.
also you could use more lows. its hard to back dash if you are blocking low
Dudley’s lows are terrible and f.hp works quite well against Rose’s backdash+EX soul spiral if done late.
I’ve no problems with the matchups so I’m not asking for tips there. I generally beat Roses and Chun Li’s but it’s just aggravating to me that certain things come so easily to some characters whereas for others they have to work for every inch they get.
dudley needs better normals
Rose sort of needs that backdash though. She doesn’t have much else to work with. Chun needs it to a lesser extent, but I feel that design wise they were built around having good backdashes.
Also the some things come so easily thing you mentioned is part of what makes SF so interesting. Working around your characters limitations, exploiting your opponent’s, and playing to your characters strengths.
I think the problem only arises when a character has too many of those things come so easily.
That’s exactly what I’m talking about. A zoning character tends to be built on 2 of 3 things, mobility, range and escape. Dhalsim for example has good range (stretch) and mobility (teleports, jump back), but awful escape. Both Rose and Chun Li have good mobility and good range (both their’ normals are very good in footsies and both have fireballs), but they ALSO have good escapes with those backdashes. I can’t count the number of times a situation has been completely reset because Chun/Rose just backdashed twice and, with their ridiculous range, were on the other side of the screen again in no time.
It doesn’t make sense to me that you have to work against their mobility, work against their range and then ALSO have to work to keep them in YOUR range once you’ve earned your position ‘inside’. That work should be on THEIR end. It should be difficult for them to escape you, a punishment for getting around their zoning. They’re the ones who have to think about how to get out, not me having to think about how to keep them close.
A lot of people say they’re free on wakeup, but I disagree. They’re not Ryu DP FADC backdash levels of good, but they’ve definitely got it better than a good half of the cast.
Yeah, could you imagine a character that had high damage/stun combos, fast dash/walk speed, really good Ultras, an awesome super, divekicks, safe full-screen specials, command grabs, dps, AND relatively easy execution? That’d be CRAZY, yo!
If you’re talking about Seth, I actually do think he’s really badly designed actually. He’s not a Street Fighter character at all.
he was obviously talking about yun/yang
rose is free on wake up without U2. chun is free without meter
i think those matches vs dudley are built around him getting in one good time, and landing one mixup. even if they didnt have good backdashes, they would still give dudley problems. they are counter designs to dudleys character type.
Actually I was talking about Yun lol, but at least Seth has the worst health and stun in the game by a hilariously large margin. Plus, I’ve always been fond of the “Ultimate Fighter” archetype, combining various moves from other fighters to be the “ultimate life form” or whatever. Not as cool as Bison or even Gill, but Seth is cool with me. Plus, he has that funny ass pedo laugh.
Yun does not have that much damage per combo, rather he can get in easily and do many in a row. As for stun, negligible.
Ultra’s are also mediocre, DP kicks are not good as standard shoryuken’s, third frailest character in the game, and the dash is af he wades through the thickest freaking fog.
Yun is good, but he is not a magical ‘do everything’ character.
Yang, much less so.
Oh, I’m still in the SSF4 frame of mind. Yeah, Yun/Yang don’t seem all that bad to me. Dudley’s got this.
Option selects and safe jumps control their wakeup which is why it’s considered bad (even though Cody’s is a LOT worse). The whole discussion about you keeping them close is all a part of playing Dudley (close range fighter) is it not? And I’m sure if they’re allowed to backdash every time you get in then your blockstrings, frame traps aren’t very good and you either never have them in the corner or let them out of the corner very easily.
Tbh, their backdashes aren’t the problem, it’s the focus backdash O.O! That’s like free escape lol but obviously there’re ways to deal with that too. Seriously though, there backdashes aren’t that big of a deal. Especially since they travel so far and they’re just pushing themselves into the corner for some frame trap rape. If you watch high level Rose and Chun play they never just spam backdash because it’s not that good an option, especially if you need to hold a position in a matchup.
Also, I’m pretty sure every character has a way to deal with backdashes via OS and stuff.
what do you mean? like focus a jump in and backdash away? on wake up?
Focus backdash a jump in and during blockstrings. It can be a pain when your not anticipating.
I still stand by the sentiment that Viper is fucking retarded. She scores one knockdown and you’re completely fucked without a good reversal, and even then she can bait shit, do a billion more damage, and put you right back where you started. Fucking fuck.
It’s not all that easy for her to get that knockdown though, unless you’re Hakan or something. I agree she needs a damage nerf, like, 15%, but she’d have to get something to balance that reduction.
I’d appreciate it if Viper couldn’t juggle into U1. The SJCs are fine, but the juggles do way too much damage IMO. I suppose I’m biased because I play Seth.
Uhh I dunno about that particular suggestion. What would she use U1 for? Wakeup reversal?
Punishes. It’s not like she needs the damage.
