fei long fun facts
in vanilla, everyone did a lot more damage, and/or had a lot more life, so fei lost to more charracters. ryu, ken, honda, blanka, sagat, and akuma were all much worse matchups in vanilla, not to mention he still lost to all the charge characters that he loses to in super console. most of those characters had damage reductions, and other various nerfs, and it drew those matches closer to 5/5’s.
fei got a couple buffs on the way into super. his f+hk was sped up, and hk cw was un-nerfed into a semi abuseable move. he also recieved no damage nerfs. nothing drastic, but when everyone else dropped down, all of a sudden he didnt have very many bad matches. by no means was he a top tier character in vanilla. it really felt as tho every match was up hill. if i recall he only beat 4 characters, lost a bunch, and had 5-5’s against one or two
in AE, everyone mostly got more nerfs. almost every charge character he lost to was nerfed in some way. couple that with fei not getting a single damage nerf for the second time, and a way to apply more KD pressure on his natural bad matches via jab sweep, and you get a really good character. not because he dominates all his matches, but because its hard to find characters that beat him.
the difference between fei and yun seems to be that one character ended up being top tier by default, while the other looks like he was designed to be the best. by the time the tiers shake out, i think yun will end up having a 1-2 ugly 3-7 matches, but at the same time will have a bunch of dominating 7-3 matches. fei’s matches will probrably be less extreme. mostly 5-5’s, one or two 4-6’s, and a handful of 6-4’s
i think yun gets more hate because he dosent have a specific character type as of yet who consistently gives him problems. he has ways to deal with everything, and it looks like he can play his game against whoever. thats also why i think fei’s bandwagon isnt as big as it should be for a top 2 character. people dont jump ship to just not lose matchups and get more 5-5’s while playing patiently. you jump ship because you want to dominate with sexy offence and go 7-3 against some people
its well noted, even by mago that turtle type characters with fast walking speeds consistently give fei a hard time. maybe people will start to hate fei as equally if/when yun gets figured out
