It could be many reasons.

It doesn’t have to mean he’s worse off, there’s just more players using other characters over him. The fact is that popularity is a quantitative value, it doesn’t represent the qualitative aspect of characters. If I recall, Gouken received a fair amount of positive tweaks. So there’s just no wide-scale level of information indicating that Gouken is worse off.

By that logic, Dictator should not even be represented that high at all with the “nerfs” he got. I viewed them as buffs and I think I’m right on that point since there is some semblance of truth to it indicated by the rankings right? Maybe.

As far as I understand and see, the two best known Japanese Gouken users are represented by Bullcat and Desora in console SSF4. I think Desora’s on some break recently so it doesn’t seem like he has been putting that much time into AE. No idea about Bullcat. It’s like AE videos are so obscure now and people haven’t the time and devotion to cover Youtube videos from Niconico now.

I’m confident those two can definitely hang with the rest of the top players and their respective selections if they go against each other regardless of BP.

I personally think that BP arcade rankings are an excellent way to determine tier rankings. I couldn’t rely on them for the original SF4 arcade version because the console characters were missing. But with this version, it’s a lot more reliable.

I wish I had the full list of people in the top 500 or something. Going to the Japanese BBS is not helping… I also wish that baba would post the “top 5 in BP rank for each character” again.

My personal convictions regarding the characters was that Gouken had gotten nothing really new that convincingly overcame his bad matchups. Bison has also felt the same even with his “nerfs” just from watching AE videos. He goes up because Honda and Guile are no longer dominating, while he can stand his own against dive kicking twins and Fei Long IMO.

The fact that Yun dominates so easily just speaks to the power of the character. There’s no way he would be represented so well in the top 150 if he was overrated.

I think popularity indicates strength, but unpopularity doesn’t necessarily show that a character is weak/low tier. People don’t choose characters in a vacuum. There’s a “me too” aspect as well.
That and certain character archetypes are more popular than others just by design.

Well, it’s the same argument for and against our online rankings. It’s a popularity contest too. The only positive notes for the Japanese ranking card system is that it’s more refined. People pay for cards and level them up through winning. You’ll never know how the quality of matches are picked out.

There might be a lot of Daigo nut riders following him and challenging his head-to-head machines and stalking him and losing giving him all those points.

Whatever the case, I’ve heard many instances about point farmers from Kim1234 himself. And that there are people that pay others to play and rank up their cards just for their names to be put on the leaderboards. Make of it what you will.

Our online leaderboards are just a bit worse since it’s exploitable through point boosters (joining same ranked matches and forfeiting).

It won’t really give him a lot of points unless they have tons of points themselves, which most likely would mean they’re good players. I read that in Vanilla, Mizoteru (top Blanka player) used to challenge Daigo whenever possible, and that he kept beating him. Daigo would have lost a lot of points because of this because the BP difference was about 200K. Perhaps a similar thing happens now, but even if you remove Daigo from the picture, there are still 5 other Yuns with over 50K BP.

The thing is in this game you can have a really good character but if they don’t do well against popular characters (Yun/Yang/Fei) their strength isn’t going to be well-represented in the arcade ranking. I think that for the top tiers it’s pretty easy to see who the good characters are, but everyone else is basically just lumped in the mid-tier, and their position in the rankings just indicate their popularity. I did a rough count the other day and most of the cast seem to have a lot of trouble breaking 35K, which seems to indicate that this game has a really big mid-tier.

Yup. When I went to Big Box, there was a Guile (I think Master level) who would only put his card in against players he knew he could beat. If he couldn’t beat them, he’d leave immediately and go to another linked cabinet. If he could, he’d stay.

I know those point farmers and nut riders probably won’t make a huge difference. And seeing as how there’s players with multiple cards, it’s more like staring at the PSN leaderboards without the point boosting since a lot of people make new profiles and set it on single characters to use only. The only authenticity to the Japanese arcade ranking cards is pretty much that the quality of their matches don’t suffer lag. Basically just find the people to beat up and farm them or go to a new location and prey on fresh meat to some degree.

But once that stops, I think that’s where the quality of Japanese players start building. The bigger they are, the harder they fall (in BP!)

im with you in the guile case but the problem,is that you dont know all the players,you get baited by a 10 k ryu when in fact he can OCV your family(lol)…

hmm im not sure but maybe they update the GM thing just the way they update UM, what, once/twice a month? so you can reach GM condition but since the system is not going to update GM everyday, youre stuck in Master.

and uh, from what i know, to reach master you need 35K BP, not 30K.

I thought Grand Master is a top something percent of Masters rank. That’s what I gathered from looking at the original arcade rankings.

i think it has been mentioned before… GM = 40K+ BP AND be in the top 100. Sure the condition might change(like the BP needed) but thats whats written on the official blog.

I see there are some Grand Masters who have less BP than Masters. Are these Master ranked players just late to the party or were they demoted?

It’s probably not up to date. They refresh once a month or something for the leaderboards? Or it updates in real time?
