SSF4 Akuma Match Up Thread

Id like to see if we can discuss and breakdown the Blanka matchup, it is really annoying for me to deal with him and I feel that Im really limited on what I can do in this fight. any help?

Blanka, and not ryu, is definitely a character that you can’t vortex…his ex upball shit will beat all your ootions…when you got your ultra loaded he might be scared to use it and you can attack him a bit on wakeuo, but before that moment you just gotta bait him intomdoing stupid shit. This is one matchup where the keywords are PATIENCE and good anti airs. You basically have to out lame blanka…try getting an early life lead and turtle the shit out of him…air fireballs are mostly a no no because of his slide…see if you can bait it with a focus attack, but if the blanka is good he ain’t gonna slide unless you throw a fireball or he’s at a range wheremit’s safe on block.
When you’re attacking him you have to use frame traps since most of his close attacks aren’t really fast and he doesn’t have a mashable reversal…again, be ready with throw techs and aa srk and have PATIENCE. If you get too nervous and wanna close the match fast you’re probably not gonna make it

 1. cr.MP incoming blanka rolls. And cr.HK blocked hop back rolls on recovery.

 2. U1 blocked rolls and slides. Delay it a little for a blocked hop back ball.

 3. cr.MK beats electricity.

 4. Use st.HK and LK Tatsu sparingly…they tend to whiff alot.

 5. Remember that he can outpoke you for the most part.

 6. No fireballs at mid-range…at all.

Blanka has essentially nothing for Akuma once you break his incessant rolling.

I’m a former Blanka player now playing as Akuma, so perhaps I can offer a few tips.

-Be careful throwing fireballs from under a half-screen, as his Amazon River Run (that sliding HP) will go right under it and probably knock you down.
-Be careful throwing fireballs when he has EX - the EX blanka balls go through fireballs
-Lightning is a very punishable move. If you don’t have Ultra, sweep. If you have U1, demon.
-Don’t jump in - lightning and vertical ball (especially EX) are very effective as anti-air.
-Blocked blanka ball is punishable by demon, but I think you have to input it pretty quickly.
-His EX backstep roll is often used as a crossup attack - if you’re getting nailed by these, teleport out
-Blanka has very fast jump speed, so don’t wait as long to do your AA attacks as you for most characters.

Hope that helps!

If you’re not sure how to block his ex backstep roll because you don’t know if it’s gonna cross up or not, remember that you can always focus it and dash in with c.mp to do your standard bnb

Some theory fighter here, but couldn’t you use some of those Ryu Demon Flip divekicks against Blanka?
Not the ones of the forward throw, but like max distance sweep to DF, close sweep to command dive kick and DF throw to ex Df? I mean think about it, wouldn’t it either stuff his options or make them whiff?

You HAVE to learn to reversal blanka ball. Very crucial. You need to be able to punish balls so he stops throwing them out.

It’s been mentioned before, but I’m going to reemphasize you have to out turtle and lame out Blanka. Throw safe fireballs with full screen away and do low mp or dp to punish balls. It’s difficult to pressure him, and it’s nearly impossible to vortex him. What I try to do is pseudo safe jumps to bait out ex up ball after sweep or forward throw and punish accordingly. Otherwise, do a late crouch tech when you land. When he learns to stop using up ball on wake up, I’ll occasionally throw in demon flip throw or do an early jump in to actually apply some offense.

When you have life lead and ultra, you should be able to win. Just hold down back and he has really limited options. He’ll either try to hop, jump or whiff ball. If he tries to hop in, stand up and throw. If he jumps, obviously anti air. I prefer crouching fierce due to speed of him jump. If he whiffs a blanka ball, just walk back a bit to reset situation or react with low forward. If you have him in the corner with ultra, you can actually rush him down since ex up ball is punishable even on hit, so you can go a little crazy. His pokes are pretty bad so if he tries to play footsies just sweep him or something.

Try not to teleport or air tatsu out, since he can punish it pretty easily with slide.

This matchup is hella gay. It’s winnable but it’s fucking stupid. Fuck Blanka

You can’t really stuff ex up ball. Not sure if you can make it whiff, it has a pretty big hitbox.

I’d just like to add that the demon flip palm OS sweep really does seem to rock roses face.

You can try to bait him with LP.hado. Most of the time Akuma is able to block the EX.ball and can punish with Ultra afterwards. So fish for that easy Ultra chance (if you can take the possible damage of the EX.ball).

Sweep will get beaten if you’re too close. If close, choose c.LK or SRK him (optional FADC into Shaku afterwards and he thinks twice if he’ll spam elec again). On step further away use c.MK and only sweep him @ max range. So any low attack will hit him.

If Blanka has no EX bar (and ultra) in stock, after sweep immediately go for the mk.demonflipkick. It beats every move of him. Beats elec and every ball at startup. Blanka’s only options are blocking or fa.

Actually you have to delay it a little bit. A reversal is too fast and will go under the blocked ball. This applies especially for blocked super/ultra.

Better focus absorb it if unsure how to block. If you’re looking into the right direction you can hit him with lvl3 FA.

Yes, c.HP is your friend in this matchup. It deals perfectly with Blankas strange jump arc, imho.

At the beginning I hated fighting Blanka, too. But now I like it second best, right after Sagat.

Do you guys have a hard time trying to sweep > anti-air Ultra Chun-Li? I tried it like 3 times against a friend of mine today and it just seemed like the timing was always wrong.

There was one time that I thought “gotcha, bitch!”, but then she hit me with a j.kick…

so i was watching (tokido vs blanka), and after a blocked blanka ball, you can dash up then sweep to punish. (2:13) tokido doesn’t do it every time though, look at 2:28. why’s that? is it not consistent or something?

It’s a one frame link and you have to block Blankas ball while standing (!), then immediately dash forward and sweep.
After a blocked roll blanka is -24. Akumas dash lasts 18 frames + 6 frames startup of sweep = 24
And to make it clear again: It doesn’t work when you’re crouch-blocking.
Give it some minutes in practice room and you see why it seems unreliable. It’s just pretty hard to do.

What are you guys doing vs Ibuki? What is your approach? People who feel they’ve actually fought a decent Ibuki only, please.

i played a few times vs Fasoll, probably europe’s best ibuki and an italian friend of mine also plays her pretty well.

To sum it up, it’s a nightmare and it’s completely random. she can stun you in like 5 seconds if you guess wrong twice and she can punish teleports for free.

Can’t really zone her because of ex neckbreaker and he normal AA, although very situational, work pretty well even vs demon flips.

Basically you gotta play footsies with her since she walks slow and doesn’t have really good normals except her c.mp that she’ll always OS with that 3 kick move…even if you block it she’s at neutral frames so you better don’t press anything because you might eat another one and she can end it with an untechable knockdown.

Once you sweep her (or throw her, for that matter), you gotta time your demon flips or jumps perfectly, otherwise she’ll command dash under you and she’ll be at a safe distance…option selecting sweep is also really vital because she doesn’t have many answers for frontal jump ins on wakeup except backdashing.

She has low stamina so eventually you’ll take her down sometimes if you play it really cautious. She has some nice frame traps so just block and don’t press those damn buttons…a throw is a lot better than a 300 damage 500 stun target combo into neckbreaker or tsuruji.

If she’s got super ALWAYS block high during her blockstrings because her penguin kicks are pretty fast and they can be hit confirmed into super.

If you block her EX shoryuken-like move (the one where she can throw a kunai after to make it “safe” vs part of the cast) immediatelly do a fs.hp and cancel it into ultra…the fs.hp will deflect the kunai and the ultra will catch her and raper her in the dark. If you haven’t got ultra yet, simply focus dash the kunai and do your usual BNB.

punish blocked neckbreakers with c.mp > bnb or ultra and if she’s good her slide move (d.mk) will be from a safe distance most of the times so don’t try to punish it because you risk eating a reversal.

Her focus attack is REALLY good in footsies but she obviously can’t use it after you get ultra so don’t be afraid to absorb a few kunais and pokes to build meter when the match starts.

Learn to block her kunai vortex (sometimes you can try to teleport out because if she OS it it won’t catch you because it’s too fast, so she’ll just have to do a normal super jump faking a kunai and do neckbreaker on landing to catch you…to make a long story short, if you see her throwing a kunai you can attempt a teleport a few times and if you don’t get predictable she won’t punish you…it’s not that hard to learn which way to block her vortex though.

Her air throw will catch ALL your demon flips so if she’s good forget that stupid JR rodriguez stuff like c.lp s.hp demon flip or blockstrings ending in demon flips because all she has to do is a neutral jump and immediately air throw to catch you 100% of the times.

I still get raped by good ibukis tho, i still prefer using balrog in that matchup.

any more questions?

I got the last post on last page, can anyone have a look at it?

her jump is really high and floaty, it’s not easy to do sweep > ultra…gotta do it as late as possible and i believe it still might not work sometimes depending on how early she jumps over your sweep.

if you gotta do an AA ultra because she’s doing a stupid jump in c.mk is a lot better than the sweep…but if you happen to sweep and she happens to be jumping that exact moment, i don’t believe you can catch her because of her jump arc…i think you might recover in time to do a srk tho.

 • No teleports
 • Minimise your fireball use
 • Try to anticipate when she takes to the air and snuff her with j.hp
 • After knockdowns get your ass in there and start wrecking house or at least applying pressure
 • Use tk fireballs to advance on her and apply pressure
 • Ibuki bleeds. Because you can’t apply a particularly effective zoning game by way of fireballs, I tend to play offensively against her. As such, once you sink your teeth in you can do some serious damage.

Much like Rose, abstaining from fireballs really changes the way this match is played both for you AND her. Holding back on fireballs removes a lot of her offensive and reactive options which you might find a little more in your favour. Fireballs give her options - deny her that.

If knocked down, be wary about simply teleporting out as you’re free for punishment if you choose to do so. Get accustomed to blocking correctly and identifying her cross-up air knife. Her knockdown pressure has vague similarities to our own, so get used to the shoe being on the other foot. Those free combos you score on dolts who can’t block tk fireballs after palm knockdowns are now ostensibly going to be thrown back at you.

If you do take a few licks, keep in mind that she’s a stun machine. Don’t get ansty and dive back in otherwise you’ll find yourself seeing birds.

Like all match-ups its an experience thing. Try and find someone who’s good with her and get in a lengthy session to get some muscle memory and familiarity locked in.

I was playing against Juri today and everytime we went air to air she would use j.mp and everything I did lost to it. Is there anything that beats it? It was really pissing my off because it was literally the only reason I was ever getting hit. I don’t really know how to approach this match in general I just zoned and ran away and got mixups going whenever she had no meter.

Thanks for the Ibuki help guys. Another question. This time vs Abel.

I was playing a good Abel today and did the demon flip palm/throw OS to beat out his ex command throw and roll, but what if he backdashes? Besides demon, does Akuma have an OS that covers every single option Abel has…forcing him to block?

Also, can someone tell me what the notation is for OS palm/raging demon?

I asked the same question a while back and the answer was…NO. =(

In vanilla you could df throw OS srk to fuck all his options, now you gotta gambe…sorta like vs bison but with less risks…the only option that covers both backdash and roll is U1…the notation is the same as all the other OSs. Just do a flip palm and quicky input the ultra…should look like f,d,df +k (flip) > lp (palm + 1st lp of the ultra input) > lp > back > lk+hp
