SS is usually one of the best majors. Most of the Asian pros are able to make it there due to the much shorter trip + our sponsored guys get to make it out too. Almost like a mini-EVO.

Does anyone have any recent footage of wao’s Oni? He’s currently number 7 in the arcades overall, with 280K BP. He is the only Oni in the top 100.

Is he boosting, or is he just that good?

He’s just that good. He was one of the best Vanilla Kens (he rocked the banana color) and I’ve seen enough footage of his AE Oni to know that he’s legit.

I remember his Ken. He was one of my favourite players. He also used to main Dudley. I just find it surprising that he just entered the top 10 from nowhere, especially since no other Oni comes close. He’s got around 285k BP with Oni. The next best Oni has 78k.

Well Oni is probably one of the single most “You will get completely fucked if you aren’t familiar with this character” characters in the game. His damage is ridonkulous if he can manage to land some hits, and when you pair that with a player creative enough to land some hits then you can see how this could happen.

He needs to be a bit safer on his stuff but the damage certainly isn’t where is problem is.

i havent seen him in the last few months, but i know he pops up in those 1hr+ a-cho tourney vids sometimes

Oni is solid at combos, decent at mixups, decent at frame traps (mostly thanks to his b.MP, cr.MP, and LP), his safety on specials is lacking on some but his safety on normals is good. Really though it’s his overall fundamentals that are weak and the fact he (like Evil Ryu) are poorly represented and thus poorly explored.

Oni has AMAZING hitboxs on a lot of his attacks. I mean people complain about the reach on his focus but the hitbox vs hurtbox is the best in the game. His cr.MK is a smidge slower at 6F and only has 2F active but it also has incredible reach and a hitbox even better than Evil Ryu’s. His fj.HK can be spaced to crossup in a similar fashion to Cody’s which is something none of the other shotos are able to do outside of the corner AFAIK. People mention his walk speed as an issue but his OVERALL walk speed is faster than Ryu or Ken (just Ryu/Ken walk FORWARD faster but Oni is faster backwards more than Ryu/Ken are faster forwards.) and he has a really really good kara dash using f.HP + focus, and a really good kara throw using the same (it’s about 5small training blocks, that is top 10 karas in the game)

If they buff his fireball(s), his cr.MK from 6/2/16 to 6/3/15, and his EX SRK to become FADCable on block (ONLY EX) he’ll rocket up the tiers I think.

His weaker fireball and lack of safe option on wakeup means anyone who plays a shoto normally is basically going to write him off as bad. Especially not having the ability to make his only reversal option safe. Now having a 3F DP with a great hitbox, great damage, and good invincibility is a commodity many people would be willing to trade the ability to FADC to make safe. But in terms of tournament viability the last thing you want is to have to gamble. Consistency and safety almost always trumps damage potential. That is one of the reasons vortex is so strong right now, landing 200-250 damage CONSISTENTLY and SAFELY is going to trump taking a gamble on the chance you might land 350 damage doing something unsafe. Just as DPs you can FADC are safer and more consistent than other reversals.

of course this is just my opinion on Oni from the outside.

How good is his damage without his FADC combos?

Good, like stupidly good.

cr.LK - cr.LK - cr.LP - b.MP - s.HP - hp srk = 230damage off of a hit confirmed crouch tech. He can easily break 300+ without a jump in meterless (b.MP - b.MP - s.HP - HP SRK = 304damage) b.MP - s.HP however doesn’t work on crouching, good think he can do cr.MP - cr.HP - whatever.

In the corner he can get a TON of damage thanks to EX fireball being +4F on hit. He can do s.HP - EX Hadoken - s.LP - b.MP - EX Hadoken - f.LP - f.MP - Tatsu

He does a ton of damage, like higher than Cody or possibly even Evil Ryu or Makoto.

I rarely see it being displayed in actual matches. Even Ken can do decent dmg with his EX FB in the corner. Cls.mp - EX FB - c.lp - c.hp - SRK/Tatsu tho it isn’t comparable with Oni.

Still, he has amazing damage. 230 damage off of a hit confirmed crouch tech is pretty damn good, a lot of characters struggle to get that much with their normal BnBs.

That is super easy actually. If you are mashing crouch tech because you are on defense and you think the opponent is going to throw you. The cr.LK is chainable so just hitting cr.LP + cr.LK over and over no timing needed it will combo. the 2nd cr.LK is to confirm you hit the opponent. Then cr.LK to cr.LP is a chain combo no timing needed. cr.LP - b.MP is 2F link. b.MP - s.HP is a chain combo no need for timing.

Yeah , but he isn*t playing at the same arcade hall as the topplayers (Daigo Mago etc.), so weaker competition.

Imagine if Cody’s cr.LK was chainable into cr.LP.

Overall walk speed is a horrible argument. Oni usually wants to move forward not back. His options get worse read limited to non existent the further away he is.

Having crappy forward walk speed on a character that really needs to get close sucks.

Yeah, that’d be pretty damn OP. I’ve actually mentioned before I think that 3F cr.LKs that can be chained should not be cancelable and 3F cr.LK that can be canceled should not be chainable. Linkable yes, but not chainable. You shouldn’t be able to just mash out a 3F cr.LK and hitconfirm it into a combo without actually having to time the cr.LK link.
