SRK Newbie Saikyo Dojo Arcade Stick FAQ (Read this before asking questions)

You shouldn’t waste your time with the octa gate. I went out and bought the octa gate, modded my stick and tested the waters.
Pros
The circular motions are cake
blocking HIGH is easier because of the high grove
Fadc seems easier due to the high grove
the biggest thing for me is that you dont perform the game shortcuts by mistake… NYCE
Cons
Blocking low seems to not work sometimes and you have to learn the new Dback position because of the slant you could be in Up back position.
charge characters seems to suffer
Not Sure but i think it has a bigger neutral range then the square gate
it has a bigger looser feeling
Some moves are harder to perform

The list goes on in the cons but its not worth it, just prac making smaller circular motions and i believe you shouldnt be riding the gate anyway its shunned like its older brother “Mashing” … But ultimately you can try it for your self to only be disappointed

Crouch teching has never been a problem but all of a sudden it is. im trying to find vids on it but i cant or it doesnt explain it the way i need to hear it. i usually hit throw everytime the peron hits but then i get thrown … any help

Like TB said in the previous post, no stick comes stock with an octagonal. The new standard is the Sanwa JLF square gate (I’m not sure why this is the standard, it’s not that great of a stick). You’ll have to install the octagonal gate yourself, but it’s pretty easy to do so, as long as you have basic knowledge on how to use tools.

Hater!

You’re timing it wrong. When you crouch-tech, you have less time to tech a throw as opposed to when you stand tech, so you need to time it slightly later than a stand-tech. Go into training mode, set your dummy to do a basic 1 or 2 hit cr.jabs, and then throw. When you play it back, practice teching it.

Also, this is the wrong thread to post questions like this.

It’s not like I’m vehemently opposed to Sanwa, I’m more curious as to why it became THE standard for all arcade sticks instead of say…Seimitsu LS-32s, both of which are found on Jap arcade cabinets. Is it Mad Catz set the trend? Is Sanwa paying off major stick makers handsomely? What’s the deal?

The JLF was already the more popular choice in customs before the Madcatz fightstick line. Plus the Hori line was almost always Sanwa except for special editions or budget sticks. LS32s were generally more niche, though certainly well-loved.

Having seen how both LS-32s and JLFs hold up in arcades after long periods of time, to me choosing the JLF is a no-brainer. JLFs really take abuse better than LS-32s.

Pardon the bump, but I didn’t get a reply.

Hey guys I’m new here, wish I’d found this place ages ago. I’ve been playing beat em ups for almost 20 years now, I started on the original Mortal Kombat and have been playing tekken, soul calibur, and street fighter along the way and I finally came to the realisation that I’m technically a noob so I decided to learn all the ins and outs and techniques for modern fighters. I’m playing SFxT at the mo and reckon its about time I started using an arcade stick since anyone who’s half serious about fighters seems to use them. I want a decent stick but am not sure about spending £150 on one when the next gen consoles are surely only a year or two away. Is it worth it at this late stage in this current gen of consoles?

There is a link to reviews in the first post of this thread. Other than that, buy the one you think looks cooler.

Thanks. I was just looking for personal experience from players here, in case anyone already has one of these.

not sure if an odd question but I just got my first joystick. I decided on a Hrap v3-sa but after reading this thread about the new hori edge having a longer lifetime i got a bit worried. how long exactly does a pcb last before it needs replacing? and is it usually cheaper to replace the part or the whole thing? I got my stick for $130 cdn before taxes and shipping. Do ta’s or qanba q4s ast longer? Thanks!

I don’t think either stick has been around long enough in order to verify their statements of increased durability and reliability. It sounds like marketing BS to me.

I am debating on buying the SSFIV TE S, The Soul Edition SCV, or going HORI and getting their SCV stick. I have an import Hori UMvC3 PRAP VX SA and it’s great, yet the start and back button placement are not to my liking and I am not yet into modding.
In another thread, someone mentioned that the entire TE and TE S family were problematic.
Is there any credibility to this statement?

Hello SRK. I hope I’m posting this in the correct spot, after reading the new members rules I don’t think my situation dictates the need for it’s own individual thread… anywho. I’ve been going to locals every week and slowly been getting more and more into the scene there. The main game I play is UMvC3 and I tend to fare very well with everyone there (I win the majority of my matches). However, I can’t help but feel out of place because everyone there uses Arcade Sticks, while I use a standard 360 controller… also worth noting that I don’t use the D-pad, but the analog stick on the controller. I don’t tend to drop combos and I use a fairly high execution based team (Wesker, Magneto, Vergil). Stuff like Magneto’s full screen Magnetic Blast Carry combos and Hyper Grav corner loops are second nature for me, as well as Vergil’s sword loops. Regardless, the other people I play against call me crazy for not using an Arcade Stick and they say it’s “absolutely necessary”. I’m torn. I want to compete to the best of my ability and the stick looks tempting, but if I purchase a stick It’ll most likely be the Madcatz MLG Arcade Stick based off of the Madcatz Street Fighter 4 TE line of arcade sticks that were considered tournament staples. The main problem being they run $159.99 I believe and I don’t want to make the investment unless it will help me compete better with my peers, or at the very least understand their thoughts on why an Arcade Stick is a “necessity”. Also, with the recent announcements of the next generation consoles on the way by this upcoming holiday season should I just wait it out at this point? Thanks in advance for any guidance or advice you can provide me!

People who tell you that you need to play on x controller are sheep. The real question is, are you comfortable using what you currently are? There is no reason to switch if the answer to that question is “yes.”

As for next gen, one would hope older controllers will still work, but there is no word about that at all.

Here’s an odd question, or it may be a common question. Either way, I’m going to ask it.

I recently got an arcade stick, and I’m having difficulty with my fireball and dragon punch movements from the left-hand (P1) side. When I’m on the right-hand (P2) side, I have little to no difficulty whatsoever pulling off the moves, and even the special/ultras in SSFIV AE. But as a Cammy player, that’s a big part of my arsenal, if I’m stuck on the P1 side. I have tried the Square, Octagon, and Circular gate on my stick, and have found the circular to be the most comfortable. Is it simply a matter of practice practice practice, or is there something I’m doing wrong?

I realize this would probably be easier if there was some replay data, but I’m afraid I am incapable of providing such. Any tips of the trade?

It’s a common problem. Most people have a preferred side for execution. I also execute better on P2 than P1. It probably has to do with the fact that you can use more thumb control for P2 movements, but more finger movements are required for P1.

No secret to it other than practice, practice, practice.

That’s what I figured… thanks for the quick response.

I have a basic question. What are the numbered layouts for the direction for the joystick/ pad. For example, I know that 2 is down I think but what directions are 1,3,4,5,6 etc. ?

Take a look at those numbers. Now grab your stick, put it on your lap, and look down at it. That’s the numbered system.

1 = down-left. 2 = straight down. 3= down-right. 4 = left. 5 = neutral. 6 = right. etc etc etc.

So a DP motion from P1 side would be 6-2-3. DP motion from P2 side would be 4-2-1. Get it?
