SRK Lounge Welcomes Your Shenanigans

AS EVERYTHING is plug 'n play now, I’ll build my next rig.

Even liquid cooling is a no-brainer, anymore.

Dell was having an obscene sale at the time. The PC priced out to over $3,000. I got it for $1,800 or so. I knew the benefits of custom builds then, as I do now. Still done with PC gaming. I don’t ever see that changing.

Think about that. They had a $3,000 dollar rig on sale for $1,800. And again, Dell.

Holy shit. I’m converted. PC gaming is awesome .

I didn’t know there was a Cruel Intentinos 3. I’ve seen 2 and the first one on many ocassions. There some hot PoAs in this movie. But I know none of their names.

On a couple of different scenes the hotties are wearing skirts but as things start getting “hot and heavy”, their panties get lowered as their skirts are still on. I love scenes like that. Must be why I’m such a CFNM fan.

This has been THE INVINCIBLE SWORDSMAN saying:

Hunh. This movie is kinda weird. Lots weird backstabbing and pretend love going on. And bad acting. Lots of bad acting.

Just for fun, I looked up the most basic Alienware desktop that Dell is currently selling. The lowest price is 1,999.00 before taxes. I looked up all the parts for what they are worth vs what they are being sold for in the Alienware.

Intel i7 3930k - $600 USD retail
Windows 7 64bit Home Premium - $99 USD retail
8gb DDR3 1600mhz RAM (no brand name offered from Dell) - $35-45 USD retail depending on brand
Nvidia GeForce GTX 555 (which is apparently integrated graphics because I can’t find the actual card anywhere) - $???-$200 USD for the gtx 560, so lets use that as a benchmark.
1 tb hdd - $99-100 USD retail
CD/DVD burder - $20 USD retail
PSU? No information given.

We can safely assume that purchasing a motherboard to match those specs is around 100-200 bucks, if that. Now consider the fact that Dell doesn’t tell you what MOBO is in their machine. Also, that you have very little room to upgrade later down the road, which is exactly what they want. Why sell parts when you can sell an entirely new system?

Now keep in mind that Dell is absolutely massive, and has many many contracts and partnerships with hardware manufacturers to get these things for god knows how much. For the sake of argument, if you were to go and build this yourself, it would cost you in the neighborhood of 1.1k. Give or take. 1.1k is not bad for a gaming rig, especially since it has an incredible CPU. However once you factor in the cheaply manufactured parts, unbranded RAM with no details other than its speed, a weird video card, an unbranded hdd, and a cheaply made plastic case, and zero aftermarket cooling options, Dell probably only pays about… on the high end, 600 bucks for these things. These are far from the same quality parts that you would get if you ordered them outright, or had a custom shop build it. You also have to take into consideration the horrible cooling and air flow that these things have, which severely shorten the life of the hardware.

That means they are making upwards to 1400 per sale. They stuff it full of LEDs, and slap “Alienware” on it, and the price nearly triples.

EDIT: After looking at their $3,000 dollar Alienware, they doubled the RAM (which is about another 45 bucks) and doubled the HDD space (which is another 100). So for 150 more dollars, they mark up the price 50%.

Vynce, I am half tempted to drop some money into a case and just give it to you. I’m sorry that Dell left a stale taste in your mouth, but this isn’t what PC gaming is about. I could spend 1.5k and give you a machine that you could use for the next 5 years, and at that point you could just swap out video cards to upgrade.

alienware you buy for the looks and namebrand. They’re the Adidas of pc gaming

@rabbit

^ that’s what I’m looking for in the future. A beast machine that will last a while and help me towards my career and during it as an artist.

Not a problem. As far as art goes, our new line of cases are beautiful if I do say so myself. We are working on a deal with Fractal Design to carry their stuff exclusively. http://www.fractal-design.com/?view=

7/10 would bang

Alienware - piece for piece, you’re going to be paying about 2.3~2.5 times what it would cost to build it yourself - minimum.

The best of the boutiques - DigitalStorm - will still run you about double.

I love the simplistic design of them. Fuck having skulls and neons everywhere.

Right? I absolutely love them. Especially this one.

I would offer this to anybody who isn’t entirely dependent on a disc drive, which most people aren’t these days.

I’m partial to HAFs, myself.

Those sons of bitches keep shit cool.

I think DigitalStorm was using those for a bit.

I know one of the boutiques was… they are pretty hot, I agree.

I still prefer a solid HAF, with its built-in 6 fans, lol.

My computer is my media station. I absolutely need my dvd drive and my blu ray drive on mine :stuck_out_tongue:

Skulls are how you let people know your case is metal. I want people to see my case and know that I sold my soul to Satan to get it.

I build media stations. I’m about to ship one out to Josh Eppard, drummer for Coheed and Cambria.

I have never built my own PC. Are there any good beginner’s guide to creating a good rig? All I know is to stay away from ailenware

I put blue LEDs in my case because it keeps my parts cool.

Good God, I hope you can fly the thing. I try to avoid a lot of fans, especially when liquid cooling is just so damn clean.

I’m working on a PC that is entirely submerged in mineral oil, no fans at all.
