I know what you mean and I too have never “liked” that saying, but I look at it this way, Mill. How can a person know the difference between good and evil if they are we are never taught the difference between the two? Also, if people were to want to prevent bad things from happening then how could you when these bad things have never happen? How can you save someone if can’t tell or know that they are trapped? You can’t cure what you can’t tell that’s a disease. Bad things can, will, and must happen to not only to challenge people’s will, but to also bring the good out of people.
And sometimes tragedy is a way of bring people closer. I mean, look at the floods, tsunamis, earthquakes, tornados, hurricanes, ect. All these are horrible and effects a lot of people’s lives but do you see how it also brings the right kind of people to help those in need during those situations? If I was to use SRK as an example, I mean no harm when I use this example, but look at Mummy B and Darsik. Two tragedies, but it brought thousands of members closer than any game or tournament ever could.
As for Job (Joe-b), I see how you and other say that was “a bet” and Job got the bad end of the stick, but that wasn’t God’s bet. It was actually the devils bet/ idea. He wanted to break Job’s spirit, but more importantly, destroy Job’s faith in God which was “the bet”. Can he be broken? Through all of that turmoil, he stayed focused. It’s hard to people in those shoes in that exact situation, but if I was to put my own self in the equation: I’ve lost my mother, my grandmother, two unborn children, ect but not once has those loses made me bitter. Nor has it made me hateful when I see people happy with their families on Thanksgiving/Christmas/Family Reunion. Nope. It only made me stronger. Now, I have no one to hold my hand, to get advice from, or to just be like a child when I’m around them. Instead, it made wiser, stronger, and self reliant. The same way my mother was.
Million’s point stands: Job was played with and tortured just to prove a point. Any way you slice it, that isn’t cool.
As for good and bad, or good and evil, those are value judgments. They’re not intrinsic to nature. People spend a lot of time torturing themselves about what they did to deserve good thing X or bad thing Y, but the truth is that good actions and bad actions don’t necessarily correspond to what life throws at you, and they definitely don’t correspond to what nature throws at you. A tornado doesn’t care if it kills a mass murderer or a busload of children.
Once you accept that the universe is neutral and indifferent, it’s much easier to get on with living life according to your own concerns.
people need to stop with this bullshit, “oh japan really needed this” like it a) somehow makes sense or b) somehow makes it ok that team USA shit the bed. they have all these rights, is it really too much to ask for american women to just mudstomp the fuck out of heaux in athletic competition? really, can we just get that?
Ahh yes. Let’s all be salty because a team which 2 weeks ago NOBODY KNEW OR GAVE 2 SHITS ABOUT suddenly lost. NOW we all give a shit right? And we’re only supposed to give a shit about America?
This has been THE INVINCIBLE SWORDSMAN saying:
Suck it up ladies. Contrary to belief there are other things going around in the world. Let’s not pretend like we give a shit all of a sudden and will continue to give a shit about women’s soccer. Because we all know you don’t. All you care about is “America” and (far more importantly) america winning sometihng against another country.
I feel glad for Japan. They deserved to win this game. Just as much as USA deserved to that game where Abby Wambach headed the ball in vs Brazil in in the final seconds of extra time to tie a game they were outplayed. If that game was won because of “The American Spirit” then this game can be won by Japan for the same reason except switch out “America” with “Japan”.
I didn’t hear about this soccer bullshit until yesterday. You people could at least made a big deal when they won the whole shabam. Still not giving a fuck.
Also, this whole nothing that people “should be” watching is god damn disgusting. Oh no, men have no interest in women’s soccer. It’s not just men who don’t have interest, NOBODY FUCKING DOES. Male, female, platypus, etc. Fuck you. There are a million soccer games going on at once but people need to turn their attention to this because women are involved.
lol this is probably the dumbest “point” i’ve seen in awhile. yes i agree, when i watch international competition and cheer for USA i am also cheering for the team they’re playing against to lose. and as far as not caring about women’s soccer out of season, so fucking what. that’s the entire point of the world cup and international competition, in general, for people to rally around sports that they don’t usually watch or care about bcuz they’re cheering for their countrymen.
and as far as who “deserved” to win, nobody said that japan didn’t deserve to win.
The funny thing to me was, immediately after Japan won the Copa America quarter finals was going on and Brazil and Paraguay had to go to penalty kicks.
Brazil missed 4 penalties in a row, you can’t write this shit. They IMMEDIATELY out did the U.S.'s women’s team blunder.
Well, we’re pretty committed for one, and then secondly, we are having to apply for Visas to China secondly, and it is easier to do if one of us has a work Visa, and the other has a spouse Visa.
So saying America “shit the bed” isn’t downplaying Japan winning? Sounds like a justification for getting your feelings hurt to me. Poor America. How dare they lose to a country that’s still suffering!

This has been THE INVINCIBLE SWORDSMAN saying in his best Bandit Keith voice:
Gotta agree with Rock and Thurst on this one. At the heart of it all this is a competition, meaning that both parties are competing and in effect, playing for their respective nations. The nation most deserving to win should be the one that displays the most skill within the competition. Whether or not Japan has been through hardship shouldn’t be a reason for them “deserving” to win a game.
Is it a nice way to build morale? Sure. But from a personal standpoint, if I won something just because of some karmic obligation and not because I actually deserved it, I would feel utterly dissatisfied. (Note: I’m not implying any foul play with Nippon.)
you’re taking issue with americans cheering for american teams…instead of cheering for japan (for reasons completely unrelated and unaffected by sport). sounds like you’re an idiot to me.
I believe they call it “facebook”. Whoever can put the most pretentious quotes in their status and reach 1000 friends(90% of them you’ll never see or talk to) wins!
