SRK Lounge: The Search for Ronin

Japan has an isolationist culture in general, it’s not just pop culture but their perceptions about even their nearest neighbors are skewed. It’s not a slight against them it’s just how their society functions.

If you’re not Japanese, you’re Crapanese.

Isolationism is a set of foreign policies set by the nation’s leaders to keep out of other countries. In that case, Japan was an isolationist culture during the shogunate period, but no, today, Japan is not an isolationist culture or country.

Being oblivious to certain things or certain people can be a true blessing indeed.

You’re right, I stand corrected. I extended the definition past its core meaning. tips hat

What I should’ve said is that the Japanese have such a homogenized society that they tend to either not know or have a uniquely skewed view of other countries or regions, with the exception of those who either travel regularly or have some specific interests. Other countries are exposed to more international media than Japan.

Which leads to some interesting conversations- like a Japanese acupuncturist wanting to live in Alabama because “real American freedom” can be found there, or another guy thinking most Chinese girls have much bigger boobs than Japanese.

Sigh, we know. Video was posted here mere minutes after it happened.

What you say is true about every country I have personally traveled to. Americans are egregious about it though. One engineer I worked with, now this guy is highly educated, asked this German engineer if he flew over China from Germany to SoCal. A lot of my current coworkers have not been around the US all that much, many of them only have left the state a handful of times and these people are in their old age, having made ok to decent wage. Most people don’t bother questioning (because critical thinking makes you edgy, you don’t want to critically think, fit in be like everyone else) what they see on the media so in the end, most people only know generalizations and stereotypes. What’s irritating, at least with my redneck coworkers, is that they think these stereotypes are true. Stereotypes make good comedy, that’s it.

Lol. We’ve all experienced something similar, but it’s still not quite the same as the Japanese.

I’ve been to Romania for example, and I spoke to people who knew surprising things about other countries just from a general perspective; like the waning bauxite mining industry in Jamaica, or America’s electoral college. In Italy, I spoke with non-weeabos who were pretty familiar with Japanese culture even though this was a digression from another casual topic.

It’s a stark difference from being in Japan, where there’s no imposed onus to see another non-Japanese perspective, due to a lack of societal relevancy. You can’t compare it to Western ignorance- where being ignorant is still looked upon with some level of disdain or disappointment (e.g., this topic of conversation we’re having probably doesn’t happen often in Japan), because we’re exposed to more cultures on average, thus increasing expectations. I’m sure there are enough expat bloggers who have interesting anecdotes regarding these scenarios.

I really don’t know what the average Japanese know about anything really. I know for sure the average Japanese doesn’t know what “Vietnam” is. Chugoku or chugokujin is understandable. I’m guessing they’re probably not too bad in their ignorance. I’m guessing. They can’t be worse than obnoxious Taiwanese people who think everything came from them.

Your average American isn’t exposed to more culture and disdain is shown towards the intelligent. What the fuck is a geek? Someone who knows how to code? That dude is making $$$ depending on his job.

In Europe, they are more exposed to cultures because how close everything is and they don’t weird antagonistic feelings towards onr another like your average redneck will say shit like “dem mexicans hurr durr the chinese are taking over pearl Harbor”

It truly is fascinating… I’m back watching the vid of DSP playing DMC4 Special Edition again…so far I haven’t seen him use even 1 charged shot…not even one. He’s also using tons of gold continue orbs, of course. It’s surprising he’s even getting through the game at all…probably playing on the “Human” difficulty setting, perhaps? (I am watching part 2 since I found it first…should’ve started from the beginning)

He might actually be worse than even my old friend that was terrible at this sort of game (the guy was terrible at most games, actually)… this person I knew actually gave up on the 2nd boss of the first Bayonetta game, if I recall.

…anyway, this is amazing to see someone that is this bad at DMC4… I feel like I am a scientist that is observing the behavior of a completely new species we just discovered a few minutes ago.

Nice 60-75 today after the big thunderstorm yesterday.

A brief respite from the heat

It seems the worship of Matriarch stopped.

Dandy J didn’t stopped giving a fuck, he got fucked over. He put up the clip of the JWong/Daigo double KO at one of the fight clubs for SSF4 and he got a take down notice from “Double Perfect Productions” which took down his whole account because youtube dumb shit. IIRC Double Perfect Productions is the name they use for the company when they do Evo stuff so…

Ayyy

The first homo-genius clone of sort of lives on, but it’s not regularly updated and imo it’s nowhere near as charming as Dandy’s old efforts. [link]
