I’m not only white, I’m from Mississippi, and right off the top of my head I thought of George Washington Carver, Langston Hughes, and Phillis Wheatley. Google the last one, she’s a pretty great poet (and the first black person to be published in America), especially notable that she did it in the 1700s.
I kinda wonder why we need Black History Month, though. It’s nice to honor people who deserve it by learning about them, but isn’t it a little racist nowadays to set aside to just one month, when people in the black community have contributed so much to American history and deserve a year-round place in our curriculum?
I guess I was just fortunate to have grown up in a school that did recognize Black History Month, but also took time throughout the year to note people in history and literature from all races who had contributed, which is kind of noteworthy because of where I’m from.
White History Month: March 1 - January 31.
