How often are these saudi princes getting arrested now? There was the one in LA (second link) who was forcing female workers to try to fuck him, or watch him get blown by dudes, all while not paying them or threatening to kill them (yeah, charges mysteriously got dropped). There was the one who was speeding waaaaaaaaay over the speed limits (those charges also got dropped, after he fled the country). And now this one is busted with four tons of cocaine.

File this one under “How to handle children at MTG events.”

I had a frustrating experience at gameday this weekend that I need to vent and/or get advice about. There is a boy (11ish?) that has started to become a regular attendee of events. To put it kindly, he is not pleasant to be around. He is annoying and rude, but I feel like there is a good kid in there somewhere. I think he is just over compensating to try and fit in with the other competitive players. I don’t know how to handle this kid’s behavior. To make matters worse, I think he has a pretty terrible role model. His father also plays in the events and noted that I “have a strong handshake for a chick” before our round. His father also told the boy to shut up and go away when he annoyed him while we were trading. To top it all off, his father said “I can’t stand you when you are not on your meds.” Seriously…. He said that right in front of me, which had to have been humiliating for the boy. So I think he is just a product of his upbringing.

I am extremely cautious about how I interact with children at MTG events, because I know that any “parenting” from me could easily spiral out of control if the parents get involved. If I sternly express my true feelings to this child, the parent could get angry and attack me for chastising their sweet, innocent baby. I think the other players (90% male) just want to ignore this boy’s awful behavior and just let it be, because we are not his parents and it isn’t our problem. But it sort of is our problem, because his behavior makes me upset and have unfortunate, negative thoughts about his well-being. You cannot imagine how happy I was to see him lose in the finals. I subsequently felt very guilty for feeling this way.

To be clear, everyone (store employees & father included) is aware that this boy is an annoying pest. If he was older, he would probably be able to comprehend that no one likes him and that his behavior isn’t helping or someone would just tell him to stop being a prick. However, he is a child…. so he just continues to seek more attention as people ignore him and/or respond negatively. Negative feedback just seems to fuel the fire. I want to be a responsible, friendly adult,** but dealing with problem children is a minefield.** When children are at events, I feel like I have to walk a thin line between being their peer/opponent and being an influential adult, while not overstepping my bounds and acting like their parent. As someone with no children, this is not my area of expertise. Please help!

The hilarious thing about it is that this is exactly how a lot of us feel about dealing with tumblrites in MTG.

Mind you, I actually like kids, BUT kids are kinda shitheads. By nature, they’re attention whores, wildly emotional and don’t know anything. I don’t really see any upside in forcing adults to compete against a little kid as an equal.
