Laura McIntyre began educating her nine children more than a decade ago inside a vacant office at an El Paso motorcycle dealership she ran with her husband and other relatives.
Now the family is embroiled in a legal battle the Texas Supreme Court hears next week that could have broad implications on the nation’s booming home-school ranks. The McIntyres are accused of failing to teach their children educational basics because they were waiting to be transported to heaven with the second coming of Jesus Christ.
At issue: Where do religious liberty and parental rights to educate one’s own children stop and obligations to ensure home-schooled students ever actually learn something begin?
But problems began when the dealership’s co-owner and Michael’s twin brother, Tracy, reported never seeing the children reading, working on math, using computers or doing much of anything educational except singing and playing instruments. He said he heard one of them say learning was unnecessary since “they were going to be raptured.”
Then, the family’s eldest daughter, 17-year-old Tori, ran away from home saying she wanted to return to school. She was placed in ninth grade, since officials weren’t sure she could handle higher-level work.
Between 2003 and 2012, the number of home-school students nationwide jumped by about a third to 1.7 million, now estimated at more than 3 percent of all students, according to the National Center for Educational Statistics.
The Texas Home School Coalition estimates 300,000 students are home schooled in the state - more than one-sixth of the national total.

I’ve sat him down and explained these things to him over and over and over again. I’ve told him all of his options that don’t have to include school, and he could do vocational instead. Or he can get certification for things like welding, etc. I’ve mentioned to him all the type of jobs he could get and would pay reasonably well.
I’ve told him, he doesn’t even have to do education, he can start a business doing art via selling T-shirts, or other things. Not good enough? Be a cop, LAPD is usually hiring, and so is LBPD. Need time to think more about what you want, do military. It will literally take care of you and give the extra time to figure shit out. Want to work with your hands? Our dad and uncle’s know people who could probably help him get an apprenticeship, or he could try and work at the local refineries which pay top dollar.
I’ve sat with him and tried helping him with school, i’ve done the good brother nonsense for years encouraging him to find his way. Telling him he needs to get his shit together. And even slapping the shit out of him for being such an outright moron. My mom already told him if he doesnt’ shape up, she’s going to kick him out of the house, and this is his fucking plan. He thinks he can do it his way, diffrent from anybody else, and fully subscribes to some idiotic notion. Even after everybody in the family has tried in one way or another talked to him about what he’s gonna do.
Sometimes you just got to let somebody crash and burn bro because that’s the only thing they are going to understand. We have given him every opportunity we possibly could have given him, we have given him all sorts of options, talks of encouragement, ideas, etc to do better. If he wants to do nothing afterthat’s on him, if he doesnt’ want to head the warning of what real life is like, that’s on him. He can learn when shit hits the fan.
