Thats kind of hard to say when you had dudes like snake eyez, filipino champ, marq teedy, apology man, filipino man, infiltration, etc. there are a lot of young cats that are hella hungry.
True dat. I overlooked those guys(mostly because they all look far older than they really are outside of Marq Teddy).
It could just be the advent of streams and the steam monster culture, but it feels like the majority of people “in the FGC” are just consumers of a product and not actively involved participants like we were, no matter our skill level.
…Now you see why we don’t invite HIM to our gatherings. A great warrior, but not so good as a representative of our noble kind. -Other Bahamuts talking to their children.
The more people you add the more you’re gonna dilute things. I look at things a bit different because of the anthropology thing too. Say, for example, that I had to represent all the different scenes. First thing I’d have to do is identify who is and who isn’t part of these groups. The thing that happens the most is people saying that if you bought a fighting game, you’re part of the community. This was a terrible idea in a number of ways:
It includes people who don’t actively participate.
It forces people in random places to be considered part of the community. While they do stuff to interact with it, the NeoGaf fighting game thread and r/kappa have to be considered as “FGC” as well as the fighting game general thread on 4chan.
It makes us responsible for anything anybody ever does who plays games. Some dude gets salty online and can’t hold an L? Oh look the “FGC” is full of scumbags.
It diluted some individual scenes that may/may not have all the same issues into one giant thing. The problem MK and DoA have properly organizing their scenes isn’t the same as anime or KoF.
I could go on about how this affected the way certain aspects got passed down, the good/bad things that came about with cracking down on SRK and a bunch of other stuff but honestly, I’m just tired of SRK bumblefucks saying random dumb shit so I don’t really bother writing in depth about it anymore. It would be impossible to say that tournaments haven’t been commodified. Whether or not this is in the best interest of the members of the community needs a couple more years. Its brought up sponsorships and good quality sticks that are easily available and all sorts of other things; it also made Evo sale spectator passes and have 2 smash games in the roster along with 2 games that haven’t been released.
For better or worse, its brought a lot more players into the fold. People can shit on SF4 for a lot of reasons, but as it stands right now, the game has enough to it that you can be successful with somebody you like. On top of that the people playing it have gotten very good at it so you see specialists really put in work. High level matches are legit high level matches. The interesting question is just how much better are our bottom tier players compared to the bottom tier players of the pre-sf4 era. It may be that pre-SF4 were better because FG as a hobby was more niche; so if you wanted to stick it you really had to bother learning things. So if you didn’t loving it, you weren’t even trying.
Question before I do something: How often does a lounge member discuss a serious, personal issue and how often is it just dogged on or actually related to?
I ain’t making an intro thread level mistake here without getting the facts right. I’m damn sure not going to start a thread about it either.
Simply comfortable after 27 years to get something off my chest. Not the most well liked or popular member here sure, but I trust loungers well enough.
