SRK Lounge: Old Administration has returned

I don’t know anyone who’s had this problem. One profession: programmers. Programmers who I’ve known to make $80K in NY make the same in Maine. I guess it depends on your talent.

so…you’re just going to ignore the part where I talked about the enormously different scale of economy in different regions, or how the poverty line where you have lived is a comfortable living in a huge part of the country? Nobody said anything about you living in luxury. You have only lived in the most expensive places in America. $27k there is not $27k everywhere. Case in point: minimum wage here is $6.25/hr. That’s $250/wk before taxes. You can probably figure out that that adds up to less than $1500/month after taxes.

I know one in particular who makes more than the ones I know in New England or New York! I guess where I come from your talent defines your pay, not where you live.

I just don’t see your point with telling me about differences in where you’re living. Everyone I’ve known doesn’t make a salary based on where they live, they make a salary based on how good they are at their jobs. I’ve never seen otherwise.

You are correct. Everybody makes the same money everywhere, and the ONLY differentiating factor is skill level. That’s why everything is made in China, and call centers are outsourced to India: because only Chinese can build stuff, and only Indians can talk to customers. There certainly aren’t economical scale factors involved. No sir.

The only person I know who works blue collar is my father. That’s it. At my old job, they tried to ship it overseas to both Cambodia and India and they didn’t have a prayer to do it correctly. It’s why I was able to demand the salary I asked for when I was there. I don’t pretend to know the plight of the entire nation, but in the fields I run in not one person I know makes money based on where they live. They all make money based on how good they are at their jobs. It’s not hard to understand.

I haven’t seen anybody miss the point this badly since the Bulls in the playoffs.

raz0r out here living high on the hog on his fat tabloid journalism earning. you still freelancing for the jersey journal?

I haven’t worked for the Journal since I was 21. I’ve worked more in marketing than newspapers these last few years.

@Raz0r

Seriously, you cannot be that naive. You’re reminding me of the rich white girls in my poli-sci classes in college who honestly believe anyone can get a job as a CEO of a multi-billion dollar corporation if they just work hard enough.

Cost of living and the money you make is COMPLETELY location-dependent. Let’s compare where I live right now as opposed to, say… New York City. NYC is 95% more expensive than Jackson, MS with the largest increase being in housing, which would be around 419%.

Don’t take my word for it though, do some research yourself.

where the fuck is jackson I just wanna move there so my wallet isn’t raped so much :bluu:

I know the cost of living. I just don’t believe me working there will determine my salary as I have NEVER had my location taken into consideration when being paid to do a job. I didn’t grow up ballin’, and Thurston has known me since I was in high school. My parents still struggle to this day. I just don’t because I did work hard enough where I quit my old job, lived half a year off my savings, and still have enough money to go drinking with a writer from 30 Rock.

I guess life is what you make of it.

You’ll make less here. A $60k job elsewhere will get you $30k here, if you can even find a comparable job to begin with. -_-

Let’s just say if you have a job in NYC, then go to Jackson and expect the same wage in the same line of work, good luck finding a job. Interviewers gonna laugh their ass off in your face.

Writer from 30 rock? Hot damn aren’t you special!

YOU HAVE ONLY LIVED IN PLACES THAT ARE EXPENSIVE AS FUCK, OF COURSE IT DIDN’T MATTER, HOLY FUCKING SHIT. You are seriously taking your 2 location sample size of experience over the experience of THE WHOLE FUCKING WORLD.

I think I am.

Yes you have, YOU JUST DON’T FUCKING REALIZE IT.

Cost of living dictates what jobs pay because people have to make enough to live there. Cost of living varies by location, hence, JOBS PAY BASED ON LOCATION. If you make $60k a year living in New York, the same job in Mississippi would only grant you $30k. The cost of living is lower, so the company doesn’t pay as much for a job in that location.

But what about the people I know who left NY to go work in New England, New Orleans, Colorado, Nevada, or any other state not in Europe? They make either equal or more than they were making in NY. Surely they are still being paid their luxurious New York salaries!

Ramon, come to the south and see if cost of living doesnt change your salary.
