So I’ve been thinking about games, and their sequels, and maybe I’m just being short sighted or negative, but I wonder: “what ‘modern’ games can and will be considered classic?” I mean, a lot of classic games of the past were flukes, and often when they make a sequel, it just doesn’t have that same “magic”. A couple examples came to mind, like street fighter 4, without getting too much into if its a good game or not, its kind of obvious it isn’t a cultural phenomenon like sf2. Another example is starcraft 2, which, while a fun and pretty game, just doesn’t feel like people will be playing it for the next decade like the original. I think it is partly to do with the market, classic games seem to need time to gestate, and game companies need to release a new title every 7 months. Call of duty comes to mind, these are some of the most popular games on the planet, but I would in no way consider them “classics” and I can’t ever imagine them being considered as so (maybe history will disagree), I’m sure they will be released like clockwork until they are no longer profitable. Just address whatever is perceived as “overpowered” come up with some new perks and guns, throw in a story about war and betrayal, you’ve got a game.
The other game that has got me thinking is mvc3. I really don’t see it ever topping mvc2 (it might, I’m just some guy on the internet), mvc2 had a really long reign because there wasn’t much else, I remember a huge fighting game drought back in the day. My fear is that everybody will decide they “scrubbed” up the game and everybody complainign about flow chart dormammus. God, I can see the shitty vs threads already.
Now I’m just rambling.

MANY people agree C0D4 is the best one in the series so far. Umm also maybe Halo1 or 2 could be a classic? I don’t know. Hopefully when MVC3 drops it won’t divide the community as much as Black OPS did

Speaking of movies, I watched Heavy Metal on Netflix the other night. Holy shit, that movie is about as weird as I remember. I saw it when I was like 10 (looking back, I watched a whole lot of age-inappropriate movies, I think), so it was interesting to see it again as an adult. It’s very…something. It’s 1970s-ness is almost overwhelming (it came out in 81, but even so…). I should watch Heavy Metal 2000 some day, I guess.
