I’m going to a game dev competition in a few hours. They just revealed the theme, which is retro.
I already thought of an idea before the reveal, but now that I know the theme, I kinda wanna make some kind of shmup. Since it would be for a mobile device, I want to avoid using on-screen controls and have everything be done completely through gestures. The levels would be randomly generated with the occasional boss.
My original idea is a game where you control a creature who is constantly hungry, and your goal is to feed it by collecting various food that drops from the sky. The amount of food collected is represented by a meter; it decreases when you move, and fills up when you eat. If the meter goes empty, you die. If the meter is filled past a threshold, you have a few seconds to burn off the excess through constant running, or else you die. The food that drops fills the meter by different amounts, so the player would have to look at the food and determine if it would be too much for the creature to eat.
That’s basically my idea that I’m going to go with, unless I come up with something good control-wise for the shmup idea. Time will be the biggest factor in what/how much I can do (48 hours).
