A fighting game is still a game. People need still need their characters to have good gimmicks so they can engage them at an emotional level. Look at Virtua Fighter. VF has a storyline but not many people could mention to you wtf is going on; so even though there is shit going on it gets accused some times of having boring, generic characters.
I mean, VF has some crazy shit going on but whatever. The fluff is minor and it is mostly to make the overall package more coherent. In all honesty that little bit of story adds to the experience whether one would want to admit it or not. We don’t make a huge deal about it but it rounds up the package because for better or worst, hardly anybody here would play a game that was just hitboxes.
