What I’ll agree with is Jim Lee has problems with sequential artwork intended to support an actual story. He’s a cover art, splash panel type, and only in limited circumstances. And he doesn’t exhibit any range in body types-- it’s the same 30-year-old male or female bodybuilder, whether they’re young, old, short, tall, skinny, fat. That looked cool in the 80s/90s, but there’s a lot of talent in comics right now that really outclasses his output.
And frankly he’s just not hungry anymore. His Punisher work from a long time ago is still really good, as well as some (emphasis on some) choice Uncanny comics. But he doesn’t have a lot left to prove. Establishing your own business and having a legion of ball-washing fans can probably do that. Frankly I consider him a relic of a past era, with a strong enough fanbase that doesn’t mind him showing his age and lack of interest to evolve… the Jay-Z of comics.
But his problems are thoroughly and utterly different from Liefeld’s offenses. Jesus Christ there is no similarity, don’t even fucking bring up Liefeld again. Just because a paraplegic sprays diarrhea on a wall and it resembles a famous artist, it doesn’t mean it’s fair to compare the two. With that out of the way, the criticism surrounding Lee starts to make sense.
he got lazy when he realized all his wildstorm properties were failing hard. i think he works best as a motivator for the next gen of artists. he had this blog with a bunch of young gun wildstorm artists at the wildstorm office. they got so much better when they started workin at wildstorm. ale garza being one of em.
Comparing Liefeld and Lee would make sense if people would realize that comparing two things in one sense doesn’t mean they have to compare in every sense. I’m almost surprised that nobody’s objected to the fact that Lee never had his own blue jean commercial.
You don’t see the problem with declaring, “Jim Lee is Rob Liefeld,” then writing several other posts in an attempt to qualify that ridiculous statement? That’s a play straight out of Fox News’ playbook, Belichick. You knew what you were doing and I think it’s bull. Whatever I got a book to read.
