SRK Lounge 14 Vancouver Riot Update: RockB Curbstomps an old Granny, her cat and her knit sweater

Forgotten gaming characters…

Stan the Bugman (or “Stanley the Bug-hunter”)… nobody remembers him(*without cheating and going to wikipedia) but me.
The main character from Crusader: No Remorse
Time Gal — there is some interesting potential for a remake on today’s systems… too bad most companies aren’t willing to take a risk these days since gaming is so much bigger now.
Karnov
Goemon, (aka “Kid Ying” in the American version of Legend of the Mysical Ninja)
Those midgets from the old arcade game Kung Fu. (*ah, upon reviewing some footage just now… they didn’t throw the boomerangs… it was the boss on that 2nd Floor. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Il24F1_TBao yes yes those were some good old times… I remember playing that game at a bus station arcade, and at the legendary “Gold Mine” in Mall of Memphis.)

On another note, it would be nice if Capcom could one day remember that Dimitri and the other Darkstalkers characters that aren’t named “Morrigan” exist in their universe of characters. Nah, it’s a safe bet that if there are 30 more games with “special guest character!” potential… anytime they go to Darkstalkers, they’ll put that damn bitch in there each and every time. Maybe it’s all an inside joke with them at this point.

no, just shows how much you like to disagree wit anything thats the majority.

These i remember pretty well. The main character from Crusader looked like a space trooper, i know because i used to play the shit out of the ps1 version.

rock now knows what it is to be owned

only the feeblest arguments have to stoop to profanity

hell no. Some people just realize that a swear word is just that…A WORD

i guess some of us are just from more genteel times

speaking genteel times i think country group lady antebellum’s name may as well be lady we wish black people were still slaves

i find it offensive

The badass grandmaster swordsman who pretty much floored both Jin and Mugen.

As for Outlaw Star, it was an incredible anime to me and had a different kind of an influence on me in terms of overall scope than Cowboy Bebop (which is clearly superior in most aspects but I’m not tiering).

The theme where they work on the ship is so cool. whitsles

PAGUA SONFAAAAAAAAAA!!!

Akira redifined the way mature storytelling could be done with animation. This was at a time when Heavy Metal was considered mature animation, but it wasn’t mature storytelling. Akira was a massive volumed piece of work condensed in 120 minutes, which is not structurally feasible but nevertheless provided a level of cinematic entertainment that just didn’t exist at the time.

This was around the time when Thundercats, unshaded/primary colored Disney Cartoons, and G.I. Joe were the best level of animation most people saw. Where mature themes were usually underscored for the sake of reaching a broader audience. Akira redefined how anime and animation was seen as a medium.

From an artist’s POV, the amount of details they put into complying with real world physics and various subtleties (like The Damned mentioning no sound in space was quite monumental for me as well) or when Tetsuo teleported they recognized that there would be a massive displacement of air and showed a powerful vacuum suction effect. These things we’re now used to weren’t traditionally implemented even in regular movies.

I usually watch the movie every 5 years or so just to recap, and I’m always impressed at how relevant the animation quality still is and now I keep finding even more nuances that I like about it.

So yeah, Akira has flaws- especially in contemporary eyes, but focusing on flaws to just call something “overrated” only makes one neglect the awesome qualities the film had and its importance in animation and film.

true. speaking of which, what’s that in your av? I’ve been wondering for a good minute now.

Indeed? I personally found the first dub of Akira to be one of the best Anime I’ve ever watched. If I could’ve found the first dub on DVD, I would’ve owned it. I did settle for the second since it is on DVD, but the first remains on my CD (yeah. it is THAT small.) Maybe it’s just me. I wish more people would show some love for the first GITS movie, but it ain’t happenin.

-Stormhammer-

I don’t ignore what Akria did for Anime and Animation in general cuz it did a lot of really great stuff, but it’s still a bad movie. I’m sorry but it is. It fails to be coherent in the end and that’s just bad.

Everyone who has said that modern/current anime is trash clearly does not know what they’re talking about. The medium is only getting better and better. Of course, the better it gets, the more mainstream it gets, and more anime gets made. With more and more shows coming out at a higher frequency, there will definitely be a lot of crap out there, but there are always a few select shows among the trash that are amazing.

It’s cool if you’re not down with the medium, but please inform and educate yourselves before popping off.

Kaffirs.

@white shadow: I remember now. I would say Meiji era/Battousai Shinta > Fuhrer > Hand of God.

I kinda miss the 80s where they would fill all bodies with copious amounts of entrails and you had the seizure inducing entrails falling out of people scenes

Wow you guys are talking about some old ass stuff.

Outlaw Star was marginal at best.

Akira was a good looking movie with a terrible screenplay. It was idiocy to think that they could do the story justice in a 2 hour movie format. But then a lot of anime has that problem. They seem to think they can condense the story into 2 hours and it just doesnt work out. I like Akira and can definitely appreciate what it did for anime in America but I would never call it a good movie.

oh and hammer, the dub was AWFUL.

old anime fans never die. we just dont have time to watch.

you like men and women!? you’re even worse than me and Million. I knew you were a freak.

Well he’s actually letting other niggas work on the system (who seem to care more) other than himself. And OS, and FMA is some good shit. Then niggas is gonna say SamCham was weak :bluu: fuck outta here.

@SWBeta: Link me to something ya coon. I would like to be interested again. I haven’t been feeling anything since Sword of the Stranger.

Huh? As far as I know anime has become more moe and introverted to appeal to otakus. The medium has become less popular because of it. There are less shows and less artists now. Also less money coming in because of DVD sales plummeting.

Everything you’re saying flies in the face of what I’ve heard. Unless you’re being sarcastic. Maybe my information is old.

@Syke1: What type of shit do you like, negromatic?

@mIRC: That’s not all anime. From what I’ve seen, it’s the slice-of-life and a few drama stuff that’s become more “moe” and otaku-friendly. There are definitely a lot more shows and artists now. As for DVD sales, I don’t know. What you’ve stated is most likely the case, what, with torrenting/piracy and all.

I don’t like the drama/reality bullshit. I lost the attraction for space operas and mech shit too. Other than that, I’m down for anything.

No Fathers Day thread?
