Jazz odyssey?
just starteed learning how to play the guitar and some guy told me that the most important chords to learn are:
E A D G B C F
major
** minor**
** Sus4**
** Sus2**
** 7**
** minor 7**
open string
barre chords
root 6 **
** root 5
** root 4**
I know what open string and barre chords are but i dont understand the the rest (marked in bold). if anyone can explain this to me i’d really appreciate it.
Your friend gave you some heavy duty stuff, I suggest just learning the shapes before learning the theory behind it, but here it is incase you’d like to know.
major: a triad contructed with the root note, the major third and the dominant fifth
minor: a triad contructed with the root note, the minor third and the dominant fifth
sus2: again, a triad, this time with the root, the second and the dominant fifth
sus4 (or sus#, # being any number): root, fourth and the dominant fifth
7: a triad and adding the sharped 6th from a scale (or flat major 7th)
And that root shenanigans from what I gathered is take the 4th, 5th, or 6th note from whatever scale and making that your bass/root note. So for example, C root 6 (am I saying this properly?) would be A G C E G ( so that’s x05553 in guitar tab.)
I’m just pulling this from the top of my head, if I made a mistake, please, correct me.
Funny you’d go to SRK for advice on this, though. xD
so i have to find the major, minor, sus2, sus4, 7, 7minor in E A D G B C F?
and i think the root stuff has to be found within the barre chords.
where can i find the shapes for this, i have no interest in learning theory for at least 3 months.
Google is your friend! Chord charts all over the place.
But you are right, you have to find how to do Emajor, Emin, E7 and so forth and then go to the next letter.
Sexperienced:
By all means, learn and practice those chords, but don’t feel like you have to have them all down before you can play songs. Pick some tunes you’d like to learn and divide up you practice time between that and the other stuff. Make it entertaining for yourself.
Simply quoted for truth, I forgot that. Got too enveloped in all the theory, hehe.
is it possible to learn songs without having to read music? i’d prefer to learn how to play song by ear.
i’d estimate most guitarists on the planet can’t read music. learning tabs is much faster.
i used to be able to read music when i played trumpet (high school band nerd), but i forgot errethang.
I agree with the statement above, although now-a-days I have been trying to learn to play by learning the song by ear…
Quick Question, I was thinking about replacing the pickups in my guitar and I have never done this before, are there any good tutorials out there on replacing them?
TAB?
Ugh.
You guys can’t be serious.
don’t judge me!
i mainly use it if i’m stuck trying to figure something out
and if i’m writing a badass riff.
You should Google wiring diagrams for whatever brand guitar you have. I assume you have a Strat, though, since you said pickups.
I’ve been playing for 17 years and I don’t know a single note or chord name outside of the open strings. I took one lesson when I was 12 and said, “yeah, I’ll never get the music in my head out through learning like this.”
My setup now is: Red Bear MK 120 head into a 70’s Acoustic Control 408 2x15 bass cab - ABY’d with an Orange Bass Terror 500 into an SWR Henry the 8x8. Pedals are: Green Russian big Muff, Blackout Effectors Musket, Dwarfcraft, Aue Claire Thunder, and a tuner.
Main guitar is an Electrical Guitar Company Series 2 prototype (the entire neck, head, and about 70% of the body is a solid piece of aluminum with a shell of paduak wood wrapped around it. It’s one of 3 prototypes that were made in exotic woods before the Series 2 went into production) - I tune to something like drop C.My acoustic is a 60’s Gibson LG-1 that used to be my mom’s. For bass I play a really unusual thing called a U Bass. It’s a 21" scale bass that uses polyurethane strings. I have an “acoustic” model as well. Sounds like an upright. They’re incredible.
I also play mandolin, banjo (nylon and steel), and a little pump organ.
Here’s a link to the one song my band has recorded: http://abandonist.bandcamp.com - just a 1 mic practice space thing, but you get the idea. The rest of the material is all over the place from structured songs to solo acoustic banjo, to complete noise. It’s just me and the drummer at the moment.
have you heard of Buckethead the guitarist? i was having a discussion with his former guitar teacher, he’s the guy who gave me the list of chords i need to learn. I decided to ask you guys what he meant by sus2, 4 and the other stuff because i knew he’d get pissed if i asked him to elaborate. Well i did… and i was right. lol.
First of all there are not “bar codes” they are BARRE CHORDS.
“do you mean every major and minor chord known?”
Heres the list - PAY FUCKIN ATTENTION
E A D G B C F
** There you see that? Did you fuckin LOOK at it? **
** Let me show you again in case you werent FUCKIN PAYING ATTENTION**
** E A D G B C F**
** that means E minor, A minor, D minor, G minor, B minor, C minor and F minor.**
“sus7 and minor7… i have no idea what you mean by this, even when i look these up.”
There is NO SUS7 and no where is a SUS7 mentioned. If you had fuckin paid attention you might notice it said SUS4. SUS4 not SUS7. SUS4 is one of the most common chords of all as well as Minor 7.
** SO you take that alphabet again (PAY ATTENTION)**
** E A D G B C F**
This means you learn
** Esus4, Asus4, Dsus4, Gsus4, Bsus4, Csus4, Fsus4**
** then**
** Emi7, Ami7, Dmi7, Gmi7, Bmi7, Cmi7, Fmi7**
“even when i look these up”
**YOU havent looked these up. You have not even tried! You are really fuckin LAZY dude. **
“same with root 6, 5 and 4.”
ROOT ON THE 6th string, ROOT ON THE 5th string and ROOT on the 4th string.
** You are really going to have to get off your lazy ass and put out some effort if you want to learn anything. Nobody is going to hold your hand and show you step by step.**
You don’t need to know chords and names to play your instrument.
I can play anything you want me to, but I can’t read any music - or know what any chord is called.
It is harder to communicate with other players like this, but I’ve developed my own language and an extremely individual style of play by going my own way.
how can i play a guitar if i dont know any chords? knowing chords and reading music are 2 totally different things.
You put notes together until you like the way they sound. There’s your chord.
I guess but that takes way too long. learning chords isnt hard to do.
How do you even know how to “scale” without being taught.
Holy shit man, you got verbally raped up in the wazoo, lmao. He sounds tough as nails but hang with him. You’ll learn a lot.
