For that kinda price, I’d imagine you could commission something. Then again, my knowledge of anything electric is minimal.
Dude, do you know how many archtop hollowbodies you can get for less than that? WAAAY less than that? From good brands? Hell, I’ve seen good conditioned vintage 335’s for less than that.
In jazz circles, 335’s and 345’s are not desirable. They’re too small. An ES-175 is cheaper and is more like something they would use, I was just pointing out the best of the best.
Those big boxes sound amazing, especially through a Polytone amp. I have a couple friends who are professional jazz musicians here in NYC. We don’t converge at all on our preferences of gear.
Purity of tone is the most important thing to those guys.
I’m a bassist. Can I hang with you six string guys?
lol bass
S’long as it’s a six string bass, I think we can make an exception
I used to have:
02’ Ibanez MIJ PGM30WH w/ dimarzio Evolutions.
05’ Ibanez Prestige RG2570 Vital Silver
90’ Ibanez MIJ RG550
04’ Epiphone Gibson Les Paul Custom(Alpine white) with active EMG 81/85s
01’ Fender Tex Mex Jimmy Vaughan Stratocaster
I now have:
Nothing :shake:
A misuse of funds(AKA evo/vegas) caused me to sell them all to pay rent/food for my last few months away at college. It’s okay though because I just got a job offer today for a good amount of money so I’m already looking for a new guitar. most likely an Ibanez 20th anniversary RG550 or an Ibanez PGM301WH. :nunchuck: I’ve been playing guitar since I was 11(I’m 23 now), so if you have any questions feel free to ask!
P.S. Rodrigo y Gabriela>*
I’m really digging them, can’t wait to see them in concert. Anyone else listen to them?
Bassists welcome!
Starboy, that’s really sad to hear, but man’s gotta eat, ahah. Good to hear you’ve got a steady job now.
Scentless: My electric isn’t a real strat either. I got it from http://www.rondomusic.com
Warpticon recommended it to me, and I haven’t regretted it, it’s a great beginners guitar. I find it better than my friends Squier.
Anyone have hints on how to practice playing different things with both hands? Like my left hand is tapping out the bassline, while my right is tapping/playing the melody. Shit is incredibly hard.
Bassist here. Don’t have a 6er yet, but I do have a 5.
Currently I’m shopping for an active 4 with string spacing conducive to slap, since my current 5 has really tight spacing and my 4 is in piees right now in prep for repainting/serious modding.
I need to learn more “metal” techniques and shredding.
Nice amp. :pleased:
Also, maybe the thread title should be changed to include bassists and maybe drummers too?
When two notes are tied, it means you play them as a single note with the duration of both. For example, a dotted half note (3 beats) tied to a quarter note (1 beat) means the note is played for 4 beats.
[01:31] <+Warpticon> that’s ONE POWERFUL AMP
[01:31] <Jeeebus> STFU
[01:31] <Jeeebus>
You guys are all assholes. :shake:
It’s so cute! And it’s bigger than my Roland Mciro Cube.
At the risk of stating the obvious… no. It doesn’t. Playing Guitar Hero is nothing like the experience of playing a real guitar.
Here’s my shit. It’s cheap, but I can usually coax it to work. The guitar is a piece of plywood hacked out by Kramer, and pretty much everything else on it is replacement parts to my specifics. I took out all the pickups and put an SD Hot Rails in the front, took out all the pots and put in new wiring and a single Ernie Ball volume pot in the second tone control position, and I’ve been through several nuts (no homo). The fulcrum trem is also blocked off. I designed the guitar to be a blunt instrument, just one loud-ass pickup and one volume control in the signal path, and no other frills. It’s idiot proof.
The amp is kind of new. I sold off my old power amp and 4x12 because it made for a needlessly huge, needlessly loud rig. I wanted a combo that could also deliver volume and transparency. I get my sound mainly from The Guv’nor II, which is the little gray box sitting on top of the amp. It’s a good pedal with a very brown distortion. I never turn it off when I’m playing, since it cleans up perfectly when I roll back the guitar’s volume.
From the old musicians thread:
Hello.
I play bass. Taught the “right way to play jazz bass” back in 2000 and have been playing ever since.
I play an Ibanez SR905 ran through either a Ampeg BA-220 for practice, or a single Ampeg SVT for gigs. This rig isn’t paid off yet
I like my Ibanez, but I HAVE been eying this Peavey for quite some time. It’s a 5er fretless. It has the best slide sound I have ever played. I’m just broke
My guitars:
Ibanez Artcore AFS75T semi-hollow body - my secondary guitar
Ibanez Prestige RG1570 - my main guitar
Samick Interceptor IC-4 - bought it for a very cheap price few years ago. Surprisingly, it was (and still is) a good guitar. I gotta get rid of it, though; I don’t need three electrics.
I used to own an Ibanez RG450DX (the black one with the mirror-like pickguard) and an Ibanez RX40 (my very first guitar).
Amps are a no-go in my apartment. So, I gotta use the next best things for playing and recording:
- Line 6 POD 2.0 direct box/amp simulator
- Boss DR 880 drum machine
- Roland RS-5 synth
I started playing guitar off-and-on about 11 years ago, back when I was in college (hence the off-and-on). But I’ve only gotten serious about it in recent years. I can read music, but I’m not a fast sight reader, and I’d rather avoid reading while playing.
I started with basic rock stuff. I think the first complete song I learned was Angry Chair, by Alice in Chains. My musical tastes have changed over the years, and I now play mostly fusion-y music… jazz + rock stuff. I keep all my guitars detuned to E-flat (all strings 1/2 step down from standard E). There’s no real reason why; I just prefer the flat sounds.
And, if I can offer a bit of advice:
Accompaniment can help a lot. It doesn’t have to be a complete production that you’d want to put on tape… just something that has rhythm and chord progression that you can play along with. It can be something you hear during a commercial, or just some basic harmonies that you created on synth. Playing on top of that can help you better understand where and which notes can ‘fit’.
Alright, that was long enough. It’s guitar, though… I love guitar.
YESSSSSSSSSS! They’ve been in Seattle TWICE and I haven’t been able to get out there and see them live. Dammit I want to.
I can’t imagine why you would want to get rid of a good guitar just because you have others. I assume it sounds pretty different from your Prestige (Artcore goes without saying). Unless space is a major limitation.
TheSix, which Peavey 5er are you eyeballing? Grind? Cirrus? Peavey makes excellent basses. I want a Millenium BXP 4 string. Thing sounds and plays retardedly nice for a $240 stick.
Oh, my squad:

Looking to add about 15-20 members to the family this year. the jazz bass on the far right is being modded to death. It’s getting new tuners, control plates, pots, knobs, tuners, paint job, pickups, and a modified headstock.
We’re going to have to draw the line somewhere. Drummers are right on the border of somewhere… looks like they can’t come in here.
Have any of you bass dudes tried Lakland basses? I think they sound amazing, but then again I don’t really know the ins and outs of the low spectrum.
Side note: Has anyone played the new Fender American Standard axes? Thoughts?
Haven’t played either, but I’ve heard Laklands referred to as the “ultimate Fender-style basses.” I’ve been wanting ot get my hands on one, but…they’re not in regular shops, and I play lefty to boot.
