SRK Front Page, and the Community's Lack of Knowledge

Just for arguments sake, is this really the mentality of just new players? I hear top old school players bitch all the time on streams that my character got nerfed so and so, so this game sucks, etc. I think maybe they see the old guard doing this, and latch onto this. Shouldn’t the old school players just say, well, it’s about winning and comp, so I am going to pick the character with the current best tools to help me win and compete.

I just don’t think it’s all the new players fault. The old guard is contributing to this.

Also, somebody brought up football. For me, I am addicted to the NFL, so I can relate. If SRK divided up their coverage maybe in a similar fashion. Of course you have the pre-game hype, but you have the other shows that break down what is going on, like the Jaws/Hodge late night matchup show on ESPN late on Sat. nights.

And maybe SRK could had done a better job of highlighting the players from Japan, so more people knew the history of Fuudo and company.

Maybe SRK can take cues from like NBA TV/NFL network, with their mix of covering “hype” and the actual nuts and bolts of the sport.

Damn, this is a great topic.

Problem you bring up is this.

Vanilla SF comes out, I pick Ryu… God tier
by the time AE comes out, 2 years later, I have to relearn a different character because the character I was using was nerfed.

It’s nothing to do with the nerf itself. I wouldn’t mind some nerfs here or there, but many of the nerfs, like Honda, Blanka, and Ryu are just… really unnecessary nerfs. So now we have to learn a different character because rather than just buffing up the weaker characters, they buffed them up AND nerfed mine.

Capcom loves this shit. Wolverine was ridic. in every Marvel game until 2. Marvel 2 comes along, and after buffing everybody up, and nerfing characters like him, Chun, and Spiderman… They segregated the tiers more than any other MvC game before it. I’m ignoring the fact that 3 exists right now.

In France, Ken Bogard did a pretty good job doing commentary (youtube and now eLive) on nearly every japanese arcade tournaments and players since the beginning of SFIV. So we all knew who Fuudo, Neurosis, Shiro, RF and many others were, as we were also interested in the Japan scene, and not only their international players…

So it’s pretty much possible, but someone has to put the effort to do it.

At least, those doing the commentary (Shadaloo, EVO) should at least have a better knowledge of the japan scene, that was often pretty embarassing.

I see what you are saying, but… Look what happened to Guy from Alpha1 to Alpha2. Look what happened to Sean from 2nd Impact to 3rd Strike. Look what happened to to wolverine from MVC1 to MVC2 (like you said). I am pretty sure tiers shifted during the SF2 series of updates.

Plus when you are saying people have to learn some new stuff when something changes. So are people just mad because they have to learn something new or adapt their strats? How about the people who were using the low tier dudes.

People adapted back then, correct? Maybe people were mad as hell back then, but there were no streams and message boards to bitch on.

Please note that I am not against patching and updating. PC games do this all the time, and I am fine with it. I just have to adapt. It is fine for fighting games (but not to frequently though).

I just want to point out it’s not just the “new” players that are doing all the complaining/whining. Some old school guys complain plenty about so and so is overpowered, why can’t my character win this matchup, and stuff like that.

Of course, Guile was god in WW, then Bison in CE, then Blanka in HF, then uhh… New Challengers didn’t exist, then a pretty decent top in Super Turbo

Ok, I’m just going to sum this up really quick… into a perspective I haven’t seen anybody else touch yet… Why? because who insults themselves?

Back in the days of WW - ST, and into the early Alpha days and such, the scene wasn’t competitive to the degree it is today.
People didn’t mind putting a few hours here or there into a character. The point of the game was to get some pizza with your friends and play a few rounds with the change from lunch. A few tournaments here and there. Today, the scene is huge, and smaller things are noted as we figure more things out about games.
The RISK of having your character nerfed wasn’t as great as it is today. Back in the day, you spent your practice time at the arcade, just playing the game for a few hours. Now, I’m pretty sure your practice time is at least 2-5x that amount. By making your character essentially worthless from a competitive standpoint, your taking away these 1000+ hours that somebody puts into the game. I used to play for fun, then I got competitive in MvC2… Now, I’m back to playing for fun, and I don’t REALLY care about the nerfs, but they do piss me off.

The point: People who are playing from a competitive level have a right to complain. I’d complain too if I spent 1000+ hours in a year on a game, just to have 50% of that knowledge be swept. Imagine leaving college and being told “Half of what you know about Computer Programming doesn’t work anymore. C++ and Java don’t exist in 2012”

There’s also a lot of “sifting” you need to do. A lot of people do complain about balance patches and shit… How many of them actually compete. If they don’t compete, they’re just backseat activists, in the same way that some random dude posting up about politics on a video game forum is. They vent… that’s all, and you have to just take it with a grain of salt. Nobody forces them to buy the games, nobody forces them to even play it… and after all the complaining is done, chances are, they’ll still play it.

The problem, again isn’t the nerfs. Bison’s wakeup crusher needed to be fixed. Wolverine’s touch of death from XSF needed to be fixed.
Ryu’s c.mk didn’t ever need fixing in 4.

People like to be entertained and I guess they feel if the SRK content goes to deep and over people heads it’ll drive down the amount of people who are viewing the site

So what you’re saying… is that SRK is turning into Capcom?

Basically.

skimmed most of this, but I do agree front page is pretty “casual” more than “serious”. There are times I don’t even scroll into most of the stuff because it’s just another combo video of a character I don’t use or a character i’ve seen 8,000 times. Or it’s a video of info we’ve known for awhile but clearly goes unnoticed because the front page is too tangled with. Speaking of which, Sasaki. Japanese Cody player. I’ve seen some of his vids from super and some of his AE stuff. Why is he only getting front page exposure? (and a small one at that) There’s still a lot of characters who haven’t even had their front page shine or debut. Same goes for Marvel 3. I was interested in showing some Trish setups that I found and just make a small combo video out of it. I suggest it in “that secret place” and Keits is like “Yea but Trish combos are boring”. Who cares if it’s boring. If it benefits Trish players then it can be boring as fuck. Things don’t have to always be flashy to appeal to everyone. Which is a glaring problem with most of the new players trying to become “serious” in the current fighters.

The front page really needs tabs of some sort to weed out and separate a lot of casual/serious news. Or at least to keep things organized so I don’t have to keep going back 8 pages to find a interesting post because it was pushed down by a bunch of other useless or not as interesting posts. It’s actually not even about weeding out the front page as it’s more of just being fucking organized for everyone regardless if they’re casual or not.

As for the forums…they just need help in certain spots. Obviously the new game. There’s a lack of modding for sure in the character discussion areas. TekkenZaibatsu seems to do that right by having either top players of said character or a few people who actually do support and contribute towards said forum to mod.

It really disgusts me when I see topics on the front page, like some guy beat boxing some SF song, but we can’t get a front page topic on how bad the net code is for ssf4\mvc3 and bash capcom for releasing that garbage.

is some guy beat boxing actually MORE important than the entire community receiving a quality net code?

things that ACTUALLY concern the community are extremely over looked by that garbage we see sometimes on the front page.

Sounds like politics

Yea that’s half the reason why I can’t even listen to Guile’s theme anymore because of that meme. I loved that theme and now just have no desire to listen to it due to the meme.

But this is why it would be great if tabs were implemented on the front page so we can have a section for news/funny shit/combo videos/tutorials/interviews/etc. That way no one is really missing anything and no one’s having to go through endless pages to find something.

Gonna ask once more because my post was long… does anyone have any thoughts on where my Domination 101-style article, which I am finishing up right now, should be posted? It’s pretty much down to this board or the AE board. The article applies to all fighting games, but all of the stories and tactics/characters discussed are from AE.

seriously capcom patching because the scrubs cry is seriously getting annoying. there are certain instances where some characters needed some tweaking but like someone said ryus cr.mk was something that was only nerfed because the scrubs kept on crying about ryu non stop and capcom listened to them

in the up coming patch yun will probably be nerfed to shit cuz of the scrub tears when the community never got he time to fully learn and get used to playing against him and before “anti yun” techniques became second nature. and whats sad is it doesnt end here because the scrubs will bitch and moan about who ever is now top tier jus like they did with ryu sagat rufus in vanilla, abel guile and honda in super and now yun yang and fei long in ae( actually now its jus yun and fei since yang didnt have a strong showing at evo…)

hopefully the mvc3 team doesnt go down this route and patch everything the scrubs cry for, let the game run its natural coarse and let the players become refined and used to everything in the damn game please

Wow that sucks. I remember when SRK RARELY updated their front page, but when they did, it was something big.

Actually, I remember when SRK had STEEL BLUE lol. Those were good days.

I think it would be interesting if Keits or someone higher up would comment about this.

OR, if SRK won’t do this, maybe somebody can dedicate a website to the hardcore SRK enthusiast with stuff on the front page like HAV had mentioned.

I think a lot of the problem is that there’s only so many people able to actually update the front page with a mixture of things. Would be nice to have others besides Keits doing everything or trying to keep up with everything.

At least once I saw them add Keits as a front page guy, I expected to see more to follow.

SRK should emulate Team Liquid, a starcraft pro gaming site. They have extensive coverage of the foreign and American pro scenes, detailed previews and reviews of major tournaments, and then a smaller “highlights” section that mentions things that some people might find interesting. For an example, if the TL staff covered Evo they would have a detailed write up of Fuudo, Poongko, Shiro, etc etc detailing their past achievements and their history in the fighting game scene, after the tournament there would be a strategic analysis of the games and when/why certain players lost. If Shoryuken covered a Starcraft tournment they would post the results then have five front page articles about “Hilarious bronze SC2 match between 2 zerglings”.

Damn, thanks for the info. I had never heard of Team Liquid. I checked it out. It is a DAMN good site. SRK should emulate them somehow.

look how many posts this thread has

Let’s get real here- If there’s something you can’t really expect from the front page is to present objective journalism because of the obvious conflict of interests.
Capcom, Namco etc. bring exclusive content to EVO and other SRK events= SRK won’t bash them nor their shitty net codes on the front page. You don’t bite the hand that feeds you.

What you CAN demand them to do is to have more important content alongside the usual PR stuff.
