My reasoning for the EV’s I listed is as follows you can use w/e set you want obviously the HP will give him a little bit of a boost on the physically side but I like having him be a better special wall. It is w/e your team needs just something to consider.
4 SpA Rotom-W Hydro Pump vs. 0 HP / 252 SpD Assault Vest Conkeldurr: 85-102 (24.2 - 29%) – 99.3% chance to 4HKO
4 SpA Rotom-W Hydro Pump vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Conkeldurr: 118-139 (28.5 - 33.5%) – 0.3% chance to 3HKO
so basically he’s 4HKO’d either way by rotom’s hydro pump, which you can ignore because rotom-w is going to get drain punched a few times (so it’s closer to being a 5HKO)
running max HP also boosts his defense, which is going to be where he’s taking the most hits from thanks to assault vest, while he will recover less life per drain punch, the fact he can tank more hits on both sides is definitely something to consider
my spread is 414 HP / 226 Def / 250 SpD (this is including AV)
your spread is 351 HP / 228 Def / 342 SpD (obviously including AV)
the big HP difference makes up for the lower defenses, especially when it’s going to take physical attacks way better, for example
252 Atk Tough Claws Mega Charizard X Dragon Claw vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Conkeldurr: 178-210 (42.9 - 50.7%) – 2.3% chance to 2HKO
252 Atk Tough Claws Mega Charizard X Dragon Claw vs. 0 HP / 8 Def Conkeldurr: 177-208 (50.4 - 59.2%) – guaranteed 2HKO
while yes, obviously both are 2HKO’d if Zard X uses flare blitz but there are quite a few scenarios in which zard X would either die from recoil or mach punch so having the chance to survive this 2HKO is important
252 Atk Adaptability Mega Lucario Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Conkeldurr: 296-350 (71.4 - 84.5%) – guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252 Atk Adaptability Mega Lucario Close Combat vs. 0 HP / 8 Def Conkeldurr: 294-346 (83.7 - 98.5%) – 31.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
252+ Atk Conkeldurr Mach Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mega Lucario: 168-200 (59.7 - 71.1%) – guaranteed 2HKO
removing even the smallest chance of mega lucario to ruin your life is important, it can revenge kill a weakend mega lucario
I will just leave it at this. The special defense set makes him better at what the AV set is primarily used for and quite a bit better at that. While I supposed the HP lets him throw up a prayer against things he isn’t primarily used for countering. Yes those situations can happen, but you are building a team so they hopefully don’t have to. Again it can come down to what you need, but he isn’t used for stopping Mega zard and lucario unless luc is of course weak which in this case any set revenges it.
i’ve been looking at calcs between 252 HP / 4 SpD and 0 HP / 248 SpD and none of them really matter, he gets 2 shotted by real strong special attacks anyways and the weaker ones are only like a 3% difference
he lacks reliable recovery so the HP doesn’t make a difference, it’s up to preference i guess, i run my AV conk with wish support on the team (and another support option that i refuse to reveal)
conk isn’t a special wall, he’s a tank, he can take hits and dish them back, but he is not going to do well at absorbing special hits for example
252 SpA Mega Charizard Y Fire Blast vs. 0 HP / 248 SpD Assault Vest Conkeldurr in Sun: 217-256 (61.8 - 72.9%) – guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Mega Charizard Y Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Conkeldurr in Sun: 297-351 (71.7 - 84.7%) – guaranteed 2HKO
he can’t take strong special attacks at all, but he’s good for weaker ones
blissey on the other hand is still the best special wall in the game, but with the metagame being so physical, it is actually a liability at this point (especially with all these megas going around)
As far as conkeldurr is concerned why not something mixed? 40HP and 212SpDef. Drain punch works better with lower HP but that’s not to say don’t invest at all. I won’t elaborate because the spread really depends on your needs and the split of HP and SpDef above works well for me.
I don’t see any scenario where I can use Blissey ever again. Blissey becomes a serious detriment to teams late game due its inability to kill anything, and the advent of solid mixed attackers makes it even more undesirable. Then again, I’ve never been a fan of pure walls, tanks rule!
mostly because a lot of the attacks he will be facing will be of the physical kind, maximizing your HP allows you to take both attack types pretty equally, he’ll take weak hits no problem but strong ones no problem
also, a lot of psychic types carry psyshock so making their job easier is also not a good thing
there are only 2 leech seeders you should worry about, you beat ferrothorn with knock off and drain punch and mega venusaur walls the ever living shit out of you anyways
the differences between 252 HP / 4 SpD and 0 HP / 248 SpD are minimal when talking about taking special attacks that it really doesn’t matter, the more HP allows him to take physical attacks a lot better though, which is super important when things like landorus-T love switching into him
I think Blissey has a place on stall teams still, but not as a bulky Poke on a balanced team. Also need to be wary about SpA users that can pick up Psyshock and body her shit.
(As someone who plays stall or at least more defensive teams like 90% of the time, I’ve oddly never been that enamored of St. Fatass, a.k.a Blissey. Not that I hate her or anything. It’s just that she’s more and more set-up bait, though she has uses still–even if it’s as Eviolite Chansey–namely due to getting the still relatively rare Wish. Kinda amusing how Sableye, of all things, kicks her ass now though.)
Wow, the first opponent in the Pokebattle video was either a tremendous idiot or a troll; perhaps he (?) was both since there’s not often that much of a difference. Regardless, the models and set-up for that are quite nice. Too bad it likely wouldn’t run well on my dinosaur of a desktop even with the understandable lack of attack animations.
In the more immediate sense, @Inferoman, thanks for the PM and ideas. Too bad the Sunny Day teams I want to make still run into Sunny Day’s eternal problem of either having too many Ground weak pokemon or, death forbid, too many Rock weak pokemon. So I’ll hold off on that for now and just try to focus on bettering the other team I made for the tournament, as much as I still want to use Trevenant.
Also, Conkledurr still looks stupid. Thankfully said tournament team has several ways of taking it down–none of which will probably work since my luck is atrocious.
Sorry about not getting back to you sooner. Yesterday fucking sucked in general.
I was expecting to be busier until later tonight, but after 8:30 P.M. PST I should be around. Otherwise, I should be around after 7:00 P.M. PST for the rest of the week if that works for you.
Regardless of whether or not you reply to this by, I’ll probably PM when I get home. This reminds me that I still “need” to PM phantasy my team, though I’m still fine-tuning even though it would probably be better to just playtest it and do that. Shrug.
