Yeah, that distinctive curve is a result of the lamination, the hard edge and the soft inner core cooling at different rates. The black stuff is the clay falling off of the blade. It’s put on there to make sure that the cutting edge thoroughly hardens, but the core heats more slowly and remains malleable.
