Soul Calibur 5 Official Discussion

I am pretty sure I read from capcom that sfiv takes place after sf2 and before sf3, it’s not a retcon. Makoto and Ibuki and others are in because of fan request.

SF4 takes place between SF2 and SF3. It’s not a retcon. They just changed the setting to be in between those two games to appeal to the most people. MK9 is a retcon.

SC5 is going to be fine. The fanboys for a particular character may be upset at first, but as long as the game is solid and fun to play, they’ll be fine. It’s not going to be like SF3 where they got rid of all of the characters that people grew up playing with in SF2 except for Ken and Ryu. Half of the current roster will be returning which is alot of characters. Plus who knows what will happen with DLC/updates.

Plus the progression in time is something that the game needed to freshen things up and get people who currently don’t play Calibur to give it another look.

SFIV takes place before III. I believe Capcom’s made statements confirming such. The only change in the “timeline” is that they’ve dropped the official birthdates/years, something they’ve done ever since SFIII.

As for Soul Cal V, they can simply do what Tekken 3 did, new characters, old movesets.

SF4 is rather interesting in the timeline thing if you pay attention to it.

The whole SIN arc and Seth thing takes place between SF2 and SF3. A lot of the other characters “story” seem to take place when and where ever the fuck it wants to like Honda having pretty much his SF2 story, Rose or Guy having their SFA story, and Ibuki and Makoto with their SF3 or not too soon before SF3 stories. Capcom just wanted to put favorites in and story wasn’t going to get in their way.

At the end of the day, story is of secondary importance in a fighting game.

The Tekken 3 replacement characters were somewhere between brand new and reskins. Hwoarang in particular was very different to Baek. Xiaoyu and Eddie did actually bring completely new fighting styles to the series.

SCV looks like it might doing the same sort of thing looking at it so far. It’d be more interesting and meaningful than simply reskinning the old cast. There’s still a few I’d hope they’d hold on to though like Hwang, Setsuka, Raphael and Hilde but if not I’ll just look at the new ones.

Seen that video a couple days ago and my first thought was “About time”. It should add a big dynamic to a already interesting defensive/offensive system.

I’m a little bit worried about strings being JG’d with no way to punish them since you’d be at big -frames if you stopped the string early.

I’m hoping that it’s impossible to confirm the success of the JG in time to actually make use of the +frames you get. This way, you’d have to input G and then something immediately in order to get any reward from attempting it. If this were the case, then early and late JG attempts are risky.

However, in a string all you’d have to do is hit G at the timing for next attack and it’ll cover all options – no other attack will come anywhere near that time, so inputting G at the timing of the next attack in the string and then attacking won’t have any risk. This was possible in SCIV, where if you did the same thing, you’d attack them from your advantage if they stopped a string, but if they completed it you end up inputting your attack during the blockstun (does nothing) – this strategy will be much stronger in SC5.

HOWEVER that was only really useful for strings that could be canceled really late. If they brought back all the cancels from the previous games in SC5, things may come out balanced.

Final Fantasy characters in my Soul Calibur? I think I might puke.

I think it would be a good thing just like IV bought in the Star Wars fans Final Fantasy might give it the boost in japan it needs.

Say what you will about FFXIII but Lightning would probably kick copious amounts of ass in a proper fighting game. Not even a huge fan but I see lots of potential for a moveset with her.

idk I guess it would all depend on who they decide to throw in there. Characters from FF1-6 I’m cool with. Just don’t want to see something like Cloud vs Sephiroth.

I’d take FF7 Cid, Tifa or FF9 Amarant, Steiner, Zidane (I only played FF7 8 and 9 :()
Special mention to Citan from Xenogears

If they were to add someone from FF, I’d rather they gave us Firion. He is a proper weapon master, after all.

Ya know why not do Tales characters so the ToX series can get some more exposure, the characters make sense, and it’s a win/win for Namco.

I would buy a dozen copies if Namco put Kratos Aurion in a Soul Calibur game.

Barbatos Goetia, Van, or Dhaos would be awesome for some villains.
