Soul Calibur 5 Official Discussion

I mained Setsuka since 3. She can be tough to use but mastered she is super good. Not many really played Setsuka due to her high difficulty bar. This would probably be the case with this Alpha guy IDK.

As for competitive play, this game series didn’t have much of a competitive play in general. It was far and between and online play reflects this. The skill lvl isn’t that great but it get better eventually.

You referring to Cervantes’? Yeah it is pretty damn good, unblockable that starts incredibly fast. You can avoid it by holding G and ducking during the cinematic though. It also only does 50 damage raw. It’s best as a whiff punish or a wallsplat/ring out imo.

Are there any other unblockable ones? I haven’t really encountered any, most seem to just guard crush.

Fixed

Astaroth’s is a grab, so it’s also unblockable. It can be crouched or jumped, but only before the flash.

well nice trick…
after completely trolling my way to a 3-0 win with yoshi the opponent disconnects at the last second leaving me in complete no man land until the xbox disconnects me from live
well played…
but thats the last time i fall for that one

I want to play Elysium, but I’m too new/bad at the game to learn 8 characters just to make that shit work. Why did they have to make such an awesomely designed character with one of the coolest CEs in the game and then make her a mimic :(.

I think I’m going to lay off Hilde and Z.W.E.I. Until I get better. I’m starting to get into the faster characters like Yoshimitsu and Devil Jin. This is a really lame question but how do you figure out which moves are your BnB combos and what are your specials? My problem is I’m too accustomed to having normal attacks and specials that you cancel from normals. I apologize for my stupidity.

Your “specials” are usually moves that have some sort of unique property. Ex: Pat’s Justice Drive.(Knockdown) and Stigma (Auto-GI that blocks all mids).
Your normals are moves that don’t really have a special property besides fast start-up/good range/etc.
Moves you use in your bnbs should seamlessly flow together for good damage and the first move should always be something that is relatively safe on block.

Ex.

Pat’s Justice Stab (-2 on block and causes crumple knockdown) -> Spin Kick (OTG’s and launches into the air) -> Justice Drive (strong damage attack that has a good Ring Out capability).

Sort of don’t exist. Really, you just have “moves”.

To find which are your bread and butter… well you can go to 8WR for some good info there, basically find moves for each situation and if can do any followups/tech traps off of them for more damage. Also remember to use Horizontal moves, a lot of people online right now are just BBBBB, I am getting far too many sidestep punishes that I shouldn’t.

Also as silly as it sounds and completely obvious you want to condition
most horizontal moves (the faster ones are highs)
so a nice tid bit is to condition the opponent by weaving and sidestepping/quick step in the neutral game in this moment when he trys to attack you with highs use a move that tech crouchs to cruch his attempt and punish him
the majority of horizontal lows are slow in this game
but online is lol
still alot of them are block able on reaction

Aeon is super fun in this game. While they took out his Crawling stance (I can’t troll people as easily anymore) and his flip kicks (fun to look at), he now has vertical attacks that don’t suck and some really nasty low moves. I’ve played him since SC2 and for the first time he’s a legitimate blast to play. Haven’t even touched any of the other characters yet outside of story mode.

While his BBB string is super unsafe and easy to get out of, nobody ukemi rolls online so I get a free 3 hits every time I knock someone down

I also highly recommend the official guide (from Futurepress, I think? Too lazy to check). It’s super legit and has tons of info on basically everything in the game. Not just offline material, but tons of high level esports stuff like okizeme and good punishes/pokes for every character and other cool things.

Looks like Nightmare can GI super Sigfried’s and Yoshi’s supers on reaction but only if he’s not at point blank range.

This has been THE INVINCIBLE SWORDSMAN saying:

Ok. I’m starting to wamr up to APat now. Her jfs seem much easier now. And she can do some hella damage with just her BEs.

I had the biggest LOL moment when during Quick Match mode, one of my opponents was DIEGO UMEHAREZ!!!

Too bad he’s so weak. I got 2 perfects on him haha.

Is the computer in training mode actually good at countering when you set it to the mode? I’m trying to find out what moves are safe or not, but no use in using it if it counter attacks way later than a human would react to it.

It reacts as soon as possible I’m pretty sure.

Thanks. I hope so. Would it be a dumb idea idea if they put an option in there to also counter you as fast as possible off of startup? Maybe I am thinking too much, but being countered during startup is just as big a factor as being countered after the block right? I’m guessing that would only mean AA type moves would be safe, but I’d still like to know something like that just in case. I am correct in saying that countering on block isn’t the only scenario right? I really want to practice everyone one that I can.

I don’t know how you would do that, but you can fiddle around. The training mode is pretty good in this game.

So Soul Calibur 5 is a fun game. However, the only character I like playing is Devil Jin. Probably because hes the only one I really understand.I tried learning a “real” character but it just doesnt feel right. Plus I enjoy getting around these long ass weapons, having great punishers but not the best range, and the rush of applying pressure when you finally get in. Sucks that hes tourney banned, but I’ve been putting in work with him and I’ll continue playing him only. If I go to a tourney, guess I’ll be watching and picking him in casuals. I really dont see why this character is simply banned by default. Hes the same as every other unlockable character…Algol and others should be banned too if they’re gonna be like that…>.>

Except you have to make a CaS and therefore there is no selectable character for him.

From my understanding, the idea behind the ban right now is that it would simply be too difficult to come up with a standard Devil Jin build, put it on each console, and ensure that all of the Devil Jin’s are correct. To make things worse, you would actually need two Devil Jin’s on each console in case somebody ever wanted to play a mirror match, and you’d have to make sure that both Devil Jin’s remain unaltered throughout the tournament. While I think it’s lame that he’s banned, banning him for logistical reasons like that is perfectly understandable. Namco really should release a Harada or Devil Jin character that people can use for tournaments.

Speaking of CaS, why the heck isn’t Dampierre editable? I can make entire characters off of his style, and I can make full costumes for Algol, but I can’t even edit Dampierre. I wanted to give him a dress like he was in the middle of an elaborate con; turns out I can only take his picture. So disappointing.
