So...we're just not gonna talk about Sean? (Sean guide)

I was planning to read this all in one sitting, then I realized how long it was xO
Props for the info though! I’ll definitely be checking here every so often.

Thanks for checking in barzaad9564, I’ll add a few comments.

I really do agree with this, obviously I wouldn’t have been maining Sean for years and wouldn’t have written this guide if I didn’t think winning with Sean was possible. But it’s hard, and new Sean players need to know that. Sean may not have been designed as a joke character like Dan, but Dan has better matchups, and is easier to win with. No hate, just truth. What you said though is essential, you have to know that you can still win with Sean, and I hope you do. The main reason I said not to use him as an excuse was to prevent people from “hiding behind” a low tier character, something I got accused of more times that I care to reflect on. As I mentioned, when you win with Sean, then where does your opponent go to hide?

I dunno man, I just ain’t feeling Pittsburgh Sean, but it’s up to you really.

You can combo off his crossup, so it’s not useless, just not as good as Ken’s and kinda hard to space/time.

I’m sure you meant mp>hk and it’s actually a good idea after an anti-air parry, but as I mentioned often you can get better damage by hitting cl.hp or cl.hk which have the same startup frames as cl.mp and cause different results (as far as resets/stun etc.) so really you can pick which one you want. Aku mentioned that you can’t cancel off the target combo except on Makoto, which is correct, but you CAN cancel off the cl.mp which is what I’m sure you meant.

Selecting the best super for your opponent is definitly a good idea, I was actually going to leave this in when I do specific matchups. I for example feel like SA2 is best for opponents who are always in your face like Yun, Yang and Makoto. But for characters who play safer, SA1 or 3 is a good option. (Though I use SA2 in all matchups, but that’s just me.) You can block Hyper Tornado standing though, so I’m not sure where the “taunt+SA3 is basically unblockable” came from, unless it was opponents who think you have to block it low and whiffed a parry.

Thanks for commenting, for now I’ll get back to working on those matchups.

You’re consistently a productive addition to any thread. I give valid counterpoints with factual evidence. I get ‘shut up idiot’. Classic. Thank you for proving my point for me better than I ever could.

I contribute by playing the game.

you wrote a ridiculous amount spectre. you’re insane.
i would suggest using spoiler tags and/or hitting enter a few more times to separate paragraphs. some of those topics are really just a complete wall of text.

sa3 is the shit. always go hyper tornado.

I finally got back into this last night, and I’m really glad I did. My favorite parts are that you’ve analyzed every normal that he has (that’s something that it took me a while to realize - that just because I could do pretty well with mostly just 3-4 normals doesn’t mean I shouldn’t explore the others because even if a move has limited use, those are still uses that can add up to a lot more wins if you’re smart… and also the section where you talk about different situations/strategic approaches (what to do if he’s turtling, what are you options at the beginning of the round) - that’s great stuff to think about. Thanks again.

you quoted me before the YT vid was appended here: http://youtu.be/Bjlx2g6E6XQ

Yea, I played on GGPO since like 08-09 maybe? lately I’ve been playing on supercade. Yea I remember played 1 or 2 guys that were pretty proficient with sean, did you go by the same name as here on the forum? I’m always SpoR.

PS- What exactly is negative edge for lp roll tick throw? I probably do this without knowing what it is lol. (PS when people start catching on to the lp roll tick throw, add another c.lp it works great.)

I’ve always gone by the same name everywhere.
Negative edge is when you hold down a button after doing a move, and then release it to do the next move. A negative edge cr.lp~lp sean roll would be input like this: cr.lp (hold lp) qcb (release lp) it has to be done very quickly but can be done with any move if the move you’re cancelling into can be performed with the same button, for example Sean’s close mp~mp dragon smash. Negative edge is also one of the reasons people “piano” their buttons, quickly hitting all 3 punches, or kicks, allows for not 3 but 6 actual inputs, one for the button being pressed and one for it being released, of course in a situation where lp, mp and hp yeild different moves, such as with a Sean roll, you wouldn’t want to do this.

In your video that Ken player simply never punished a tornado kick, I’m fine with killing people using that move, if it’s working, and I have many times, but what would you have done if he was punishing correctly? Your offense with Sean is very good, if you worked on your parries, you’d be quite formidable. Just a tip, not sure if you know this but Ken’s EX tatsumaki is safe, there was one point where you hit him with Shoryu-Cannon after he did it, which is about the only thing that will work, and only because he put another move on the screen. Usually after I block or get hit by an EX tatsu, I’ll parry, or if I’m feeling myself, super because the Ken player thinks I don’t know he has frame advantage. Regular tatsumakis are punishable tho. I’ll get around to doing the Ken matchup eventually, right now I’m still working on Makoto.

And Poe, thanks for checking back in. Yeah, thinking about that kind of stuff is what makes you a better player no matter which character you use. Even though Sean has some normals that I really hate, every now and then I still find a use for them.

Spectre General , can I add your posts about Sean on the 3s empire wiki?

Well, I’m all about the information being out there. Do you mind if I ask where the current information came from? I’m not claiming to be a real expert, but I have seriously mained this character for a very long time. Hopefully I’m not insulting anyone by saying this but some of the info on the wiki now is for the most part heinously wrong, or just weird. For example:

lol wut?
I’m fine with you putting it out there but there’s one or two things I want to know and/or talk about first. Do you run that wiki? It might be presumptuous of me but I think maybe the info currently there should be replaced, rather than added on to. I appreciate the offer, let’s talk further about it in PMs.

This was a good read. I’ve been playing Sean for a really long time now, and I think it’s just love for the character that get ya though

This guide is pretty bad…

Dang Spectre, wish you better luck next time cause that game against Rom was utterly awful. Stop wakeuping throwing and trying to throw so much overall : |

It had been a pretty long time since I’ve played a serious Yang player, I even told him that before the match. I don’t remember getting destroyed quite as bad as some of the other people ROM beat, but that match is still a blur. I ended up 17th overall in that tournament out of 47. I’m not mad about that.
