SF3 was ANOTHER fighting game and it was released in an era where consumers wanted to see novel things. SF3 wasn’t novel because:
A) It was 2d. Only hardcores or semi-hardcores would like SF3.
B) ANOTHER Fighting game. If you released a 2D fighter in that era of video games, people would get bored of it because it’s “been there, done that” to them.
C) Marketing. All the SF2 people I knew who were casuals didn’t even know SF3 was out. I don’t think this explanation of mine doesn’t really hold much weight though.
I don’t think complexity had anything to do with it. Newbs will generally play other newbs. Casual gamers generally pick up a game, then leave it behind after some time. They won’t even bother to explore the game.
Seriously I think that this thread don’t have any sense at all…they are lovers, haters, fanboys…everyone has a diffrent opinion but I just want to say that 3rd Strike is my favorite game and I’m proud of it.
-It came out when arcades started their rapid decline.
-The game initially had no returning characters, alienating those who grew up with them. It wasn’t going to even have Ryu or Ken initially, and it would have ceased to be a SF game at that point.
-It was a 2D fighter that came out during the 3D craze.
-The game had zero exposure outside of tournaments and nobody really knew/cared about it until EVO 2K4.
-After Alpha 3, it was all starting to get old.
2I is a fun game but it’s hella unbalanced. 3s is actually the most balanced iteration of SF3. I feel like if NG and 2I hadn’t had such abusable characters, they could have at least been competitive, but as it stands, characters like Ibuki and Akuma all but break the game. No one in 3s is abusable to the point that they are in NG and 2I.
But that said, Capcom went way overboard with the nerfs from 2I to 3s.
SF3 was a failure because…let’s see…the took out honda, blanka, guile, zangief, dhalsim, bison, sagat, vega, balrog, cammy, fei long, t. hawk and dee jay. that will just about do it.
Oh yeah, that’s why you can show any random person on the street a picture of…say Remy, Ono, Urien, Elena, really anyone from that game, and they’ll know who it is, right? Yeah.
Twilight’s only popular with retarded tweens. I’m talking about the entire public in general. I’m sorry but you grow up with a certain cast of characters, you’re gonna be pretty pissed when they toss them all in the garbage. What do you think people’s reactions would be if for the latest Mario game there was no Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Peach, etc. but all new fucking people? I’m not saying adding new characters is bad, but for Christ’s sakes, give a little thought to the fans of the game who grew up with the characters they love.
