Q was just some lifeless blob who you couldn’t relate to, his moves were boring too. Twelve is just some guy in a trenchcoat and his moves were the most boring in SF history. There was nothing quirky or interesting about either of them.
Ibuki, Dudely, Makoto, Elena, Alex, and Gill were all fully fleshed out characters who were interesting. Unique playstyles too. But don’t take my word, just ask the fans, do you see Twelve in SSF4?
Don’t lie, MK was a pretty serious fighter with a dark story, least before the 3d games to some degree where some goofy shit got added. I’m just saying, Capcom needs to not be afraid to go to a darker more gritty direction. I mean it’s fucking STREET FIGHTER, guys fighting in the streets. That shit needs to be more hardcore, not fucking schoolgirls giving panty shots and flying Native Americans and other goofy shit.
This is what I always though. Quite awhile ago I watched a documentary on the history of fighting games and it basically confirmed this to be the case in regards to the decreased interest from the public in the Street Fighter franchise. SF3 came out at a time where the popularity of arcades and 2D fighters were dwindling, and it didn’t have the familiar faces the other Street Fighter games had initially. Notice I said nothing about how the game actually plays.
I’ll never understand why Third Strike players and Third Strike haters go at each others’ throats like Republicans and Democrats, but I can tell you that SF3 not doing that well commercially really didn’t have that much to do with the gameplay. The market for the game at the time was limited, and was part of the reason Capcom didn’t release a new Street Fighter game for so long (remember how Ono had to BEG Capcom to let him produce another Street Fighter title?). It also took a full two years for a Dreamcast port of the game to be released, and as far as I know it wasn’t arcade perfect either, a lot of changes were made.
I see a lot of greatest game ever/worst game ever arguments in the thread, but it doesn’t really have anything to do with why the game failed. Anyone that does a little bit of research into the matter can see it was because of factors other than gameplay.
Babalities were stupid, I agree, same for all the palette swapping. Still, the game had a generally dark atmosphere. SF2 was more serious compared to the Alpha series, when the anime shit fagged it all up. I mean come on, Sakura and Dan?
