The problem that most have with Elf is not that he is a grappler but his vortex/guessing game. I personally like him and would be a little sad if he was removed but I can understand why others despise him :-(.
Future installments…yeah Viper will definitely return, she is a cool popular design that has a lot of fans. El Fuerte may not. I can see Juri returning too she has a good fan base.
I’m still not sure how that makes El Fuerte a grappler. He isn’t.
I could see Karin getting in the game just because she’s so popular in Japan (and my favorite SF character ever XD). I wonder if they really would put SFxTK characters in. I could see Rolento, but I’m not sure about anyone else…
I don’t know why I just thought of this dumbshit, nor do I really understand why I couldn’t just keep it to myself but…
my idea for 2013 is simple… Feng Shui Engines. Feng Shui Engine Ultra3 for everybody!! All with different effects, like maybe blanka gets electric effects on all his attacks, sakura gets sunburnt, dan gets his self destruct grab… that kind of shit… Abel sings the entire happy birthday song… i dunno
Almost true RNG-style gameplay, most characters have preferred mixups for specific situations and setups. Fuerte is simply get a knockdown, run, and press 1 of 6 buttons to do an assortment of random things. If it was a specific setup, you could defend against it better by understanding the setup. For instance, Ibuki’s kunai may be very safe, but if you understand the setups you can intelligently deal with it.
Fuerte is an annoying character with a really terribly stupid design. You’d think with how terrible his design is they would have least made him a female character to appeal to some fetish like Sakura. Instead he’s a little jumping bean that looks dumb executing any of his moves paired with his rage-inducing voice acting.
Long time SF player here. Grew up with world warrior, played Ken forever, messed with Dictator and settled on everyone’s most disliked jumping bean. An Elf mainer for life.
To you and all the other haters: Care to qualify what makes his design is terrible/stupid? In what ways, quantifiably? After two years of Elf, I’m starting to realise the genius behind his design and where he hints in relation to shotos. I hope he never goes…
i agree with you too…people hates elfuerte because they are 80s gay,
80s gay means people who had imprisoned theirself with made up rules where only basic fundamentals and footsies are legit.
and these old folks flamboyant scrubs are too lazy to guess and totally pissed off if they got hit by any random moves/supers/ultra.
That’s what I’m saying. Tim Rogers over at Insert Credit wrote an article a while back about understanding the fundamentals of SF by observing and analysing a Ryu mirror match. In it he talked about zoning, offense, defense etc. Really interesting stuff.
The more out there characters on the SF roster, from Alpha/Zero to SFIII are experiments by Capcom designers to play with the system, to allow players a chance to alter the template and interface/engage with the game on altered terms. Some changes have been better/more successful than others but the most important thing to realise is that they were made by analysing game mechanics and understanding how they work on a deep level.
I love that the only way Elf can beat Shotos is by a high risk, reflex/read game of shutting down their zone. I lose a lot to SHotos and don’t care. I feel like I am playing in a crack in the game and become a better player by understanding where my chosen character and playstyle fit.
man…online community will be less boring if we had more people like you.
you see, even if people pick Chargers, you gonna face the same 80s template playstyle just like when you were 10years old, skipped class, sneak into video game arcade and enjoy ol’dull classic Ryu vs Guile slow approach-via-projectile-spam which end up with footsies war.
hello…this 2013, nobody wear bell bottom pants anymore.
If every new player were required to read that Rogers article and read the Sirlin book (you don’t even have to pay, you can read it for free on his blog) we’d have a much better online community.
I grew up on streetfighter and took a big break (life works like that sometimes, wasn’t really intentional) and dipped in every now and again. When first went online, saw youtube videos of matches and got my ass beat again and again I just couldn’t fathom how much play styles had evolved. I never thought I’d be able to step up let alone step in.
But after reading Sirlin, Rogers and Umehara I kind of reconfigured my attitude and expectations of the game. Thinking of FGs as “High speed, real-time reflex chess” helped me turn a corner ability wise…
Anyway, as an interesting aside, circumstances being what they are, my primary experience of SFIV is currently on the 3DS. The online community there is the worst. Lite mode cheats/abusers than even make it fun any more…
sirlin’s book…i just finished read that,
its not only covers street fighter but other rts game as well…starcraft, aoe, red alert etc
the only thing footsies-template-oriented player should keep in their mind is…
even if capcom replace elfuerte with grapplers or chargers (e.g: sf3rd like alex, remy or Q)
people still can play mix-up (coin tossin’, dice rollin’, and emo-trollin’ war) with these kind of character…
alex (my fav character in capcom universe) - flash chop (block) --> spiral ddt or ex-air stomp
q (bad ass tank and everybody’s most hated 3rd strike character) --> just mix it up like you play boxer Balrog
remy (charlie guile wannabe and abel’s compagnon de’pays) - if you know how to mix up with guile, you’ll have no problem with this french. facile’!
even shoto can mix up too…have you ever met ryu player who spam collar bone breaker and solar plexus?
