SNK really dropped the ball with the new sprites

Dude, you think Daraku Tenshi has good sprites? I like the Blitzkampf sprites (even though they’re a little stiff and need more frames of animation) and the AOF 3 sprites are decent enough. But Daraku Tenshi? Those are some really ugly sprites. Never mind the fact that the K-like character is wearing gay bondage, but the sprites look like they were based on some claymation shit. They remind me of the sprites in Doom if they were made by some really ugly female programmers.

You post this in the kof13 thread and you make a new thread just for it. Can someone say “Attention Whore”?

The Daraku Tenshi sprites weren’t ugly, wtf? They looked very realistic if anything, especially the characters’ faces. If SNK had done it in that style, it would have costed much less, took far less time, and we’d have a new fancy KOF with tons of characters. Everyone’s favs would be in, as opposed to chars like K’ and Kula not being there, and upsetting fans. We already saw how many people flat out refused to buy the game simply due to Mai not being in it(which I felt was silly and stupid, but what can you do really).

Daraku Tenshi has good animation but the sprites aren’t all that well-drawn. In fact, some of them look very poor (the game was rushed like mad)

Dr. B’s sprite is so sexy it makes Mai look like inside-out Marge Simpson.

kofxiii looks spectacular mods lock thread

Carlos was awesome at least, even if he barely had any moves…

Another troll thread.

Damn, I wish they could bring back the rep bar…

Best sprite work in a fighting game ever, bitch.

L O fucking L

Iran likes the new sprite designs.

Also, can people please stop being mad about Japanese games having Japanese cartoon designs? No really, is it literally possible for someone not to be mad that a game with an origin from Japan, would share character design with an art style of the same origin? I wonder.

You and some other kid…STFU.
Mai not being in KoF12 was not the failing factor.

While I am not happy with the direction they went with Ralph and Clark, overall I love the sprite-work and actually like how King in the game seems inspired by the Capcom sprite for her. SNK Takes more risks than Capcom and they definitely did with 12/13. They change character’s movesets and look and controls constantly and introduce some truly unique characters, big risks other companies just cannot get away with.

12 was crap but felt like a Beta, however I forgive it. I felt like a half finished game, where SNK wanted to make the best fighter possible but could not afford it so they gave us all a chance to Beta test it and make suggestions on the direction they were going while funding its development. Again; SNK taking a huge risk that other companies simply wouldn’t try.

If you are going to bitch about the sprites, take a good hard look behind it.

Oh, come on. Manga/anime design is as diverse as any other fictional design. Some of it is fairly, shall we say, conventional (Naruto, Kenichi, Fate Stay/Night), while other works feature a more outlandish look (One Piece, Air Gear). Think old-school Disney vs. Pixar, or The Simpsons vs. Drawn Together.

Most anime-inspired fighting games (which is to say, most 2D fighting games) lean towards the first category. Be it sparkly Shoujo style (Arcana Heart), classic action (SF/Fatal Fury/KOF), ninjas and samurai (Samurai Shodown/Last Blade/Sengoku Basara), sci-fi (Star Gladiator/Cyberbots) or all of the above (Guilty Gear/BlazBlue), the “streamlined” brand is the norm. (The one exception I can think of is Battle Fantasia.) Some may deride this style as generic, but I think it would be safe to say that few outright hate it.

In the case of XII/XIII, SNK decided to switch to category 2 (odd proportions, exaggerated size differences between characters, basically a more “alternative/avant garde anime” look). Of course, many genuinely appreciate this change, and I daresay that there are plenty of players so fed up with the old sprites that they would welcome anything new and different.

However, change is never without risk. I think that it is safe to say that many in the “vanilla flair” camp practically have to fight the vomit reflex whenever they look at most of the new sprites. I know I do.

It’s not merely a matter of They Changed It Now It Sucks, “Sacrilege!” or “I hate this weird art style.” It’s all of it at once, and twice as galling when you’re among the few who didn’t even have a problem with the old low-res sprites to begin with. :shake:

In the West, SNK/KOF has always taken flak for its “anime ***/metro-ish” look. I’d say those who oppose the new art despise the “odd-ness” or the “new-ness”, not the Japanese-ness.

are there any games with a combination ninjas & samurais/sci-fi theme i think that would be sweet

I really don’t get the ranting though. It’s the same sprites, they’re just zoomed out a whole lot (or possibly made smaller) so they don’t seem as detailed and dramatic as the ones in KOF12. There’s still as fluid as they were in the previous game.

are you guys even serious? do you realize wtf you guys are talking bout? how can people complain about kofs anime art style when it was sfa that first did it as a sf game. not to mention darkstalkers being one of the first games to do it. in case most of yall been living under a crack rock these last 25 years, kof was ALWAYS drwan way more realisticlty than all other 2d fighters. this only changed in xii, so thisn is officially the 2nd new kof game using anime style graphics, and i luv it. only a few female characters got weird faces like athena, but for the rest of it shit is uncomparable.

also lol at wanting aof3 or daraku sprites, shit was like the ugliest sprite work. in cae somebnody didnt notice, the art and sprites in aof3 look like shit, they animate really well though. motw had some good looking and animating sprites, but they was too small. every game has something, but nothing worth an entire thread over it.

Yep, and I’ll be damned if many of the XII/XIII sprites (Ryo/Robert/Terry/Andy/Shen Woo) do not resemble AOF3 sprites more than anything else…

Besides, did you even read what I wrote? Sure, classic KOF style is “realistic anime”, but it is still anime (IMO far more so than SF2 or even pre-Real Bout Special Fatal Fury). Nobody is complaining about “anime style”, we’re complaining about what we think is “ugly, weird, ‘unrealistic’, SFA Birdie-level anime style”…

^ Who said Birdie was ugly…

It’s cause he’s black isn’t it?

No. I’m from SRK.

Fuck your opinion too.
