They needed to make a reduced 6MB patch compared to the 50MB one.

I thought the patch was 500mb. The 6mb patch locks the online and directs you to download a free 500mb dlc. That’s at least what I heard.

Edit: fixed some auto-correct induced typos.
Right, it was 500MB. My mistake. I mixed up numbers trying to remember
I’m fine with either of these. I don’t think the third is a good idea, simply because the prior issue with people asking about the DLC date is still there, and it would distract them from more important matters.
Reasons to go ahead and make the new forum anyway:
Reasons to wait for the official one:
In light of the official forum details, waiting seems more appropriate, even if we are in a buzz to act on things right now.
If you really want to post in a place that is not SRK people could just start using the forum we already have on Dustloop.com more often, I guess.
Overall, I think starting a completely new forum for SG would be a huge mistake. It would split the players up and confuse new comers.
Sorry, new account. Just stopping by from Smashboards. I’d be up for helping creating a Forum so tournaments can be established around the area. I think the skullgirls community could really need one. I really think however, we should coordinate with Mike Z.
BrandX, thanks for all the respect you gave us in smashboards. I wouldn’t be checking SRK if it wasn’t for ya.
M$ has a 4MB patch limit for XBLA games, this with a patch thats over 500MB, M$ flipped their shit. The fix tha tRagnorok64 said is what I heard as the possible solution. Mike Z said they cant reveal more info due to legal reason which I fully respect…
0sh’s post sums everything up nicely. Ultimately,** I don’t like the idea of a serious competitive community being tied down by the developer in any way**, even if they’re really cool and sexy developers. Right now we’re pretty small, so I think official forums would be perfectly suitable at this time, but I just want to stress that in the long run, the more autonomy, the better.
Official forums are an improvement though, so I’d be pleased with that too. Unfortunately, that would mean waiting around until whenever the 360 patch drops (ugh). If there’s any way we could get the official forum sooner rather than later, that would be really nice. Is that even possible?
For Skullgirls, Dustloop is totally dead, and not that many people in the ASW community seem to support the game. So that’s the last place we should be looking to as a “central hub” of anything. If anything would confuse newcomers, that would be it.
I think that this will be what ultimately decides whether we do this or not. If we were to get an indication the forums would be up within, say, the next two months then I would be more than happy to just wait. If, however, the developers want to focus on the PC port etc. or they have absolutely no idea when it will happen then we can look at going independent.
MikeZ still hasn’t replied to the first PM I sent him (probably because he’s swamped with messages about the donation drive and/or just taking a break after it all), but if Master Chibi or someone else with another way of contacting him could check this I’d be grateful.
Oh I know its dead. Been that way for a couple months now. Im just saying if being on SRK bothers people that much…
That being said I dont think moving to any other forum is good idea right now. I would That is an idea that should maybe be revisited after the the game is (hopefully) updated on 360. That way we could see if the there will be enough players interested in discussing the game online to warrant it.
Also, about a while back during a salty cupcakes stream, when the future of SG seemed a lot(a LOT) more bleak, Someone asked Mike about official forums in the chat. His reply was something along the lines of “…Forums? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA…”.
I contacted Mike Z on facebook, and said we should go ahead and start our own forum. He said that SG.com most likely will not have one. I will show proof.
I hope that clears up some confusion. Sorry for the low post count here. I’d like to add more credence to this post, but its all I got. I’ve been in contact with him because I wanted to try out for some possible voice acting roles (Brain Drain).
I talked to the actual CEO of Lab Zero games though, since he asked me to be a mod on the forums when they open up lol
Do what you will then~
Wait they’re actually working on the forums?
Yeah, I must admit, I’ve been too venomous about this whole thing. There are bad seeds in both communities and I don’t want to become one of them.
Yea. I am a smasher. I have SG downloaded on the XBOX, but I don’t play it much, but I am definately not a bad seed. I just want to help out a fellow community. I think smashers and SGers can help eachother.
@Nicknyte: You seem cool, so welcome to SRK! Also, thanks for contacting Mike Z.
@Chibi: Well, as I said before we can always look at merging with the official forums if it starts creating problems, but in the meantime we get to choose what features we want, etc… (Also, I would totally want you as a mod too, lol).
@AsteriskBlue:I can see your point, but the reason I think that we should do it now is that we have momentum and interest going strong after the donation drive, while your argument seems to center on the fact that SG has only a small community and it would therefore be a lot of work to get another forum up and running, which I do not think would be the case even if we didn’t have the extra attention right now.
So I’m thinking that we should go ahead with this, which leaves us in the previous position of needing to raise $350.
There’s no point in waiting for the 360 patch. Microsoft being a dick about it I bet the PC port will be released before the patch comes to 360
Selfquote on the forums thing
I’ve split your post up to make it easier to respond to:
The thing is, a lot of people like it here (me included). It’s not like we have no room or silly rules to follow (we got char subboards and even our OTT back), and most people liking SG also like other FGs for which this forum provides a platform. If you create an official forum,** this here isn’t going to disappear (at the very least it’s gonna stay to draw in players who happen to find this subforum and wonder what this game is).**
I also like it here, and dont see new forums as a complete replacement to SRK at all. However, SRK has a number of limitations from frequent slow/downtime and having much less control over how the community is run. The part I put in bold is actually a good thing - even if the community is ‘divided in half’ as you put it, they won’t exist in isolation from each other and I can see it creating a feedback loop that benefits the community rather than detracts from it.
That means: The community is split in half. That means: One has to crosscopy each and every sensible post, or one of the forums (this subboard vs official forums) will ‘come out on top’ and everyone will emigrate there with the other side dying.
If the offical forums die, they were senseless to begin with. If this SRK subsection dies, we become a hyper closed-off community with little to no fresh blood ever.
I agree and disagree with this. It’s true that there would be some initial redundacy as most of the inital players would just come from existing forums like this, but there would eventually also be new blood coming in from elsewhere. I personally know several people who love fighting games but flat-out refuse to join SRK because of its reputation. Your logic could also be inverted to say that more sites means more places people to potentially come into contact with Skullgirls.
Single forums are good for games which are “too big” to just be subboard (see SC2, WoW, etc) or ones where you’re a closed off community to begin with and/or there simply isn’t any overlying genreforum for whatever game you’re playing (so you have no choice). Neither of these is the case here.
Again, I see your point here but have to disagree because in its own way, Skullgirls is “too big to just be a subboard”. One of the things to some out of the donation drive is that there are a lot of people who are also interested in the world and art of Skullgirls that may not necessarily be interested playing the game competitively, and I think that Skullgirls as a whole would benefit from embracing that community just as much as it would form more tournaments, etc.
I can’t remember if it was Mike or Alex who said it, but one of them mentioned on stream that there had been some interest in expanding the franchise beyond 2D fighters, but money was an issue as always. If this were to happen in the future, then I doubt SRK would give it the attention it deserves for the simple reason that it’s not a fighting game (or potentially not even a game, in the case of comics, etc.).
Also, even if you only want to think about the gaming side of it, there are a lot of other bonuses. A wiki could be hosted for frame data/etc. (SRK has one, but few people know about it and it’s currently down, suprise, suprise.), as well as features for leaderboards, etc. if people want it. Ultimately iy comes down to us being able to do what we want or feel we need, rather than just what SRK *allows *us to do.
You severely underestimate the effect of the “random factor” in regards to community growth. For AAA titles or very specific games it is indeed irrelevant (nobody with a console that is interested in shooters will go to an FPS forum and then think “Call of Duty? Haven’t heard that one before! Let’s check it out”; and neither will a GC owner not know what Smash\Melee is); indie games thrive off getting a bigger community via ‘leeching’ it off big general forums.
I’m very thankful for this subboard and am confident SG wouldn’t have had half the sales if the devs had gone with an “official forums” solution from the get-go, rather than settling here.
Agree with the first part, though SRK isn’t going anywhere. As for the second, you might be right, but that doesn’t mean that we haven’t outgrown SRK or that it isn’t time to expand.
EDIT: tl;dr: I see SRK and a Skullgirls-specific forum as having entirely different purposes that can co-exist within the community.
