Let’s move on, I was’t trying to start something. BTW, I didn’t miss the point entirely, clones aren’t great, but I wanted to stress that moveset clones and move style clones are VERY different.

Moving on though…

I’d love to see a stance character (like Yoshimutsu), a transformation character (like Zelda/Sheik), a character like TvC Doronjo that utilizes other characters to support her (what would you call that?). I’d love to see a unique midrange zoner who can do a bit of rush down as well. Basically a zoning character, but one that isn’t “hardcore” zoner and can actually go in when the situation demands and has an effective rushdown and oki game (although obviously not as good as the “pure breeds”). Very technical character, maybe bit of a jack of all trades. Think Juri in SSF4.

There’s two versions of clones in fighting games.

Literal clones: Early PC versions of Melty Blood : ReAct were horribly guilty of this. The cast had 14 something characters that were good and evil versions of one another, but in reality they played way too similar to each other. This was rectified later on of course. Smash Brothers is guilty of this too. I don’t care if Ganon is a slower, harder hitting Captain Falcon or Falco / Fox / Wolf all have something special about them. Ganon is a clone of Captain Falcon, Falco and Wolf are clones of Fox, and Toon Link is a clone of Link. It’s a waste of a slot and horribly lazy design. Shotos in SF can go fuck themselves.

Gameplay clones: This is an original character design but with gameplay cloned from another fighter in a completely unrelated game. Basically the way every fighter ever made has a Ryu. I mean straight up clone. Not borrowing shit. As in random character has a dragon punch, has a fireball, and has a hurricane kick. Luckily with SG is running more along the lines of borrowing / making use of concepts then outright aping anyone. Hell, I’m ecstatic there’s no Ryu character. Keep it that way!

MvC3 is, to me, a bit too homogenized. You have characters who look differently but somehow end up playing rather similar to one another, to the point where you really end up picking the character that’s the ‘better version’.
