If I wasn’t interested in this game (I am INCREDIBLY interested, mind you), I feel like a demo where I have unlimited online play with just 3 characters would suffice. I would expect myself to have the reaction of “Oh cool, now I don’t have to buy the whole game but can still tinker around in it once in a while when bored.”
Like people said, online is a slippery slope.
It shows how good the online is.
BUT it can dismay people new to fighters who get beat easy, and to cheapskates like me, it can make the demo good enough that I wouldn’t care to dish out the cash for the full version.
I would say the demo would be good enough by itself with just a training stage with three characters and the ENTIRE tutorial. Yup, the ENTIRE tutorial. Remember about referring people to SG for $15 to get taught the basics? Nope, it’ll be free! Imagine how awesome that would be. And when people realize how fun the basics actually are, and/or if they like the unique artstyle and animations, they will buy the full game.
2P mode, online, arcade, and story can all be saved for the full version.
If you give training mode or unrestricted online in the demo it’ll deter a lot of people from buying it. If I wasn’t so obsessed with the game even I’d think twice about bothering to buy the full version if I had either of those at my disposal - those are all I’d need to learn the game after all.
I think a reasonable demo would be something like: 1 character playable online, only against other “trials” (mirror match only)
Local multiplayer (1v1, mirror match, no choice of character) (maybe a tweaked 1v1 with 1 assist-only character)
If there are different “levels” of tutorials all “basic” ones and 1 from each other category
an incomplete story mode.
and lots of annoying “Buy SkullGirls Now!” Screens
I’m buying the game day 1 anyway, but If it was another XBLA fighting game, That’d allow me to try it and decide whether to buy the game or not… (actually it’s a bit more than what I need since I never plan to touch story mode)
The problem I see with what I layed out is that the situation that very few people have the trial. So no testing out the online experience =/
Yeah, the game’s almost out…this won’t affect anything but I’d still like to describe my ideal trial… I need to do SOMETHING while waiting for this game to come out…
Ugh, I just called Xbox live Customer Service due to a security issue with my account and it’s going to be locked temporarily. They’ll refund the time I have lost due to the lock but. Ugh, I hope it gets unlocked before SG comes out, or else I’ll actually only be able to play the demo =(
This is an arcade release. Might as well just let the game come out and then just use the release like a Vanilla MVC3 or SFxT that you didn’t have to pay 60 dollars for. I understand people wanting to itch for the game but I’m fine just waiting for the full game with all 8 characters. The full game isn’t even going to have lobbies online yet so might as well just have it release and then have things iron out.
No online seems like a bit of a bad decision. People may not buy the game assuming that the online is awful; it’s probably the main reason KoF games don’t sell too well, truthfully.
Man if people want this game they’re just gonna fucking buy it. It’s only 15 damn dollars. Once the word gets around about how good the game is…they’re going to throw down 15 measly ass dollars.
exactly, this is a fully features new IP fighting game made by a FGC top player, with hand drawn animation, and crazy art, and using GGPO, and a tutorial mode that ups the level, and continued support after the fact…god there’s too many positives for any marginal FG fan not to feel totally justified spending $15.
People who don’t buy this are just being mean. (that’s my official stance :p)
The art with the boobs and panties puts many people off after they barely see anything.
And a lot of people don’t know who Mike Z is (I’ll be honest, I didn’t before SG).
A lot of people also think this is just a game mimicking the Marvel style but with poor gameplay.
At least that’s what it seems like after reading some of the comments in the shoryuken articles.
Not everybody has researched, and not everybody has the hype sadly.
I hope the demo can change at least some of those minds.
Pirating that thing is so easy, people probably ask “why did you even download the demo, a few more scrolls down the google page and you would have seen the torrent”
Yamane has been doing it since 1994 (before that really even).
My personal favorite.

I really love how MikeZ got the idea for the game to have jazzy music like MVC2 did. Except the songs aren’t just 45 second loops and they actually fit more with the theme of the game. MVC2’s music seemed kinda outta place from me but Michiru behind this shit is hot stuff especially since you get to hear a style of music she doesn’t normally portray in her games.
I think her sister even does the vocals for the song in the daytime neighborhood stage.
