I was using sarcasm and being incredibly facetious… I need to work on getting that across in my writing haha. I was just generalizing what I’ve seen jabs used for in other games. But you could in theory probably do 1 ground chain > jab assist > different chain as a combo extender. Anti-air jab is probably not that effective. You’d have to test that haha. And using them to tick throw would be silly. Its about the same as doing a jab while calling a throw assist.

If anything, the custom assist system will allow for some creative trolling.

I think the best part about the custom assist system is that it allows you to use pretty much anyone and get decent synergy out of it. Everyone is going to have at least one move that will benefit your character of choice.

Filia/Peacock/Ms. Fortune(nyantiair) - MSP?

my point was you’re not going to able to rely on comebacks from your third character like you can in mvc3 due to xfactor. As previously stated the DHC system and unsafe tags will make it harder to make sure the 3rd character will remain the last. Whether it’s vs. a 3 char team or a healthy solo character, your last character is basically going to be twisting in the wind either way so presumably it’s the best spot for a dedicated assist.

of course this is just theory. We’ll find out next week (hopefully)

well yeah, it’s hard. but if your assist is week solo you’ll probably lose whole match. if you have a choice it’ll seems logical to have independent character going last.

I absolutely HAVE to play Painwheel, but past that, I want to play everybody =X I want an 8 character team.

My current Idea is something like Painwheel/Peacock/Double

Any idea what sort of assists/order would benefit that team? I’m thinking that 2 hit slow claw attack for Painwheel, or the low circular saw multi hit attack. Peacock I’m thinking either her gun or a bomb, not really sure what the best option here is, but a projectile assist seems to make the most sense with her. I’m not sure with Double at all really, the butt slam seems like it could be a decent GTFO but I would like some sort of lock-down type assist to run Painwheel offense if I end up playing her on point.

If your running painwheel I’d suggest an assist that hits low. Because then you can be a nightmare with her on point because they have to look out for lows from your assist while your flying around. Again you can call assists in flight mode like sentinel in mvc2. Just be silly with it. Two moves that I think would be good with those characters are Peacocks Banjo slide and Double’s cillia slide. Hornet Bomb is a pretty good assist, but I don’t really think Painwheel needs a gtfo off me assist because of hatred guard. I think she has plenty of defensive options that it is not really needed. However, you said you wanted a lockdown assist, so Hornet Bomber also does that because it hits multiple times. It is a more dangerous to use in that situation, I believe it would be waay more punishable if they are blocking it, so you would have to come in fast after it. Though I guess you could bait out counterhits or something with it I dunno.

Like I said before though, Best Lockdown is Cerebella’s CC. Can’t go wrong with it. Just cover it as it comes in.

I thought about this assist too when I was theorycrafting Fortune/Parasoul myself, but I think for all the positive properties it has, the fact is, every other time you use the assist MF doesn’t do JACK SHIT because she has to call her head back before she can throw it again

It’s probably fair given all the utility it has, what with havig invuln. startup, causing stagger on hit, and being a low profile projectile and all. But I REALLY dislike finnicky assists like that (Dormammu’s Liberation and Valentine’s potential Shuriken/Syringe throw come to mind).

The obvious choice for an assist, given someone needs an AA is Nyantiair, but Fortune’s got some good stuff going on beyond that too, s.HP could be sick for the range it has with her head, and to manipulate her head remotely as an assist, s.MK and [h]s.MP are gonna be pretty useful for blockstrings having decent range and multi hit properties about them too

Edit: just realized looking at the wiki that her H Cat Strike overlaps with her headless command grab, may be more interesting than I thought… Might be worth it just to hear “OMNOMNOMNOMNOM” as much as possible xD

Yeah I was thinking about some of this. I mean low assist is good simply for the fact that it forces your opponent to commit to blocking in a direction even if you’re not directly attacking them. It’s why stuff like Felicia’s Rolling Buckler assist can be so annoying even if they don’t unblockable you with it. Just the fear of being forced to commit to a direction to block gets people opened up by that assist even when no real tight unblockable is set up. I think people will learn just how powerful that will be as time comes. If people can find good low assists that lock down well enough to set up mix ups after they finish blocking the assist then I think it will be pretty strong even.

To me they’ll both be powerful for their own reasons.

I really hope you can use taunts as assists. The salt that’s going to come online from trolling people with taunt assists. LOL.

Well it’s obvious that nothing will be as good as an XF comeback but, the other thing to realize is that plenty of characters can and have made comebacks in Marvel 3’s lifespan even after getting their XF completely burned out. Sometimes people burn their XF’s early to save their first characters from dying…and then Doom, Akuma or Wesker in the back with meters still has the power to come back any way. Like if I burn XF early on my team I try to switch Doom in if I have 2 people left just because anytime he hits you you should be gone.

The thing that will make this game different from even Marvel 2 is that no one will be as bad left by themselves as say Psylocke or CapCom was in Marvel 2. It was just a lot of accidental stuff in the right place that made it so they were crap characters on point that happened to have GDLK assists. Capcom purposely put in characters like Hsien Ko and Haggar that are based around that concept (well Haggar got buffed but Hsien Ko is basically the same concept) in Marvel 3. It seems like Mike Z wants to make sure that everybody can do something capable of swinging a match around without having to be an Evo hero like J.Wong. I’m not talking about like XF3 Wesker or Strider shit…just not as bad as Psylocke flailing shit around hoping she can hit Storm backed with Sent and Commando assist.

I think it will come down to making sure you know how to use all of your characters. If you want to ensure a character can stay in the back to amount a comeback…with the way the DHC system works you might as well play your “anchor” first. Which is the concept I’m going to try when the game comes out since after a DHC into Valentine, Painwheel would become the anchor at that point and once you lose a character…who you want to dictate as anchor will be a bit easier to accomplish. Mainly since you’re not worried about point characters being set back behind 2 other characters after every DHC.

Right now I want to mess with Painwheel up first with Valentine command grab assist and Parasoul CapCom assist as anchor.

Which brings up another good question. You think a lockdown assist will be absolutely imperative? I mean I know at least in Marvel 2 people got really good mileage just off a strong assist of any type multiple hits or not. Maybe that was partly due to how you blocking was easy to break unless you super jumped.

I know in Marvel 3 people always talk about how characters like Iron Man are basically unplayable without a lockdown assist because if he can’t lock you down there’s no way he can actually mix you up etc. Which I think is kinda false but it’s true enough in the sense that it’s just a lot easier. Which is not so much the case with Magneto…especially XF Magneto who I feel can open you up pretty hot no matter what. I feel like Doom in Marvel 3 is that nice inbetween where it’s a lot easier to open people up…but if you’re good with him and catch them not chicken blocking you can get an open often enough.

I really wanna try out command grab assist and see how that goes because having an assist that forces people to jump I think is going to be very strong in the meta. Especially with a character that will most likely have very strong high/lows on her own like Painwheel. People are already going to be jumping to try to get away from Painwheel’s mix ups even without an multi hitting assist and constantly throwing out something that forces them to jump I think will set up a lot of forced mix ups and reset opportunities.

Plus having a CapCom style assist with INVINCIBILITY (not even CapCom had invincibility) should be very interesting for pressure and lockdown.

Lots of theory stuff there but yeah I’m like having tons of fun brainstorming this game ATM and I’m sure I’ll just find crazy new stuff and have changes in ideas as the game releases.

the idea of Painwheel going Point -> Anchor sounds pretty nice, given how much red health her playstyle will have her accumulating thanks to her super armor… Play her to the point of like 1/3 or 1/4 health, DHC her out, and then let her recover to anchor for you later on in the match

That would be really cool, but there are no taunts in this game (unless something changed). Which makes me a little sad. Though I can understand why there are no taunts.
