hooo boy, the pelvis area is tough, gotta study more.
nice job DFist. I feel like I should get off my butt and learn all this stuff too.
looking at your pix where you draw in the bones over photographs, I get this sense that you might get away with drawing the scapula slightly larger (~5-20% larger, depending on which pic you look at). IIRC each scapula width is slightly less than 1/3 of the back width.
I’ve actually never studied skeletal structure before. Art schools are kind of a … joke around here. I’ve pretty much only studied muscle structure. I’m sure I already know the answer, but does knowing the skeletal make a huge differance if you learn basic proportions. And b/c I’m sure it does, any really good books you recommend?
I did most of my learning from drawing from life. It’s why my male drawings are so weak too. Ask a girl you know to model for you and they think nothing of it. Ask a guy you know and they start to ask questions. Sick of drawing myself in the mirror. Really limits the poses and angles.
hey rook: thx for the info. never knew that!
ashe83: I think knowing the skeletal structure is really helpful when drawing figures since everything is dependant on the skeleton. Good books for that would be Peck’s Anatomy for Artist which I have and Hogarth’s book. Outside of those two I haven’t looked at other books. The best thing an anatomy book can offer are the notes by the author and multi angle shots. Peck has both of those in his book that’s why I like it so much.
I actually have one of Hogarth’s, but it’s more about muscles. Not much on bones. I’ll look for Peck’s book tmr then.
Most of these studies helped me a bit DFist, *thumbsup
I haven’t looked into bones like ashe, hogarth really shows u only the bones you see on the body, i need to learn more so i can create a solid frame for my character, ill look into peck and see what his books have to offer.
Oh, anyone know why i can’t see landels pics in his sketchbook?

I went back and fix this one I did about month and 1/2 ago. I think one of the best sources for learning is from your own mistakes.
Wow…good stuff DF. I like it keep it up dude.
re: b/w pic of the airline hostess(?)
looks good, just a few crits:
- tone down the shadows under the brow, strong shadows in that area make a face look masculine (women have less pronounced browlines compared to men)
- right now her face feels large for her head, I think it’s because her eyes are too far apart. will provide a paint/drawover when I can?
Loving the detail, esphow you’ve done the nose.
50: Thx
Rook: Thx for the crits. You have good observation. Totally right about everything. Now that I’ve look at it again with a fresh eye, her mouth is missaligned too. So much for a fix up!
Damn dfist is getting pretty good. Only advice to you is to keep your brush work fresh. By that I mean clean sweeps of nice solid strokes. Some of them look a bit timid. Overall you are getting good. Love that Siperman.
you’re right on guy. There’s still a lot of stuff I’m uncertain about that’s why I doubt myself sometimes and it surely shows like you say. I gotta work on how I approach things too so I can avoid making mistakes that I don’t see until the end. Like these below where Superman’s eyes are too high and the girl’s mid hairline is way off.
nice stuff n.n i like your style. i myself am working on anatomy for a while before i post any more artwork here
Dreaded Fist:
What utensil do you use for sketching?
Pen, Pencil?
~Goodbye
I use H, HB, and H4 lead to sketch in pencils and I use the Pilot Hi- Tec C pens suggested to me by SFMC. Right now I just sketch with H4 lead to get really light lines then go over them with the pen. You can get the pens from http://jetpens.com/
I post this in the color combat thread and after a guy in my sketchgroup pointed out to me that the spine was misaligned I fixed it up and also fix the butt area. Still looks kinda weird though.
As one who hasn’t been around in eons, I can say that your work has improved immensely since I last saw it (those Zero sketches you did for me long ago). I’ve recently hit an epithany with muscles, myself. Drawing people can be so fun. I’ll have to take a page from your book and continue practicing. ^^
Oh, BTW, I look forward to your entry in my contest. ^^ Keep at it, my friend.
(|)ildcat: THX, I haven’t been sketching and studying as much as I should though.
here’s today sketches. I looked at some women’s jeans this time actually. The butt area is all wrong in the previous one.
Did these with a bigger pen to try and save lines but I just ended up using the same amount of lines, they’re just thicker this time haha.
