I will say that Homecoming did have some great settings for the Otherworld. The shit that was going on during the Hell Descent was freaking me out.
I remember playing Silent Hill 1 for the 1st back in the PS1 days, more scary then any horror movie. Though after playing it I thought of it reminded me of the movie Jacob’s Ladder
No akira = A rental for me.
He was the only thing holding me to this series. Sad, sad day indeed.
I saw a play through of this and it looked goofy as hell, and the lack of varying enemy types didn’t help it’s case either.
It’s now called Red Seeds Profile, is entirely in english, and available for import for like 20 bucks for ps3. If you want to try it.
I think it did okay BECAUSE it did that. I love that movie. Simply porting a game to the silver screen equals crap. Look at Mortal Kombat, and how true to the game it was. Came out cheesy and boring. Silent Hill movies could be great. All they have to do is create original stories that revolve around some reason to go to the town, and keep only the creatures from the game, their habits/weaknesses, the world-shifting, of course the ever-foggy ash falling setting in the real world, and voila.
That’s true, I know I saw that same girl in the trailer though for the second one so it’s at least a sequel and not a new story.
if they do make silent hill 2 movie, hopefully they make it around James story.
Well it’s not really an “if”, it’s being made. I hope they don’t do James in this because I really don’t want to see them tie that in with the first movie plot since it’ll be a sequel.
I’m having a B of a time tracking down a used copy of Silent Hill 2. Fucking picked over gamestops…
Every one in my area has at least 1 copy. It’s Silent Hill 3 I can’t find.
None on Amazon?
i got mine off ebay cheap
Cheaper than $11.99?
i dont think you can find silent hill 3 cheaper then 15.00. Are you really that poor? just wondering
The “music” (if you can even call it that) is what attracts me to this series the most.
It’s just a bunch of pipes banging on metal with cats scratching at the walls with some moaning noise in the back. Just a blender of stuff that sounds bad, yet terrifying. Probably why Silent Hill 3 is my personal favorite.
Next date I go on, when the conversation dies, I’m putting that shit on.
Oh and I haven’t played Silent Hill 2 and it kills me inside. I’m making it my personal mission to get to it in the coming weeks.
Oh and I only played 53 minutes of Homecoming and it killed me inside. I’m making it my personal mission to bang my head into the wall until I forget. Hopefully, in the coming weeks. Will be holding onto the soundtrack though.
I liked the idea of playing as a female, guess i get tried of looking at male characters all the time. They need to make more playable female characters in silent hill
Kind of late on posting this sorry. Silent Hill 8 has a title now - Silent Hill: Downpour. We got a couple of screenshots and a release date of “Autumn 2011” which is coming up pretty fast. The screenshots look good, but I can’t help but be reminded of Alan Wake. I enjoyed Alan Wake, but that had an “open outdoors” feel where the vastness was the underlaying theme, in Silent Hill I enjoyed the traversing of the abandoned town more, so we’ll see how it works!

Silent Hill 2 is my favorite game of all time, for reasons that have already been covered in this thread. For me personally, I don’t think that story will ever be topped. I love it so much that I’m actually slightly worried that I’ve placed it on a pedestal too high–so high, that even if the planets aligned and a game were to come out that legitimately had a better story, I would still be biased and think SH2 was better. It’s one of those games that makes me wonder why the “Are games art?” debate even exists.
Seriously, to anyone who hasn’t completed Silent Hill 2: do it.
On the discussion of the series as a whole, IMO the order goes SH2 > SH3 > SH4 > SH:H > SH:O > SH:SM. Why?
- SH2: BRILLIANT story, nice visuals for its time, smart puzzles, deep and interesting characters, incredible attention to detail and small touches, engaging atmosphere, and the best plot twist of not just any game, but possibly any entertainment medium ever.
- SH3: One of the prettiest games released last gen, probably the scariest SH, good story. Level design could have used some reworking, but overall another great entry in the series.
- SH4: Great game, but flawed. Apartment segments were cool and creepy, great story. Unfortunately, combat was poor, puzzles were dumbed down (could they even be called puzzles?), and the second half of the game being an escort mission was painful. Ghosts, in general, were just stupid.
- SH:H: Honestly, I think this game is vastly underrated. Yes, it borrows a lot (possibly too much) from the movie, but every time I play it I don’t see it a bad game, but rather something reeking of wasted potential. There are so many things in it–combat, graphics, characters and their progressions, puzzles, plot–that make me think, “Man, if they had just tweaked this a little bit, or polished this more…” Definitely a flawed game and not one of SH’s best, but undeserving of a lot of the hate it gets.
- SH:O: Bad. Story is pretty terrible and is the worst in the series, combat sucks. Bad design choices (respawning monsters in a game with very limited weapons+ammo? What?). Puzzles are okay, but that’s about it.
- SH:SM: Piss-poor. Puzzles are completely trial-and-error, a.k.a. “pick this up and see where it fits.” Enemies are terribly designed and more laughable than frightening, and the “combat” is the absolute worst way to interact with enemies EVER in a game. Whoever decided stumbling around through blue doors until you eventually exit while waggling your way out of little geometry faces trying to hug you sounded anything remotely resembling scary, interesting, or fun should be IMMEDIATELY fired. All of that’s bad, but the worst part? The game is bland. Dull. Boring. One of the best parts of previous SHs was being able to examine nearly everything you come across, and getting the main character’s personal take on it. This not only adds life and depth to the game but also helps connect the player to the character. In SH:SM, it’s 99% walking through empty, uninteresting scenery from cutscene to cutscene, with those atrocious “battles” and braindead puzzles scattered along the way. The story is passable, but not nearly good enough to make up for everything else being a train wreck.
Basically, Alan Wake is the best Silent Hill since 4. I left out SH1 because I never got around to beating it.
As for the OSTs, I think it’s SH3 = SH2 > SH4 (Japanese) > SH4 (American) > SH:SM > SH:O = SH:H > SH1.
SH3 and SH2’s OSTs are godlike. SH4(J) was great too, while SH4(A) lost some of the better songs from the JP version while getting a few good remixes in return. “You Were Always On My Mind” from SM makes it stand out, while the OSTs from SH:O, SH:H, and SH1 were fairly mixed, with songs ranging from “pretty good” to “meh.”
While I’m sad that Akira Yamaoka won’t be doing the music for Downpour (and the preview clips from the Dexter guy are disappointing), it’s nice to know that he’s working with Shinji Mikami on Shadows of the Damned, which will mostly likely (and hopefully) be awesome. Is it bad that I preordered the game just to hear some new Akira Yamaoka stuff?
Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill SH had a very strong emotional connection with me and were one of the few games/fictional things that got to me a bit. Unfortunately I had to many techincal issues with them for me to consider them my favorite, IMO SH3 was the best of the series and the true highlight of the SH. Everything about it felt so polished and refined, like It felt complete from start to finish and I never came away with this feeling of lost potential. The story, characters, soundtrack and visuals all came together perfectly and was one if not my favorite game that whole year…and yeah a certain plot point was upsetting but it did add to the story and heathers depth quite a bit. I really wish they could continue on with her in some future iteration, she is easily one of the more appealing characters outside harry and james imo.
