Yeah KoToR was my first Bioware game. I’m not much of a PC gamer. You may look back on BG2 and such as good games, but I don’t think they’ve aged very well. PC games always seem to be on the cutting edge and wind up looking like bad prototypes a few years down the road. Hell just look at Morrowwind. It was awesome back in 2002 but it’s such crap now. Yet Chrono Trigger is still as enjoyable as ever.
I still play BG1 and PST to this day.
I always thought BG2 sucked though…
I recommend Vagrant Story if your looking for a good story and unique gameplay. However there are alot of tedious things about. The risk meter for example, every time you attack or chain it goes up, the higher the risk the lower your hit % goes and enemies deal more damage. The container system is very limited considering the amount of weapons and armor you will want to store for combining and every time you store or remove it will force you to save which takes forever…
All that said what RPG doesn’t have something tedious or time consuming?
What bothers me about RPGs is that they don’t HAVE to be tedious or time consuming. Yet, the fans take that similar stance on them: “What RPG DOESN’T have something tedious about it?” They condone it, but they don’t have to. RPGs are not inherently shitty, it just appears to be convention to have them made like that.
I’m not saying developers go “oh, let’s make a shitty RPG!” But, with the prevailing opinion that these tiresome gameplay aspects are okay, they can really rest on their laurels. We never call them on it, so why should they fix it, anyways? It might sound like I’m waxing philosophical, but if the majority of people who play RPGs don’t perceive these things are broken, but rather, as something that comes with the territory, are they really broken?
THAT is why most JRPGs have shitty gameplay, or at least, gameplay that falls short of its full potential.
Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door was epic along with original, IMO.
Also Kingdom Hearts is pretty good from what i hear.
Just got done playing some of that new star ocean. Pretty good imo but I am still looking for eternal sonata.
If you like them a bit harder, Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne is nice. You will get rocked by a boss that has an affinity your current party is weak to, and need to create an entire new party at times, but the challenge is fun.
I’ve never really liked WRPGs, to each their own. I thought Mass Effect was incredibly boring. I guess I’m not the choose-your-own-adventure type.
Suikoden II, gotta be the most epic (best to me :D) RPG game ever. Good luck finding it though, I bought mine for $120 on eBay They go for higher than that too haha
a m a z o n…
Video games in general have something tedious about them that we simply accept, ussually its something you have to do to get the full game experience. In fighters for example unlocking all characters and colors, and lately items for customizing. I hated T5DR for that, I wanted to get all the items but there was no fast or fun way to get that much money. Some games have endings, missions or levels that cannot be played unless you perform a rediculous task “beat the game in super ultra hard difficulty in one hour” or something stupid like that.
I agree though, that is not the aspect of the game that I enjoy.
By the way in FFX obtaining the venus sigil which is required to get Lulu’s ultimate weapon was very annoying. You had to sit there and dodge 200 lighting bolts consecutively. The part I hated the most about it is that there was no counter keeping track of your progress, nothing there to tell you if you were done or if something reset the count. If you wanted to get this item you had to either keep track yourself or just dodge bolts for about an hour or more and hope that was enough:grrr:
I think that there are tedious things in most genres of games, but they’re USUALLY optional, Street Fighter 4. Like, you don’t really need the costumes and customization options to truly enjoy what’s fun about a fighting game, you know? Most game genres, I think, keep tedium to a low level. RPGs, I think, are the only genre that lets it run rampant, and has the only fans which are consistently okay with that.
lol i jus bought that game for 3 bucks at gamestop thinking i got a deal :wasted:
but crossedge is comin out im definately going to pick it up its got characters from darkstalkers and disgaea so hopefully its good

i would also recommend the ___ of mana series except the ds ones (:annoy:) they were crap
those and hmm chrono cross, legend of dragoon its really hard for me to get into rpgs so there like a dime a dozen for me
i liked the fan translation of mother 3 (earthbound 2) for the gba. i played it on my psp so it was pretty convenient with the custom button mapping and save states.
story is pretty good, very original and surprisingly thoughtful. lots of good laughs if you played the first earthbound for the snes.
battle system is classically simple; attack, magic, special, item… etc… biggest thing is the combo system. gotta time the attacks to the music or something. heres a vid demonstrating:

the emulator had some lag to it so i couldnt really time it too well, but i was able to mash out 2-7 hit combos when i tried. while the combos are pretty cool, they arent crucial to the game.
good pacing to the game too, uses a chapter system iirc. usually has you doing some cool stuff so you dont grind it out too long. you also see the enemies on screen so you know where the battles are.
i kind of thought i was done with rpgs, but playing this one made me think that there are still some good ones that need my attention.
while not true rpgs, oblivion and fallout 3 are two fanfuckingtastic games.
oblivion is about swords and magic and hella deep character builds.
fallout 3 is about guns and pinpoint shooting mode (VATS) and hella run and gun.
both are first person rpgs. very similar look and feel, very different game mechanics. oblivion is about 70+ hrs if you get into it. fallout is about 20+
Come on now…you’re telling me WRPGs don’t have boring and tedious grinding as well?
I’m not saying you’re wrong about JRPGs, just that WRPGs have as many faults as well. I grew with console and SF, so it was natural I’d be into JRPGs. Never got into the idea of playing games on the PC.
There are too many formulaic RPGs on both sides out there, and when something comes along that mixes it up well (Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter), it’s usually spurned for being different or otherwise ignored because no one hypes it up.
When I said that, I didn’t mean “JRPGs, but not WRPGs”. It’s just that I’ve never actually finished a WRPG (unless you count System Shock 2, but that’s a huge stretch), so I don’t really feel qualified to discuss them.
And yes, I agree that games that mix up the formula usually get shunned, and Dragon Quarter is not only one of my favorite RPGs, but I think it’s a perfect example of that. Granted, The World Ends With You was well-received, and it was a good game. But, to be perfectly honest - and I hate saying this, cos it sounds like uninformed, fanboyish nonsense - I think a lot of that had to do with the developer’s name, the graphical aesthetic, and the superficial story.
cross edge looks pretty promising i cant find a release date though
well at EB, pre-orders ship at 5/26/09.
ALSO THE RELEASE OF INFAMOUS WOOT WOOT!
Replaying Dark Cloud 2 right now, you should do the same.
Legend of Legaia
I loved Chrono Trigger as well. Finished it again on DS.
You need to try Secret Of Mana (snes too). You’ll find a way to make it run if you don’t have a snes anymore =)
As for non japanese rpgs, the fallout and the kotor series are awesome. Mass Effect is fantastic, and was my favorite 360 rpgs 'till fallout3.
There is no jrpgs on the 360 to that day that compares to thoses 2.
