Shame the artist is a bit of a cunt. Besides that, I was kinda excited for this game until I heard it was basically a boss rush and is short as hell. Not really down for that. Also I’m looking at videos and the hub world is super huge for like no reason. SotC had a huge hub world with nothing in it, but it was also basically a tech demo of what the PS2 was capable of. The game was like stunningly beautiful both graphically and visually to look at. It was impressive on both a technical and artistic level. You don’t get that in a sprite game. I kinda just don’t see the point other than “SotC did it too so that’s what we did.” I don’t think I’ve ever immediately lost all hype for a game the day it was released before.
@angelpalm There’s a steam demo for you to try for yourself instead of taking my word or Pozer’s word for it…why not try making up your own mind? If someone doesn’t like something I like I have no problem with that, but when they makeup shit out of their ass claiming their opinion is fact I will call them out of it.
@J-ride Yeah I wish the game had more than 20+ titans too, it’s definitely a case of “amazing game, but left me wanting more”, but it’s the first game from an indie dev of 3 people so what can you really expect lol, that and like I said quality>quantity is what I prefer I felt like I definitely got my money’s worth, but that’s all personal preference, and as a cheapass gamer I rarely if ever buy any game outside steam Christmas sales I only made an exception since I wanted it on vita.
@JohnGrimm If you think the hub world in SoTC was huge and empty for no reason other than to serve as a tech demo for the PS2 than you completely missed the whole point of the game as any fan would tell you. The reason SoTC is so well loved is not just because it has nothing but giant monsters, but because the universe and game play mechanics all work in perfect harmony to deliver a very specific and singular artistic vision and feeling to the player. The drab look and lack of color, the fact that you have to keep on mashing to get your horse to run rather than holding the analog stick or a button down, the fact that it takes you forever to actually get to any boss, the actual combat mechanics being cumbersome, the very sparse exposition, and just about every other element of the game is the way it is for a specific reason. Clearly Team Ico wanted make the player feel a certain way emotionally and psychologically imbuing the game with a very somber and contemplative tone, even making the player feel bad for killing what are otherwise peaceful creatures. TS aimed to make the player feel the same way SoTC did, but just does it in a very different way, so you can feel both games failed to make you as a player feel the way they intended you to feel, but to be so simple minded as to not be aware of the attempted intent by both games is simply a failure of observation on your part. I understand and to a degree agree with your complaint of the game being a boss rush mode, but the fact is including smaller non boss enemies in TS or SoTC would completely undermine the game play mechanics, emotional, and psychological mood the developers were going for making them very different and less laser focused. It’s like complaining that there’s no Fallout RPG abilities in Halo multiplayer…shoehorning them in artificially would make it something very different than what the developer wants.
it’s just like @crotchpuncha said in the VGG thread, a developer doesn’t owe you shit, they make whatever games they want because it’s their product not yours, as a consumer it’s up to you to decide if something is worth your time and money or not. Anyone can play armchair developer all they want it doesn’t mean anyone will listen to them, I hope you guys try the demo at least and love this game as I do, but if not then close this thread all you ungrateful fuckers!!! crys to mods JK I’m not Exposedd I’m perfectly cool with others disliking the game.
I like how you say “it’s designed this way because you’re supposed to FEEL FEELINGS” without even bothering to go into what those feelings are or how the game is supposed to be conveying them, like the vast empty fields in SotC making you feel alone and secluded as you ride away from your dead girlfriend trying to find everything you can to save her not even knowing if what you’re doing is even going to work or whether you even have a chance or not, the long horse rides giving you plenty of time to think about the futility of the quest.
Look man, I like SotC. I didn’t say it was ONLY a tech demo with no artistic purpose, I even said it was impressive artistically and not just technically. The thing is though, that game had a story that was set up and carried out, it was deliberate in its themes and goals, there was never a moment when you didn’t understand what was going on. That kind of thing isn’t happening in Titan Souls either. As you said yourself the story isn’t really given to you, you have to figure it out. Well, besides not really being given a reason to kill titans other than it’s a video game, I also don’t really care about the story enough to find out what it is because the world is so empty and nothing. By taking both of these elements from Souls games and SotC, you’ve managed to take the best things about each respective game and completely ruin the point. The big empty nothingness void in SotC was a powerful way to get you into the role of your established character and get into the mood of the story that they told you. You’re interested in finding out the lore in a Souls game because of the densely packed world you’re running through with all of these big set pieces that look important and imposing with all of these characters that have rich personalities and traits, people from far away lands who worship such and such king and were taught in whatever form of combat because it was the cultural learnings of the city they were from. You WANT to learn more about the story and the backgrounds for what the world came from because there’s so much going on and you’re only told enough to get you through the story.
You can’t put both of these things together, they almost directly contradict each other. With no major story involved I’m not very excited to eplore a huge world with nothing in it and I have a hard time caring about the story when there’s nothing really to draw my attention to it. Where did the titans come from? Who cares, what does it matter to me any? It feels like they took a bunch of elements from games they like and just slapped them together without really thinking about the consequences. But maybe none of that matters, maybe all someone wants out of it is boss rush. Well that’s fine and dandy, but the gameplay is too simplistic for me to really care about boss rush. They did a good job of putting 19 boss fights in the game even if it’s still a short game, but for my money I’d rather grab Malicious if I’m looking to wail on some dudes with minimal story. That game took a simple idea and built a lot around it, and it shows. Nothing against this game, but like I said before, I was really excited for it until it was actually revealed what it would entail. If there was something to explore, puzzles or dungeons or something, maybe I could get behind it, but there’s too little of everything and I don’t feel like it is more than the sum of its parts.
15 buck for such a simple game is a little too much.
I’ll wait until it’s 2 dollars on steam or something seems like a fair price
Looks interesting, but mos def has steam sale written all over it.
@PozerWoIf how many deaths did you have total? I died like 15 times to the stupid mushroom boss lol.
@JohnGrimm i just heard TB’s soundcloud about not being able to review TS because he said in his first impression he isn’t a fan of boss rush style games with no level progression and the artist called him Toilet Biscuit in response which is childish as a developer you must have a thick skin. That being said we’re all just human.
And in response to your last post I actually have explained several times specifically how the game attempts to make you feel a certain way you don’t seem to have bothered reading my posts I don’t know how I can be any cleverer without repeating myself. TS to me gives off the same strong sense of tone and atmosphere as SoTC, obviously it’s a bit different due to there not being any girl to save or horse to ride, but that core aspect of isolation, solemness, and mystery of the universe is very strongly present. Also I’d bet the decision to make you respek at a checkpoint and walk all the way back to a boss rather than spawn you outside the boss that killed you was made to make you think about the futility you mentioned.
Also you said “it was basically a tech demo of what the PS2 was capable of”…I bet you anyone reading that sentence would call that saying it is ONLY a tech demo and not really praising it as anything else. Only after saying that do you mention it being impressive artistic all as well, also you made the assumption that a modern pixel art game can’t be impressive from an artistic level…wtf that’s one of the dumbest things I’ve read in a while lol on a technical level of course it isn’t pushing PS4 and PC’s, but artistic merit is completely subjective you’re using your own opinions as a benchmark for objective fact just as pozerwolf was doing. If you don’t find something impressive hats fine but that doesn’t mean that is ISN’T impressive it just means it isn’t impressive to you personally.
Also I understand why you would think that taking the two most powerfully atmospheric elements of both SoTC and DaS1 and fusing them together would be contradictory you explained it well but I disagree. By including enough detail into the artistic look as well as piquing the player curiosity about the world by feeding the player crumbs of info you draw the player into a world that is mostly empty yet has enough to make you care, clearly you don’t and that’s ok but I do. I do want to know where the titans come from or who my player character is and why he is killing them and the game gives ambitious answers to those questions which makes it retain it’s unique allure to me.
Anyways sorry you’re not interested in this “boss rush” game, but if you played the demo that should be enough to help you make an informed decision ask yourself do you want to do that 17 more times or not? Lol.
Just spent 15 minutes cutting off every piece of vine off the flower boss got a trophy for it, figured out it’s weakspot and pattern of turning and died to spores ughhhhhhhhhhhh!
@PozerWolf what was your death count? I just beat the game in like 4 1/2 hours with 268 deaths.
Did you beat the truth boss? I just did, wow so I guess I have to beat hard mode to get the real ending…that’s a nice throwback and interesting to translate language as a reward
TS has one of the best fucking final bosses ever holy shit it’s just incredibly well designed all over, super challenging without being cheap, beautiful as hell too and dem sound effects.
Edit: After beating the game I agree that more puzzles and more lore would be very welcome in this world, but there are some puzzles, lore, and secrets to be uncovered as well as a secret language their is definitely a back story behind the game, but it’s just really amibguous at first glance and requires you to do some of the heavy lifting mentally, I’m sure beating hard mode will shed more light on the story.
Admittedly I’ve only played the demo - to me this seems like a great idea, but not a great game. Not so much a gameplay rhythm as the sound of smacking into one brick wall after another.
Glad some people are loving it, though, as I respect any developers who refuse to compromise to this extent. And if it comes on PS+ I’ll definitely stick it on my Vita…
fuck hard mode, the slime blob is clearly the first and easiest boss in the game meant to be a tutorial for the player I killed it on my first try, but on hard mode I died 5 times to it ughhhhh.
@HeaT how far are you? hard mode is kicking my ass holy shit it’s like wayyyyy harder and apparently people are speed running hard mode+iron mode!
I only killed 4 titans and have 60 deaths -_-"
i think im about halfway through normal. i think i found 2 hidden titans that are off the path of progression. i found them in a weird 4 screen exit repeating maze section. i think they are not part of the story because i already opened the door to the next section and THEN i went exploring and found these 2. game is super dope so far. i also dont think no roll mode is as hard as you think it is. from my observation every boss is doable with just the ability to run and ive killed a few with only run and not having to dodge.

There are a few titans I imagine to be nearly impossible with no rolls especially the last two, but maybe you’re right I’ll try no roll mode after I beat hard mode. On hard mode all titans have remixed attacks and are faster so hard mode+iron mode is just insane you only get 1 life lol you’re not even allowed to combine them probably because it’s physically impossible to beat lol.
I know what 2 titans you’re talking about, one of them is kind of easy to beat, but the other one killed me like 20 times because it keeps jumping around, that was definitely one of the most well designed titans in the game.
i beat the game yesterday, 3 hours, 178 deaths, did a lot of exploring to find hidden stuff. i only ended up killing 19 titans at the end. you say there are 20 total so i guess i missed one? also, ive read that there are actually 23-26 titans, not sure if that is a rumor or not. i jumped right back in to hard mode w/ translation immediately after i beat it.
i enjoyed the game pretty dope. i agree with others in this thread, i didnt get any dark souls vibes from this game.

If you kill every titan you get to fight the final boss which is through the door right after you fight the last boss. Having 178 deaths is impressive I had around that until the hidden titan lol he killed me a ton before I figured him out.
Ughh stuck on mushroom titan in hard mode, I know how to kill him, but his tracking when he lands on me is nearly perfect have to roll away at last possible second and line up the shot.
for the mushroom what you have to do is time it so you stand next to him when he does stand still small jumps. the count is something like 2 or 3 tracking large jumps then 2-3 small jumps so after the last large jump just go stand next to him then then roll out. it’s interesting that you have to be under the hallucination effect to see the weak spot that was pretty cool.
i beat all 19 on hard yesterday, total death count was 319. i killed one hard boss on first try which was crazy. truth was way more difficult on hard, i make that shit look like it mad easy walk in the park shit but that fight took me like 50 min of trying and recognizing patterns in the 2nd and 3rd form… check out the vid, but be warned this is a SPOILER if you havent seen the last boss so dont watch it if you want to experience it fresh. DAT FIST PUMP THO
