SFxT General Discussion #4 - Witty title

@ FengShuiEnergy: Exactly what roknin said. Playing with an awareness of the clock and the life lead situation is a pretty integral part of the game. Maybe FSE should try playing Sim or Guile for a bit. You’re never more aware of when you need to go in and score some hits and when you can hang back and let them hang themselves than when you’re down the life lead at 20 seconds left, using Guile. Try it, you’ll see!

Someone told me to post this over here. Seems to be another tournament I can’t take part in. Check it out!

Since I do not have the option of multiplayer until after labor day, I’m finally learning how to perform this mystical thing called “pressure.” It is absolutely amazing. Now my upclose game will hypothetically be better than "mash two light buttons: did it hit? Hooray 60 damage. Block? Welp I tried but we’re in neutral again."
And doing lights before going for a throw is wondrous. You guys should totally try it!

You should also try Elena’s st.mp. I got some success using cr.lk > cr.MP > st.MP as a block string. And st.mp is a 2 hit move so it’s a little easier to confirm if you hit. Or you can just cr.lk > st.MP which is a two frame link that gives you enough time to tell if they are standing or not.

So now it’s no longer anti sfxt impressions, just full on thancruz mode huh?

Bah, this whole Rhino Horn whiffing on crouchers really ferments my grapes. I’m trying to learn how to hit confirm and there’s this whole other thing I need to watch out for as well. Tbh I am thinking about leaving out c.mpxxrhino horn out of grounded combos for the time being.

Elena seems pretty hard to control space with in spite of her longish pokes and I was having problems in neutral with her. Then again I should expect as much using a new character vs. Hardest mode Claw.

If you play on PSN we could play some sets. But if not here’s some advice (or at least what I did and it kinda helped).

-Pick Ryu and Julia
-Set the CPU to cr.mk a bunch of times then tag and cr.mk some more.
-Slightly outside of that range you’re free to do a lot of things. Mallet smash, b+HK, HK (I prefer this since it’s basically the same but if someone jumps in it could make it whiff), even your overheads have more range than Ryu’s cr.mk (not Julia). Pretty much this is where you want to be at counter poke distance.
-Also you st.lk has more range than many pokes. I think it’s more than Julia’s cr.mk… But I’m certain it’s slightly less than Chun’s far.mp, and more than Nina’s+Ryu’s cr.mk .
-Mallet smash forces standing so it’s a good BnB starter. But it’s slow as molasses, so stick to HP mallet smash and EX unless you AA with st.mp or st.lp.
-If you AA with st.mp or lp mix things up between MP mallet smash and HK Lynx tail TC.
-And if you need to get in max range slide is a good option, as well as EX Rhino horn (You can also charge this). Max range slide is negative on block but not punishable by a lot. But EX Rhino is +4.

  • And once your opponent starts playing conservatively rush his ass down if you think he is gonna stand Lynx tail. If you think he will crouch either EX or HP mallet. Eventually they will get annoyed and make a big mistake and you can capitalize with the ex rhino mixup or her regular BnB.

That’s what I’ve started doing when I want to use mallet smash if the opponent crouches and doesn’t see it coming and if it’s blocked? Doesn’t matter she’s safe regardless lool.

I am on PSN but I’m on vacation for another two weeks without suitable internet. I’m just trying to use this time to get myself into an actual fighting game mindset, and with that I should be able to get home and blow through C rank.

Mallet Smash? Safe? I guess if I am using Elena I will have to use it eventually. When you say AA first do you mean condition them not to jump for Smash (I am more worried about reversals) or are we setting up these moves right after an AA for more + frames?

Mallet smashes are +3,+4,+5, and +10 on block. It’s more of a setup for mp mallet to hit easier. I meant since her AAs are special cancelable it’s best to press your advantage since when most people get AA they crouch block and LP/MP mallet is so slow (28/ 32 frame start up) also it’s really hard to see the start up since the screen moves up. Getting hit by a reversal is of the risk though. But if you condition them to stand you can even EX lynx tail and it they stand then you get a nice combo into HKD. If they block then you’re at -1. But Elena at -1 isn’t bad because her st.lk is so amazing.

Who would you guys say is the strongest character in the game? IMO its either Nina, Hwoarang, or Kazuya, what do you guys think?

Asuka.

For me it’s Jin.

I think Law, Nina, Hwo, Kazuya and Chun make top 6.

Honestly though, it feels odd saying that, like it feels odd going yo, this is the best character in the game because Jin isn’t OP, he’s just really good at a lot of things. I don’t feel Nina is OP either, or Kazuya or Hwo.

SFxT is a pretty damn well balanced game. It really is a game where people should pick based on how they like to play and who they like to play rather than who’s good.

Tekken Tag is like that as well, anybody can win, especially because you have a partner.

I think Jin is the toppest of tier, and I agreee in the top 6 except maybe Alisa is there or Ogre.

I feel slightly different regarding overall balance, however. I do not think that there are any super weak characters and everyone is viable to a good degree, but the top tiers are a real cut above the rest. I think it was Ultradavid who tweeted that mid-high level play you can see any character win and that’s really fun, but at the very top level of play it will be a top tier fest.

So while I think the top ones are really clear cut, I am much more interested in how people think are bottom 6.

I think Ibuki and Poison are as bad as it gets.

It’s kind of hard to just call out a bottom 6 though because I could say I think Hugo is there, I think Blanka is still there and I think Rog is nothing special but all of those characters have advocates with good points. Cody is probably that bad in 2013 as well but look at Coolkid.

Asuka I’d say is definitely bottom ten, probably not bottom 5 but she’s not higher than that. Asuka has been shown to be a good anchor.

The game still has a lot to be discovered as well, I mean, Guy in my mind could go anywhere with enough exposure, same with Abel, same with Jack.

lol srk

srk triple post.

Law, Hwoarang, or Kazuya

Bottom=Toro and Kuro

Strongest character are (IMO):

Kaz, Chun, Law.

There are several other extremely strong characters like Nina, Jin, Hwo, etc… But I feel those three are a distinct top.

Where do people think Lei belongs? I think it is easy just to stick him in the middle, but he has so many quirks I have a hard time placing him like I would a more straightforward character.

Now that I have found a 5f safe jump off of Bryan’s Gatling Combination, do people still think that ending f.mk string with Mach Breaker is the best option? Cannot say I’ve ever even seen someone end it in MK on youtube.
