Yeah that is a better explanation of it than what I was getting at.
Coming from Laura it was clear that G’s command grab is a different kind of tool. Slow but the only other “normal” command grab in the game that is comparable to Gief’s SPD ranges. I’ve actually enjoyed that aspect of G because the command grab is more a supplemental tool than something I feel like I need to be gunning for.
That said I still don’t like command grabs in this game for anyone not Mika. Every time I miss one I die a little inside.

Saw the G discussion about his VT earlier, for some reason I tend to do better with VT2 than VT1 when I play him, its kinda weird since everyone (other than Smug) exclusively uses VT1
In terms of moveset, I think Kolin probably would have made the better MJ.
G has multiple MJ tribute animations. He’s the best choice in the game.

I’ve had the same experience. At least for me I don’t think its anything about efficacy (VT1 just has so much going for it) but more that as DJ said VT2 forces you to still play G instead of going ultra instinct for a bit.
That greatly limits his potential but I for me it also forced me to stay engaged in working on my approach to the match throughout, try to manage neutral, stuff like that. So while the VT isn’t strictly better it can lead to better results across time just due to trying to play more patient, smart, and clean (got a long way to go for all that).
Ideally I’d have both - the solid game approach backed up with VT1 fuckery - but as I’ve played better and better players it has been a struggle to polish up my general gameplay. So in the super short term limiting complicating factors has helped.
And for general fun factor hitting the VT2 grab is really satisfying and does a bunch of damage unlike the combos I like to drop in the clutch. 
Edit: Regarding Smug using VT2 I get the sense that he is just trying to stay awake playing online randos. He does well with it but as B and others said he is also just really good at the game in a general way. Dude st.HK’d a Karin nearly to death just because he could. I think anyone would be nuts to not use VT1 with G when it came down to brass tacks.

Better the st.HK than the command grab. Upside of being in the Gold ranks is no one is uploading when I get clowned on online (aside from when Akhos does it but that is by request 
).
When G grabs you 5 times in a row it should automatically delete your CFN and install Jump Force on your machine. Hide your shame in the arena.

Also it feels good to be a bully with gief.
Most the characters I vibe with aren’t bullies. But gief just like a walking bulldozer.
I’m playing on a new account so we’ll see how this goes once I get higher up… But gief is a jerk. Seems like he’s being slept on…
