Well if most Ingrid fans were like @Miðgarðsorm , I don’t think that would be the case. Initially I didn’t hate Ingrid. I just didn’t think she belonged in Street Fighter. Over the past few years, every fan of Ingrid I’ve come across has been like RLAMMJR. The constant image spam over multiple forums has changed that. When you can’t go to a news story on Street Fighter without Ingrid image spam. Your opinion gets altered. Ingrid looks like a twelve year old, so people posting lewd images of her tends to trigger people. Considering that the FGC near 100% male, weird Images of Ingrid triggers most of the FGC. This gives you the current Ingrid backlash.

About that, I should point out I never saw a twelve year old girl with a breast size like that. At least my female classmates had nothing like that at 12. What a sad childhood I had!
To me, Ingrid has the external appearance of a 15-16 year old, and certainly is far older. A thing I forgot to say about her is how her sentence patterns in Japanese are those of an old geezer, peppered with outdated teen slang terms no one uses anymore, from the Eighties and even Seventies. Think of it as if it were your grandmother trying to sound cool using the teen slang of your mother. Or a time traveler who either studied the wrong decade, or had wrong data about the correct one… or else studied the right one, but then something happened. A very interesting thing, obviously lost in its English version.

It’s been a long time since I’ve been a teenager but when I was girls were built like grown women. At my local arcade we’d play the “Jail Bait Game”. We’d guess a girls age and then ask her how old she was. Let me tell you, it made me glad I was a minor at the time because some of those girls I thought were 20 ended up being 14. Shotos are popular because they are strong, iconic status and beginner-friendly. Shouldn’t be a surprise to see three of them on top.

I even really like 3 out 5 of them (i consider Chun/Cammy/Juri are some of the best SF designs), but as design archetype they are

Female=/=Waifu
If one of them was old, or fat, or over muscular, or freak in some way (wich is what happen for male characters), then they will not be waifus

They are all young and beautiful/hot females wich usually ever get easy support and fanbase (wich become Waifu)

A fight game (well, at least a SF game) cast traditionally need a good number of “extreme” designs, being the above mentioned “old, or fat, or over muscular, or freak” or other variety building archetypes

As veteran designers Capcom (and others) know that, so we got the Giefs, Fang, Dhalsim, Birdie etc etc in SFV
Well, everyone aside DoA guys living theyr “we give tits they give money$” dream
But i’m speaking about the ones with still some artistic coherence

This poll just show that if you let Jimmy-the-player chose we will not get a balanced/various SF cast, because he’s not a fucking designer and tbh aside not understanding shit about design, he can’t give a minimal fucks to get a balanced cast

If you don’t see an obvious cast-building giant fault in that top 8, i think there’s no point of debate

Simple as that

I don’t care about change your mind or avoid mangina’s crowd internet dislikes, i’m just happy at least SFV standard cast + 6 end up being great and various

I hope Capcom keep doing theyr thing being affected as less as possible by fans clueless opinion

There are so many SF characters we will have never seen if Capcom in past years repudiated art integrity to straight chase Jimmy’s money

From a variety pov it’s not hard to see

Males design got “cool” good looking chars in Ryu, Ken, Nash, Vega and some others

As character design “Cool Male” it’s kinda the male counterpart of “Sexy Female”

But then you have male designs (tons in SF) that don’t play the “Cool Male” card and bring a fuckton of other archetypes
They bring a waaay wider variety range in terms of look, proportions, age, freakness

Males got Oro and Gen (and many others), oldest female who is? Rose maybe, and aside SF4 shitty model (wich everyone hated) she look like a 25/30yo Bellucci

Males got Gief and Hugo (and many others), most muscly females SFrs are Mika and Laura who got pornstars bodies + some bodybuilding (nothing remotely as extreme)

Males got Dhalsim and Fang (and many others), who is the most freaky female? Juri? Still super hot with most of her freakness is sexy based

Males got Honda and Birdie, fattest playable female is probably Mika lol

Fight games are essentially targeted at 15-30yo males, the marketing pose limits to character design in order to keep females in the fuckable range (jap one)
In other words sex sells.
NONE of the females of SF is made without sell sex, while a lot of male designs don’t have the “cool” factor limitation.
Now, i’m not necessarily against that
In fact i like Capcom aesthetic and i hate see peoples external to SF art style interfere with SF just because they feel theyr social trends are more important.
Take Mika’s censored CA (wich itself is’nt big deal), there Capcom censored a stylistical coherent thing to avoid the internet outrage of ignorant sites, some fat feminist blogger or the sensible soul of a moustached hipster.

Said that, this make males designs end up being more useful for cast-building because they are used as variety tools, when you must build a classic SF/FG cast offering a good variety of design archetypes (specially the extreme ones)

And btw on that list even the 3 males that end up cover the first 3 spots of that list are
1- Cool Japanese Karateka
2- Cool Blond Murican Karateka
3- Cool Demon Karateka

And i like Ryu (one of my fav SF char)
And as said before, even in theyr waifuness i consider Chun, Cammy and Juri great chara-designs

So it’s not even male or female thing, it’s just that peoples preferences and cast building are two different things and i hope it stay that way as much as possible

I’m not sure I agree with your general point, but I do think it would be cool to see a female character who isn’t conventionally beautiful. It’d be great to see a female Gen/Oro old master type, for example; someone like Oume and Otane from Power Instinct (remember that game? I might be exposing my age here). A female character along the lines of Dhalsim, Necro, or Blanka would be cool too – and I don’t mean the cheesecakey sexy Blana design, but something actually bestial or otherworldly.
