@Magegg OK that Mexican flghter with Taco’s and Mariach Guitar example was just…wut? PYSCH0J0SH’s Canadian fighter would have a practical aplication for the log with it giving her a unique mechanic. It isn’t there just to say she’s Canadian. Where as with your Mexican example is just a ridiculous exaggeration because he cleary isn’t making her a lazy and damn near offensive stereotype like that. I.E attacks utilising maple syrup, a hockey stick etc like you mentioned before.
@C.Viper Fan. Popular opinion for better or worst ultimately determines what’s “good” and what isn’t on a grand scale. Not the creator. Capcom may like what they’ve done with C.Viper but a good number of fans are not fans of her. You like C.Viper that’s cool, but alot don’t and it seems to bother you. Like my comment about Viper was just a playful jab, and you got so butthurt lol. PS BB Hood’s a 18 year old character from a relatively obscure series. Viper’s only 7yrs from a very popular and legendary series. Time will tell if Viper is that great of a character.
I was hoping all this fanboy flaming would’ve ended by now. Anyway, I wouldn’t be surprised if Karin is a more likely candidate for 5 than any of the new characters to SF4. She is the original Abel and has a good amount of fans also who were outspokenly disappointed in her exclusion. She has the tools that make for a good fighting game character without being a shoto, without having a dive kick, and without using charge.
But this thread is about new characters. Have people been getting into a discussion regarding rivalries? Like SF4 before you fought Seth, you had the rival battle, but it seems like 50%+ of the character roster’s rivalry was with Ryu. That just seems to defy reason. Like Ryu might be aiming to be the best, but I doubt he’s picking fights with everybody he crosses paths with (unless there’s something really good in his bag). Ok I take that back. I just did research and he’s a rival to 6 other characters. But that’s still excessive.
Anyway, I like to think we can infer some information about new/returning characters just based on Chun-Li and Ryu’s inclusion. If 5 occurs after 3, then it’s likely that Oro will be in since he took on Ryu as a student. But Ryu’s never been known as a benevolent guy looking to undo evil forces, so we can’t presume that any of his rivalries will hold up in 5. Except for maybe Sagat. I mean if there’s no focus attack or ultras/EX with invincibility for days, then zoning will be reasonable again. Kind of like how it showed and failed in SFxT just by the other dominant mechanics in that game. So Sagat would be a supreme threat in a game like 5. Much different than how he had to play with some (a lot of) manners in 4.
Oh yeah we also have Charlie. Guile’s been looking for Charlie FOREVER so even if they were just palette swaps of each other, Guile has to be in.
Another thing that Capcom, like most companies with profitable franchises, can’t do without, are their protagonists. In SF3, after Ryu, in my opinion the game had 2 protagonists: Alex and Necro. Alex was a co-protagonist since New Gen whereas Necro only became a protagonist in 3S (In the other 2 versions he was more like a henchman for the Illuminati) when he escaped their control.
So here’s my top 8 anticipated characters:
Oro
Sagat
Ken
Guile
Karin
Alex
Necro
Urien
There’s no real Chun-Li rival representation since she seemed most committed to fighting Mad Gear and Shadaloo, and if I include just one character from either organization, I’d have to include the rest. I don’t want to see SF5 going that route. Would be cool if Chun-Li got a new rival out of nowhere that wasn’t a thug or assassin to get even with.
-saying in advance that i don’t even like C.Viper-
To be honest “popular opinion” come from average peoples that usually don’t know shit about character design, and sure as fuck not as professional designers.
If anything chara design in FGs is getting worse exactly because internet+marketing teams combo is pushing audience’s shitty tastes over designer’s coherent artistic vision
If “good” mean quality please never call popular opinion in the conversation
If “good” mean what sell, PLEASE call it “marketable”
It really isn’t worth debating anyone whom has sadly graduated from being a fan, to a stan. I still say character usage, and player buzz is more of a determining factor of which character is the most popular, despite how pleased Capcom is. Of all the new characters in the SF4 series, C. Viper is not at the top – she only became popular because of great players like JaycetheAce, Latif, and Wolfkrone. I personally don’t mind C. Viper, and think she’s okay. It also makes sense for her to have been the SF4 representative in UMvC3. However, Rufus, Juri, and now Decapre are way more popular, for better or worse.
BUT anyway, I still vote to have King Cobra make it in SF5.
Wow, I completely forgot about that game and it used to be one of my favorites, too. I probably subconciously was thinking of it when I designed Cooper.
The 3 characters I used as inspiration were Guile, Abel/Dolls and Bulletproof from C.O.P.S. Originally I was going to make him blonde haired with sunglasses but then he looked too much like Captain Commando. Designing new characters is tough. Especially when everything has almost been done already.
If I can get the great C. Viper or Juri I’ll be content. Shit, I really miss playing this game competitively like I did when I first joined this forum back in 09. Viper challenged me the most out of any character I’ve played in a fighting game. Broke my first PS3 controller trying to learn her and never quite got to the level I wanted to be with her because I was getting my bachelor’s and my local scene didn’t want to give me rides anymore despite me always offering gas money.
Just a little fun fact, her double elbows were charge in A3 beta, but of course changed it in the final. I’d say it was for the better. That move would’ve been more useless than how it is now lol.
