Apples to oranges. Changing Ryu is bad not because he is a shoto but because he is the main protagonist. Zangief and Dhalsim? Mere secondary characters with little or no involvement in the main plot. As interchangeable as James Bond’s women.
As a grappler player, I want a character other than because we deserve better than a low damage, big hurtbox, little footsies and slow character that sits at the bottom of tier lists in most games. For those reasons I want Hugo even less. A better grappler designed from a scratch without the baggage and restrictions of existing ones will be easily embraced if playing him doesn’t feel like an uphill battle.
The whole point of bringing a character back is to keep his moveset. It’s not that they are going to take out Sim’s drills and yoga fire / flame because of reinvention purposes: that would just turn off the few existing Sim players that want to perform those moves and the people who would like to try something new might still see same old Sim. Apply the same logic to Zangief. So being realistic they won’t be reinvented just like the characters already in SF5 didn’t and the “evolution” will be mostly aesthetics and minor tweaks to a special or a command normal, not enough for Gief at least to stop being competitively bad.
The whole point of bringing a character back is to develop the character, which entails improving their moveset, which can also mean changing it if necessary (See: Nash, Birdie, Bison). Ask any Bison player for example, and they will likely tell you SFV Bison feels like the most complete and mature version of the character. Sure he lost some of his tools but the overall gain the character got is extremely positive. Nash plays like someone completely new, as he should after all this time but his essence is still Charlie Nash. Gief and Sim, and other SF2 characters can experience a similar revitalization and IMO should.
The problem I see with the likes of Dhalsim is that the character was created in a very specific way that doesn’t really allow much of an improvement, unless you change their gameplay style (like Birdie who is now a much more aggressive character).
At least with gief it’s pretty simple - change up his appearance a bit, give him a few new wrestling moves and several new normals and we’re done
I think Ono said in an interview at E3 that we have another “unexpected” character who wasn’t popular down the line like Birdie. While we don’t know if he means at launch or DLC, the statement does make me wonder who he means?
-SF1 character? (Eagle? Retsu? Geki?)
-Alpha? (Sodom?)
-3S? (Oro? Remy?)
Probably think that because the closest thing we have to that gets shit on ALL THE TIME for not being sexy enough / feminine enough.
As for Rose? She is actually extraordinarily over sexed. Filipinoman actually said the main reason he picked her was because she had big boobs. She is wearing a skin tight outfit underneath a dress while wearing high heels. She is pretty sexualized.
Maybe not as much as SOME but certainly not for nothing.
the more i’ve seen this game the more i realise juri is definitely going to be in it, with her v trigger being the feng shui engine or something very similar. it would fit the system perfectly. might be a bit too strong though with the current damage??
why is this street fighter 5: no proper charge characters allowed edition?
charging isn’t that hard that it should be left out of the game entirely. i can play motion characters just as easily as charge characters, i just prefer charge characters for some reason. maybe its because i feel holding charges during long combos is more rewarding, or maybe it’s because charge characters usually have better normals. i dunno i just prefer them.
true but i just keep seeing this “make insert charge character here a motion character” like charge characters suck and nobody likes using them. tons of people prefer to use charge characters.
He’s a hybrid, so is Alex, and so is Urien. They should remain as such.
More than half of the original 12 characters were charge characters, it’s so fucking Street Fighter I can’t believe people want it out. People who don’t like charge characters should learn to play or move on to the next character. Seriously, this is getting old.
depends how much they change guile too though. that’s what i’m really interested to see. he’ll finally have to be given at least one more move. what do you give him? -
an air charge move (something with a similar motion to decapre’s spiral arrow)
a motion move (his omega moves perhaps)
a command grab (lol)
what on earth would his v trigger be? maybe for v trigger he loses charge and becomes a motion character lol.
I really dunno if they’d be willing to change up Guile significantly. The fact he has always had 2 special moves has become kind of a character defining trait of his. I mean they did it in omega mode so I suppose anything is possible.
