SFIV's issue with characters

I think the Alpha 2 cast is more liked then the ST cast.

People asked for Adon, Guy, and Rolento- I don’t think too many wanted Honda, Blanka, Boxer, and Claw.

if only there was a forum to discuss SFIV…

I’m inclined to agree. No offense but there are a lot of characters in the series that could go from a popularity standpoint. Though from a story standpoint, Dictator would leave too, I still think the series is better with him in the game.

Third Strike would have been epic with Bison somewhere in the lineup imo.

I would hope that SF5 brings in older characters, with more refined movesets and a different outlook for the game. A Sakura~ not in schoolgirl clothing. A more centered, perhaps less military oriented Guile (Blackwater mode Guile ftw). It doesn’t have to be all super and dark, but honestly I think the series is better with characters like Blanka, who Capcom obviously hates gone~ and a stronger focus on bringing characters like Abel, Alex, Juri, etc to the forefront.

Street Fighter 3 was really bold in its application, and I hate to think Capcom would never do something like it again just because it’s ‘unsafe’. Characters like Necro weren’t a failure for me. They were interesting visually and in their playstyle. Had 3S had more SF2 characters, people would have been far more welcoming to the new cast.

Hahaha

In terms of overall popularity, SF3 was a total flop. It caught on with the hardcore SF players, but it alienated the casual players quite a bit. People remember playing SF2 when they were little kids/teenagers. So there is a nostalgic feeling and also the ability to jump in and start playing without a lot of time to learn the new characters. Overall SF3 was not casually friendly.

Part of the problem with SF3 was the death of arcades. SF3 wasn’t in an arcade within 150 miles of me in any direction.

I just got to play it for the first time a few months ago.

As for the cast, I know a lot of people don’t like the Ken/Ryu/Akuma/Sagat characters, that’s fine. I don’t like Fei Long and Guy.

If Capcom decides to make a game without Akuma or Ken, I’m out. I’ve been playing since 91-92, whenever SFII came out, and I play with Ken. The differences between Ken and Ryu are small, but significant enough that I can play two levels of difficulty higher on SFIV with Ken. Same for online. I will hit a stalemate or win with Ken, I lose horribly with Ryu.

Capcom keeps those guys around to keep $$ flowing. I want more opponents myself but I want the core characters more. If they ditch those guys, I’ll just keep playing my old games rather than buy the new one.

It is kind of like making a movie sequel with new cast and characters with a different story line. It is a sequel by name only.
