Fun tourney! My attention was devoted more on KOF XII for a good portion of the time, and in the actual tournament I felt like I was playing like shit in my first couple matches… making stupid mistakes and missing a bunch of combos, but that Time Crisis setup is kinda awkward. I’m glad I was able to get into the groove later.
Good stuff Slade, as I said I hadn’t really played much in the way of Hondas yet so I had no idea how to approach that matchup. Well okay I did have an idea on how to approach it… very carefully. It was a battle of wills… and random bullshit like EX Headstomp 
I still can’t believe Abel’s EX Tornado Throw grabbed EX Headbutt too…
GG’s too Ben, nice Balrog! THAT was a matchup I knew fairly well but it’s still not all that easy for Abel since Balrog low jab stuffs so much shit.

I cautiously like it. Its new so hard to say.
Doesn’t really play like any other KOF you’ve played before. Its still KOF at heart, but the push pull space control game has become very different. Its faster than sf4 (though of course games usually take longer.)
Iori seems pretty good. He has a sol badguy style command grab that you can do juggles off of. His basic combo does good damage has okay normals.
CCs are done when your cc gauge is full and you counter hit with your b+c attack (you’ll know its glowing) you get a special little falsh then you do what you want.

Care is pretty much it… Honda is mostly a boring turtle char, where you really need to commit to not run into free ex-headbutts (dumb early jump ins, poke strings with hits spaced too far apart, hyperaggressive forward motion and/or rushdown that isn’t cloaked in a crossup, safe move, etc). Granted you raped me in the last 2 sets in all aspects, but I most liked the commitment to ex-(punch vertical?) every time on your wakeup, wiping out any chance of crossup, buttsplash, or ochio gimmicks. No gimmicks, ex-headbutts, safe jumping attacks, etc, and I was a bit exposed out there. PS You obv didn’t need to but maybe try out Abel more, he either has counters for or outright beats all of Hondas stuff clean. Much scarier matchup imo. GGs all.

Abel a better counter to Honda? Not so sure I agree with that. Being able to punish Honda’s headbutt with Ultra is nice, but if he doesn’t have Ultra it’s hard to get in. Yeah he’s got roll but a headbutt can hit him out of it as he’s recovering if it’s not EX. The reason I didn’t try Abel any further other than that one match in winner’s final is because I was making a lot of bad guesses on Tornado Grab setups. Seemed like every time I went for one you would jump out of it, then when I was sure you’d jump you’d stay on the ground instead. Just felt like my mixup game wasn’t faring so well so I went with the safer choice of Bison. Also there was that one point where Sumo Splash spam was outright owning me for some reason…
And yes, I tend to blow a lot of meter on EX Devil’s Reverse, but I do like how it’s such a great get-out-of-jail-free card. Getting away from crossup sumo splashes / ochio ticks is definitely worth it!
XII only has 20 characters? Yeah, I know they had to redraw all-new high-res artwork for every one, but that’s still a really small roster for a KOF game.
20 characters deserves a less regal moniker. Something like, “The Dutchess of Fighters” or thereabouts.

Just wanted to say I had fun at the tourney. This is the first fighting game I’ve played seriously, and not so coincidentally the first fighting game tourney I’ve attended. I rushed all my links/juggles, and didn’t play enough to my strengths. I feel pretty good with how I played, but hope to perform better in the future.
Everyone I’ve met in this established Portland fighting game community has been really cool, and enjoyable to play with.
