Good shit tonight Ray, Ross, Mackenzie. Too bad we had to play on that stick for so long, fun anyways. Hope to catch you guys next time you come up!
Thanks man! Nice firekick mixups with Viper, ur Bison was tight too. I was really impressed with your play overall, you were fucking me up with Viper lol.
Wtf is hp super? End my super with a hp instead of a lp or mp?
We are down for a tournament. We just need some volunteer organizers that can show they can do the job of running it. With volunteers, all the entry money can go into the prize pot. We do not want to try to make anything extra on a tournament, only support the player community.
we have a lot of ppl that have experience in running tournaments around here. I know that I would be down for a tourney though.
That is SO amazing to hear! As Frank has said, we have tons of people that know how to run tournaments. And you can definitely sign me up for volunteering for helping out.
One thing, I’m guessing you guys would keep it pay per play if we had a tournament, right?
My only concern is if it’s gonna be pay to play. If it’s pay to play, as it’s not one cabinet, that would mean both players would have to pay each time a match ends, which would be crazy. That means that players that make it far into the tourney would be spending hella money, and any money that they win won’t really be much as they spent so much to get that far. That would mean that the tourney entry itself couldn’t be more than like three bucks at most. If it’s free play then whatever, that would work, but yeah, definitely something to discuss.
My friend and I were talking, and we came to this main idea:
Narrows probably makes $100 a day off of SF4 alone (this would be a general yet generous estimate on a good day). With that, if we throw a tournament that wasn’t pay per play, how would they make money?
If Narrows is going to be letting us throw a tournament, the tournament would last quite awhile as well, depending on the amount of people entering. As most people know here, depending on the amount of people, tournaments with only one machine can last anywhere between 5 to 8 hours, maybe even more in extreme cases. In doing so, they lose their time with the machine, and they lose money going into that machine.
At the same time, a person spending money on gas to get down, tournament entry fee, AND $1 per match can get kinda expensive I suppose. I can say for myself, “Screw it, it’s SF4 tournament, I’m here to represent Seattle, I won’t mind dropping a few dollars to do this event!” However, when you think about the amount of “random players” the mindset is quite different.
The main issue is that pay per play can get kinda heavy. And people might have a problem with that, especially those who aren’t necessarily from the fighting game community. At the same time Narrows needs to be making money too…it’s only fair.
I was thinking that if we DID throw a tournament without the pay per play option, we could make the entry fee some what higher then usual, and then forward narrows some money for using their time, space, and machine…while at the same time, we could split the rest of the pot after paying Narrows.
My general thoughts: The first SF4 tournament would be VERY large. I’ve seen TONS of players in rotations up to 12 people at times. And mind you, that these were people that aren’t of the “fighting game community” we have here on SRK. This tournament can get a LOT of attention. If people just handed out fliers, or even if you had a note on the SF4 cabinet that said “Month/day (date) SF4 TOURNAMENT!” People are gonna be interested. I know you get at least 10 people down there a DAY that would see the flier every time they played. All in all, the first SF4 tourny is going to get a lot of attention, not just from us as SRK members.
Mickey D, I like your post. Some good points are made here. It would have been pay for play, but I now see the issues with that. So, charge a few more bucks for entry for the machine fund, I guess.
I havent read everything just caught the tail end. But why doesnt the owner just reduce it to 1 dollar for 2 credits. That way its pretty much 50cents to play on tourney day. That isnt so bad. It def should not be free, cause ya arcade owners are crying to much about the cost of the stupid game. 50cents just for tourney day is pretty reasonable though. He seems like a pretty understanding guy…try that out. If not, then suck it up and pay 1 dolla =D I dont mind either way.

I think if the tourney had like 6 dollar entry with 3 dollars going to machine and 3 to the pot that would be acceptable? only thing is how much would it be set on? Freeplay is probably too much, but what about 50 from each player per game? that would seem fair…
See the point of the matter is that even if the cost was dropped down to 50 cents…I still find it ridiculous that winner of first round would have to pay AGAIN to win his match. At the same time, Narrows would be getting merely HALF of what they would be getting normally had they NOT thrown the tournament. It’s not profitable for them.
Bill, if you don’t mind me asking, could we get an estimate of how much you would like to see if we were to do a tournament? How much money would you prefer to be fronted?
The way I look at it, if we can put an entry fee at about $10 or so we should be fine. This will attract people in the sense of “Wow, tournament is only $10? Thats about how much I spend every time I come here already!” At this rate, a person that would lose instantly (meaning going 2 and out (3 matches worth)) would only be losing $7 which in my opinion, not too much of a loss. At the same time, players who make it further into the tournament will get their “money’s worth” as far as amount of play they got, and as far as money/cost that they would have normally put into the machine.
Now with the entry fee being set so high at $10, we could split the pot up. Narrows would get their money from us, and we could spread the pot after paying Narrows. Depending on how many people show up (which I would guess quite a bit), we really shouldn’t have too much of a problem making both the players and Narrows equally happy.
The 10.00 idea sounds good, but at minimum, 6.00 of that should go to the prize pot in my opinion. So what if we gross a bit less that day. Our location customer (Narrows) would at least be getting some commision from us. But making this a big revenue day for us is not the objective. Promoting the game is, and showing everyone a good time. So yes, 10.00 entry, with 4.00 going to the machine pot with machines on free play that day would probably be the ticket.
It’s rare in this day and age to find a businessman that will put satisfying the customers in front of making money.
Someone needs to rep this man.
EDIT: I didn’t know he had hella rep already lol
Ohhhhh man. That is excellent. I will come and I’ll drag anyone in portland I can with me. Freeplayyyyyy sweet.
He deserves a case of beer.
Make it Icehouse please.
Bill…I just want to say that this is amazing to hear, and that I appreciate that so much. To be honest, I am actually having a hard time finding the words to explain my feelings towards this statement…all in all, I have much respect for you for being so generous and understanding to the fighting game community.
Thank you so much.
Now, since that is figured out, when should we have it? What kind of rules do we implement? I would presume it would be double elimination, as that’s how most tourney’s are run as is. Can someone make a flier for this when everything’s set out? I would make it, but i don’t have a printer. It’d be real cool to have a flier posted on the cabinet itself so that people who regularly play on the machine that ARE interested in the game, get the chance to know that there’s a tourny happening.
Thx for the kind words. Now convince my old lady of all that, haha. Anyhow, mid November might be a good target date. And double elim also sounds good. That is how the tournament organizer volunteers that did dozens of DDR tournaments with us set them up. I miss those DDR tournament days. We used to get hundereds of people to those back in the early days around 2001-2002. I remember connecting extra amplifiers to the DDR with some big ass speakers and rockin the house.
Anyhow, I am rambling off topic now so time for me to STFU.
I hope you dont think im kidding!
